I agree with Fozzy. Some people have mentioned that the site seems to have been taken over by Noobs. I think what's changed is that we RARELY (except for Jon Foster and Android) anything posted by some of the 'founders'... not even so much as a speed painting.
MGH
June 25th, 2003, 03:27 PM
Sorry, just thought of something else.
I think if some of those afore mentioned guys participated more in some of the speed painting stuff it would really give this site some needed energy.

Well, the fact that Fozzy mentioned me in there with some of those other names has me baffled in and of itself! I am not worrrrrthy! :D
However, the thought is much appreciated and I'll just say that the past several weeks/months have been busy and stressful for me. (As a matter of fact, I wouldn't even have seen this post had it not been for my brother, MindCandyMan, telling me about it.) Unfortunately, it's not due to pumping out more artwork but just with life in general and trying to maintain. I'm sure at least some of you are aware of the responsibilities of raising and caring for a family, there's a special woman and 3 kids that depend solely on me. And if you don't know about it personally...take my word for it!
Nevertheless, the comments are appreciated and have acted as inspiration for me. Fozzy, MGH, and Iwasink...thanks for your posts. I plan on contributing more in the future. I fell dumb in some ways putting this post up, but I also feel the need to explain myself a bit and to convey that this forum means quite a bit to me. Thanks for your comments, I shall return soon!!!!!

Fozzybar, most all of the people you mentioned have jobs.
why did you mention Foster? He is hella active around here. It shocks me some of his stature(sp?) communicates with us so much.
Jason will hopefully be around more in the future weeks to come. He's under NDA(like always) so he can't post much of his current work.
Until then keep drawing so when he is around he can be impressed with your improvements.

stikler999 - piss off,
I have a solution to your dilema, why dont i just ban you and you wont have to worry about it anymore?
obviously this site is not ment for you. You act like we owe you something. what have you done for me lately, besides piss me off today?
I appreciate peoples feedback on what they like and dont like about this site. but please stop with the whining. it really underminds the effort that has gone into establishing this site over the past YEAR.
Jason and I do our best with the time we have to make this site better, but we are two guys who work over 70 hours a week on stuff we cant show anyone.
btw
The ever elusive Jason Manely is busy hanging out with me this weekend in Austin. we are both taking a little time off to enjoy some rock and roll and fast Livin I will see if i can get him to post some new stuff.
for all the hardcore CAorgians, your loyalty will be rewarded with the new update that is under development.

i know what has been said, if stikler posted some quality art his opinion would have more weight, i dont appreciate the hypocricay of a noob complaining that they have to search through too many noob posts to find good art.
It is a very shortsighted philosophy. i know that alot of the noobs that contribute work will someday be the nest generation of great concept artists. hell, killer napkins might own all of us one day if he keeps at it . for me its worth browsing a hundred bad posts to find one diamond in the rough like a dowwoda, or the german powerhouse Marko. and I value a mindcandy-man and an oblio just as much as i do a professional because of thier attitude ambition and dedication.
people seem to want all these talented artists just handed to them on a silver platter. this is not a silver platter, this is an online comunity of thousands of artists. real tallent is supposed to be hard to find, thats what makes the search worth it.

chill dood. don't make this get any worse than it already is. This was already somewhat resolved when andrew replied after my post, but sure it doesnt help that a bunch of brown-nosers came around to blindly follow what andrew said. Everyone is entitled their own mantras and ideology when it comes to their work, but there needs to be a line that is drawn. What andrew did was more of a personal attack, and not constructive in any way, however he is part of this forum's establishment and it's best not to pick fights with those holding the reigns. for god's sake, i would be banned if i posted in threads of lesser artist than I with differing viewpoints telling them to PISS OFF or worse.

smeagol - i mentioned you because it was a pleasure for me to look at your art...and you were very active at that time i was referring to...
davi - hey, i know that they have jobs...but they have had them also as they posted more...i don't want to tell anyone to post more and forget about their duties, because i have them myself and have barely time to do something that i could post. I was just trying to mention some of the great artists, which once were more active here, because i (we) appreciate their art they presented us...since the threads subject was "more jason manley!"...about foster, maybe i didn't look in the threads he posted (i don't look often in the portrait/life drawing sections)...

Yeah. I'd like to be the only noob to post in a completely professional forum too. Where they all would spend hours to just crit me.
Wake up man, that exists! It's called private art classes. It just costs tons of money. If you pay more they'll all say nice stuff only too!
This is as was said a community. And the things said about noobs (like myself) taking over is not something that can be stopped. We can all try to find a way to keep the flavour and 'culture' of the forum though.
I try to post only what i think is worthy (at least i try not to waste peoples time too much) and my own self-censure level has gone way up.
That's something more people could do. But we all need to post and if you're happy and confident with a piece why not post it?
Just keep the crit culture and the flavour will stay here and grow. Anybody replying should always say a positive and a negative thing in my opinion. Or not so much negative as suggest something that can change. At least in all but the finished forum. That kind of stuff. We have to get a culture established as a group (pros and noobs alike) and it will enforce itself.
There will always be more noobs. That;s a good and a bad thing.

amphex - you can call me, Mister President, sir; or daddy. whatever on you prefer
of course this is a privilege, but there also need to be rules. this is not really about wheteher i am for or against noobs, or any of that, but instead it it regarding what i feel is Android's inappropriate reaction to a criticism of the forum. I dare say that if i were to tell you to "piss off," then i would surely be banned for making a personal attack against you, however if perhaps i were some one with work you recognized or perhaps all loved then people would folk around me and agree with my wrongdoing.
so what do you think? Using precident set here, does that mean i can post grumpy replies in artists' threads who are of a lower skill level than me and i disagree with?
tell me that.
Oh yeah, WOOOO JASON MANLEY RAWKS... haha

word! this and andrews posts, (and ty's pic ;)) sums the thing up pretty much there.
re more noobs: this is called the aging of forums. this happens everywhere. sijun had it, eatpoo had it, now ca has it. some forum communities manage to cope with it and still stay great, some take damage and don't cope well with it. nothing against that... and this is not even a mere excuse for a forum becoming bad or boring.
if the time you spend at a forum is not good, it is more likely the "air" there than the mixture of professionals and amateurs.
as erik said, it's about the crit culture (among different things). this was the most normal thing in the earlier days and it diminished kind of, lately.
but the only people able to change that are the visitors, pros and noobs alike, not jason posting work (although i would appreciate more jason goodness :))
what we should keep from the "old days" is the professional attitude.
this was what made this forum stick out for me: there were people of all skill levels behaving well, giving crits, opinions and all that.
what if everyone here tried to find one thread per visit here and give good help or critics in a way you would love to receive them?

FOSTER...thank you my friend...this thread made my whole day. I will post art as soon as I am able. I have been productive as of late and have been pushing..soon I hope.
as far as the rest of the mumbo jumbo......
1 noobs need lovin....dont just come and take from the pros...come and give to those who can use your help. Its not what CA can do for you...its what YOU can do for CA. Andrew and I shell out all the hosting fees out of our own pocket..we organize the site the best we can...we post as much work as we can....but if you ask me its people like fozzy or Erik or mindcandyman or davi or the hundreds of others who really make this site. this site is NON PROFIT..we are all giving as much as we can. I want nothing more than for this site to be the best art forums on the web. I can not do it alone..andrew cant do it alone...and neither can anyone else. it is the community that makes the community..not one or two of the pros or even ten of them. If there is not enough giving then perhaps its best to GIVE MORE.
2 be humble about your work. All of us have things to work on..even those who are trying to get better and are no where near where we need to be. coming here and griping about the noobs is beginning to irritate me as well. I was a noob too and so were all of you. If I went into the art field knowing Id be up against such snobbery I probably wouldnt have made it. help those in need...even those who seem like they are going nowhere. I was the WORST in my class when i started drawing in community college. I didnt know it....help them like you get help from others...help like you expect to be helped.
3 stickler...i disagree with you on many points....the last thunderdome was a success in my mind. It taught a lot of people how they can be creative while working with anothers design. the turnout was strong...the redesigns were often excellent. I dont understand how you can gripe about it when you didnt even submit a piece from what I remember. I think your frusterations with your place in your art knowledge is rubbing off on your peers some. Have you been doing life drawing every day like we told you to way back when? Where are all your portfolio pieces you need? all the info you need to get started can be found somewhere on this site. How come Im not seeing it every day? Andrew draws every single day...so do I...so does foster...etc...do you? i understand how you feel my friend...i do...i was 20 years old with no future and no money when i started out...getting my skills hurt and pained and pissed me off tremendously. I hear your points...many which seem valid to me...if they were written more tactfully andrew probably would not have reacted the way he did.
4 the site is growing...and changing...and evolving...one of the positive ways that this is good is more people will see your work. There is a nice group of people who were discovered on this site...who showed their work and now have careers. the growth of this site is a good thing. it gives all of you more exposure for your work. this is a great place to showcase your stuff. if you have a specific question any of you can always use the PM function or email the person who you think is the answer. Art is not served up on a platter any longer...you must dig...research...practice...and love every minute of it if you can.
Im rambling....the site will grow and progress and it is not in any sort of downward spiral....a roller coaster at times...but never into the dirt. if you want it to be better...please...make it better.
huge thanks to everyone who contributes.

Hey Jason in my opionion this is the best art forum out there!
Some of us try to give back, I remember starting a tread to try and get a CA flyer going so that we can spread the word. I wanted to post it at my school, I don't have the talent yet to do something like this so I didn't give it a try. Maybe if I would of just tried even if it was crap someone could of came along and tried with me.
I myself am thankful for CA because I have learned so much and continue to learn and for that I thank every single person who participates.

Oh cīmon guys, cool down.
Andrew being rude is not the end of the world or the end of CA. No, it shows pretty much that we are normal people, having bad days, moods, situations in life, where somebody just pisses us off, and we need to tell it aloud. Man, it tells ya' nothing more than, that we artist are just as failable as any noob, and this was makes us human and this is what breathes life into such a forum. Though Iīm a noob myself but have watched this forum from afar for a long while, it was for the lifebreathing comments of any artist (noob to professional) that I was drawn to this place.
Man, nothing ends, CA is living in itīs summer and itīs good the way it is. Donīt make things more dramatic than they are.

he came in here and complained that the pros were not doing enough work on the site to contribute and that the place was over run with noobs...that basically the quality of the site has fallen off and that we are in a downward spiral...it was a long and rather frusterating rant. He also said the last thunderdome was weak (even though he did not even enter it) among other things. I think the point that got andrew fired up was when he said he would rather go to sijun than come here because of all these "disappointments".
