FOOD! Venue and Nearby Restaurants
Don't know about you guys, but when I'm out of town - on vacation etc. I like to eat and especially like to eat things I can't get in my plain vanilla homestate of Utah.
Question One however;
What sort of foodstuffs if any will be available in or around the venue? I'm not planning on leaving for too long, but I need food more than I need sleep. Maybe we can get a hotdog or taco peddler to park outside :D
Question Two; for the locals -
What restaurants are good around there? Nothing pricy, remember most/many of us are artists who eat ramen most of the time. Nearby would be nice too. Ethnic stuffs would be sweet. Did I mention I live in Utah?
--Can you tell I'm hyper and pumped?

For fairly cheap Chinese Noodles you might want to check out Sam Wo in Chinatown. Here's a link:

I think theres a homeless shelter with free food nearby. I think if we just tell them we're artist's they might feel bad and let us in.
The tenderloin. haha, that should be interesting.

So here's a list of my own discoveries from years of living in or around SF. Not gonna cover the bars, pubs and clubs.... since I know way too many. :P And for the record, I'm avoiding most of the really touristy areas. You can easily find that stuff on yer own!
www.burritoeater.com (http://www.burritoeater.com) if you're a burrito kinda person. Lots of great Mission district places.
Tartine (http://www.tartinebakery.com/) is the best damn bakery I've ever been to. Be warned, the line is always long but it's worth it. (And almost every girl that works there should be painted).
Naan and Curry (http://www.fudcourt.com/naan.html) in the Tenderknob... er loin - Great Indian food... at least as far as my American taste buds can tell. Very popular eatery.
Peter D's (http://www.yelp.com/biz/41OVDdg2fu94A35utLTHxQ) - The best.... and I mean the best french toast in the bay area.... as long as you like cream cheese. Don't ask me how he does it. It just works. And the place has this look like it's right out of the seventies.... because it probably is. It's been open forever, the waitresses have been there forever (and I will call them waitresses and not servers, because they're the type who would be offended if I tried to use the politically correct term).... it's just a great hole in the wall (it sits below a motel), and they just have no need to update their decor (it's not retro, it's authentic).
Zachary's Pizza (http://http://www.zacharys.com/) - I wouldn't ask you guys to run out to the East Bay if it wasn't worth it, and Zachary's is worth it. Even native Chicago folk agree that this is the best pizza they've ever had. It's so good, they have oversized original artwork (none that great, but hey!) covering the entire wallspace - each of them paying homage to Zachary's.
St. Francis Fountain and Candy (http://www.google.com/maps?hl=en&lr=&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official_s&q=francis+restaurant&near=San+Francisco,+CA&radius=0.0&latlng=37775000,-122418333,3264477696983798992&sa=X&oi=local&ct=result&cd=1) - If you guys want to see what the local urban scene looks like on a hangover morning, this is your place. They have a display case with Topps trading cards of the A-Team and a bunch of other 80's memorabilia, as well as an old fashioned soda jerk. Great milkshakes, excellent corned beef and hash, cool staff.
Sapporo-ya (http://www.yelp.com/biz/tBN6TYfOQEFmb7duMROJnA) - I describe Japantown as my happy place in another post, and this place is about 50% of the reason why (the book and stationery stores are the other 50%). I highly recommend the cold ramen, though it may be rainy and a hot bowl may be more appropriate.
I'm a big big fan of this Vietnamese deli sandwich place in Little Saigon (the Tenderloin basically). The two deli clerk ladies remember every single order down to every detail, and never write a single thing down. A tiny hole in the wall. I believe it's on Larkin, but unfortunately that's all I know. Maybe someone else can chime in.
Burgermeister (http://www.burgermeistersf.com/) - I've yet to find the absolute perfect burger but this place is pretty close. I don't know if they're just a city chain or if they have franchises outside of SF, but it still has that local joint feel to it. They use hormone free Niman Ranch beef, and it's always fresh, juicy, and .....sorry, drooling a bit. Medium rare is the way to go here. My only beef with the place (pun intended) is that the fries that come with the burger is too small in portion. I usually have to order another bag of fries. There's a hotdog joint on Haight that serves burgers once a week, but I've yet to stand in the hour long line to try it out.
But going back to fries, if you want a GOOOOOD serving of fries, go to Fritz (http://www.frjtzfries.com/). It's nestled in the slightly too gentrified/yuppified Hayes Valley. The place itself has a bit of a bohemian look to it (they have a private box room where you sit native american style on a cushion).... but they've also got a great backyard-ish patio seating surrounded by tall townhouses. Belgian style fries.... mmmmm.
I'm sorely tempted to move on to a coffee house list, and I can't remember the address or name to my favorite pancake house (on Market St. near Hayes and Upper Market). Seeing as how we're going to be pulling all niters, I should probably get to those items asap! Need to get my stuff ready for the workshop though. Happy eating, and happy painting!

im probably late to asking this, are there any vegeterian spots?

Hey Davi - There's actually a vegan cafe called Cafe Gratitude (http://www.withthecurrent.com/cafe.html). To be honest, the one in Berkeley freaked me out a bit because they're a little too hippied out (the food items are named after various positive emotional statements such as "I am elated." or "I am grateful", when all I keep thinking to myself is "I am famished"), but I heard the ones in the City are actually a little more laid back. As for vegetarian, the City's got plenty of places with vegetarian items and options.

PPQ dungeness island (www.ppqdungeness.com). pretty good but also pricey since its crab. nann curry is supposed to be good but ive never been there. also house of nan king in chinatown gets good reviews and is frequented by famous cooks but its not exactly authentic chinese food altohugh it is good.

Here's another way to find places to eat... yelp.com (http://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=&find_loc=San+Francisco%2C+CA+94101&x=35&y=15&cflt=food#mapCenterLat:37.780924920900276/mapCenterLng:-122.39743709564209/mapZoom:16)
Looks like there's a whole foods nearby, which is pricey but nice for picking up portable foods.

When I used to work in the financial district and a few of us would crave a sit-down at this place, I'd get excited and say in a very Wizard of Oz jolly kinda voice,"We're off to see the Nan King!"
We'd go and there he'd be, rugby shirt with the color flipped up, and instead of placing in an order, he'd say,"Leave it to me." and we'd get a better combination and variety of food than we could have imagined..... man, that place is one of the things I miss about not working in the City anymore.
Brandy Ho's is a great choice too and it's just down the street. Best combination of price/quality I've had. And further up the street and around the corner is a great Pho house, but I can't remember the name or address. :/
