View Full Version : UK vs. Scandinavia Thunderdome!! rarrgg! (really, REALLY big DL)
Badger
December 11th, 2006, 09:11 AM
Hello blood thirsty thunderdome watchers, As Dirty_C is leaving our lovely little island, we thought we'd send him out with a bang.
The combatants as usual had to choose a dancing partner and then amongst their pairing choose which theme. The options were:
-Journey
-Invasion and repulsion
Judges: (so far)
Daryl Mandryk
Howard Lyon
Mike C
I don't think you want to read much more so heres the art:
Names will be posted at the head of each round. But the name could correspond to A OR B, i tried to shuffle which side was A to allow more neutral judging. I hope thats fairly clearly described.

Posh, I'm pretty sure being that good constitutes cheating. You wins! Well, it was a good exercise at least - got to smear some charcoal and everythin'.
Overall though, there's no question in my mind who owned the seas today - Duddlebug, I take my anachronistic horned helmet off for you, sir. Well solved.

Nordstrand, don't write your obituary so soon. I think your tussle with Aly will be a closer run thing than you might think.
Dallas: Rasmus mate, I think you've pounded my Limey ass into the dust fairly comprehensively there my boy. <sniffs>

EDIT: DC, Dixon and Eriboss _\m/. Kickass work lads.
EDIT II: m@, once we've collected our dead, and patched up the wounded, you can rally the Frenchies for the next fight! :)

Simon, your entry has a sweet mild smile in it. overall it gives me some kind of soft feeling,a good illustration for children book, who would've thought, eh? You would be kicking and screaming year ago if I said this to you.
I feel a soft caring loving feeling to those two characters from you, dolphin and its obnoxious friend. Softness comes form the gentle lighting from the beneath mostly and the soft careful painting. I love it... Lets attack children book publishing :)! greenish title is a bit too much though, in my opinion.
Eriboss... cool graphics and funny to watch how he waited till he dies... The lines work and speed of the drawings and silhouettes are great! The great part of the fun is these figures, gorgeous comic style." Death hurts" page is my favorite. such a freedom in expressing yourself.

WhoaaoA. AaaARgh. Too Much visual information. And a great turn out..?
This was also the first time in three TD's that my opponent turned up... Cheers al-x! And a clever interpretation... cool idea and nice graphics. I'm afraid i went all a bit obvious and topical with the vikings'n'all. I couldn't resist poking fun at you marauding folk with your horned helmets, hairy faces and culinary enthusiasm. :P
i wouldn't want to split Matt and Hurricane or Res and Failoniir or Posh'n'Nordstrand or a few others actually...
The ones that tickled my fancy the most were cakeypigdog (just loved the faces and in particular the fella who looks like he should be captain of a space city with his swanky jacket and his grey streaks), lunch (though i'd love to see vikings against riot police rather than these two unsuspecting bobbies... in real life), fooxoo (just like it, that's all) and dallas (great idea and nicely visualised)
Come on UK!!!! :needle:

Round 29, I like both entries. the first one for the wide outlook and spacious feeling. widens my lungs really.
The second one is funny, the body languages of the escapers (From Tate Britain Museum?) is pure gold. That's some sardonic humor. come on, English were not that far in civilizations from vikings, you are being unfair :).
Round 8 entry B I like this simple but funny and elegant composition. Repulsion, right? Funny. I like tea and tea drinkers though ;). ahahahanana.
Round 9 I like both entries, first one for curvy stylized silhouettes of creature and its rider and huge descending tree branches, it has a fairy tale touch to it. I wish the city was not that geometrical. kind of sobers me up.
And the second one is spacious again and I like these eraser's effect. The landscape looks wet though. good mood.
Round 14 first entry. Looks like mix of traditional and digital, right? looks likea pastel too, I love this effect in digitals.
It is strange image. They all look like lunatics, such an alerting, suspicious family or random collection of people on a bus stop. They look regular, but in the same time strange and something bothers me in their appearance. I wouldn't be very surprise if they slip their surface cocoons and reveal their real essence in the next moment, I kind of expect this. They look like mimickers to humans.

Spud, that's the absolute shit. Great to see you evolving, man. i think that the stylish way you always painted really goes well with some kinda neon art nouveau shit you've got giong there. Seriously love it. Dallas - oooh you two were a good match. Such beautiful colour choices from both of you. Hard to pick (but I'm backing my man Amachree :D )
Eri, Fellah - both totally cool. I kinda think you lent a bit into the wind there, Simon - meaning your subject matter looks like it could have been chosen by your opponent! Really nice.
Is Olsen or Koshime the one with the two guys? Awesome. The other has some great craft designs, too. I get the feling this was Koshime's rushed piece. Looks great in general, mate, just coulda used a little while to fine tune some of that airbrushing.
Posh - the bloke from Cisco in my office reckons you've got the perspective on that '4' in '1/4' wrong. I think it's the most anal thing I've ever heard about one of the tightest paintings I've ever seen, but there you go mate :D
Matt, Bjorn - both kickass. You're pretty happy it's Christmas, huh Hurri? :D
Dudds - did you have a month to kill, or what?? Amazing effort, sir!
ALl I've got time for, gotta head off home in a minute to do some preliminary packing!

Round four, both entries are very strong.
The Pete's has lovely effect of halo from light, and composition is beautiful. Intrusion and Repulsion it is. There is motion into center of piece and waves going from center, smoothing and reducing and impact killing effect.
I know you, Pete, will say something about my selling patch (which I resent btw) but your piece makes me think about opposites, passive and aggressive, warm and cold, light and dark, Yin and Yang, you can start laughing, one hour of laughing is equal to one glass of sour cream... Laughing is good for you...
Very energetic piece..
Dallas. It's a very mysterious mood in you picture. The silhouettes of the belle femme and grand piano against the light glowing sky do this for me. And globe and feckless floor and luxurious paintings in heavy frames...
Interesting atmosphere of refinements and culture and silence and good taste and manners and then this figure of intruder, awkward, misfit, unappropriated.
Blue saturated color of sky looks a bit too digital. I wish it was some finer shade of blue. moodier...

December 11th, 2006, 02:54 PM
Koshime, you asked for tips... well for what it'is worth. I think the composition is a bit too calm and static...the strange submarine or creature doesn't look like it surrounded, there is no feeling of catastrophe or panic, the surface of the water is too clam, in my opinion. Too much of softness in the picture, it is hard to focus eyes on anything, not enough sharp edges and there is no direction from you to viewer where to follow with our eyes. A bit chaotic I think. I would prefer to see more clear Fg and middle ground and BG and more deepness in the image. the closest to us attacking aircraft, I wold prefer it bigger or sharper. The main thing is static. not enough of dynamics, in my opinion.

Wehheheell, such variety, very inspiring. Many good images and some superb ones.
personal Favourites are Duddlebug's, greathumour,a really full and rich image.
Nordstrand, T - really powerful, love the energy. reminds me of some of Egon Schiele's work
And summerpudding really stood out, never seen anything quite like it, refreshing.
Cheers for dueling lunch, haha great gestures, especially on the police!
Quality painting though, solid and well developed.
And a big cheers to everyone else, especially Badger for organising it.

Hi Guys.
@Pud´: Hehe, hard to resist the spacecraft launch eh?! ;) I really like your colours (notice I used weird Pudding colours in mine?). I would have liked to see more of the world though :( Don't assume who's winning just yet...you never know how it goes......;)
Cool stuff guys. Hurri: I really like the giant in the background. Uh, and Ford Capri rules ;)

Not saying he got his inspiration there or anything,
just a funny coincidence.

Very nice work everyone. It was an honor to be able to judge. Lots of great images in there. I am impressed with the number of pieces this round brought out. It isn't always easy to put the time in when you have work and contracts going on, but a lot of you pulled it together. Well done. There are some new standouts from members who I wasn't familiar with. I look foward to seeing more!
