X-Com - The Chryssalid - ORTHO
Here we are at CHOW #52 - ready to shock again:
We have the pleasure of havig a legendary designer as our guest:
Julian Gollop is the creator of the X-Com series and he has a topic for us today.
Here he goes:
__________________________________________
Hi Andrei,
So the character I have chosen is a re-imagining of the most feared
alien from X-Com - The Chryssalid.
Description:
The Chryssalids one of the main alien terror species in the PC game
'X-COM: UFO Defense'. They are roughly humanoid in size, with an
insect-like exoskeleton and menacing claws. They strike fear into X-Com
soldiers in a major way. The reason? They turn civilians into zombies by
injecting a parasitical Chyssalid spore. Since the Chryssalids attack in
densely populated civilian zones, the task of the X-Com commander
becomes perilous. Every civilian is a potential zombie recruit, but it
is much worse than that. A new Chryssalid will emerge from a zombie in a
frighteningly short space of time. It is entirely possible for an X-Com
commander to find his squad transformed into a horde of Chryssalids,
with no hope of salvation.
The task is to re-imagine the Chryssalid. How can it's parasitical
nature be portrayed? Perhaps it has some human genetic material combined
with its own? There could be a hint of some human features mixed with
something horribly alien. For added effect, the creature can be
portrayed shedding its human-zombie host.

This sounds like fun. I like insect bipeds.
I may be dating myself with this admission, but I have not played the game. Is there any chance we can get a good link to the old version of the Chryssalid. I've googled it, but I'm coming up with very small images and what appears to be fan art in some cases...

The most feared alien race in the known galaxy, the Chryssalid, has stalked the black void of space for countless millennia. Watch your six, and don't drop the soap! Because in space... no one can hear you get sodomized by a hulking alien crab man.

hey guys maybe being dense here but whats a ortho? lol
An orthographic view is when you are looking at a object from 90 degrees, or straight at it. This means that you can only see 1 side of the object. You see either the top, left side, right side, bottom, front, or back. Several views are used to define a 3D object.

hey cognition,
Looking at the ortho and just wanted to throw in my two cents. I myself am a character modeler (not professional yet) about to graduate in the next year, so just a few things about your ortho. Its looking good painting wise and what not. It's not good to make a concept blocky, like it is in game to hand to a modeler. I know it sounds like it would be easier on them (it seems logical) but it's not. It hinders the model substantially. The modeler is going to try to match the silhouette of the character as best as he can with a given poly count. So if he is handed something that is blocky it's actually going to look worse when it is finished, because it will seem blocky and inorganic. You want a more geometric character to be the end result of a model, not the end result of the concept art. Because the more a modeler has to make "changes" to the original concept, the longer it is going to take as opposed to having a bangin piece of concept art where he has to subtract things from the model to get it to work through texture or normal maps instead of trying to add things to give it stronger details and more form. I hope that makes sense. Because if i was to model straight off of this. It would look boxy, and people would look at it and thingk something is wrong. I know models are geometric but a pentegon is a round shape, a square box is not. I do think its awesome you tried to think of the modelers for this piece though. A lot of people don't and that can also lead to problems. So its awesome you did that! keep up the good work! Oh and the texture on this would be dank cause you showed it off so well in the ortho. Nice.....(insert southpark voice here)

For my redesign, i decided to focus on the humanoid aspects of the chryssalid. When i googled the chryssalid and other x-com creatures, I also saw some autopsy pics. I wanted to integrate that into my image somehow and ended up with the cross section of the chryssalid's chest.

Hey dude, thanks for the feedback.
heh, I was actually wanting a blocky alien, and not so much for ease of modelling (although I did try and keep the number of spikes down this time ;)). I was going for a stylised look instead of something completely flexible and curvy. I just wanted something different than the super-agile monster look, and ended up with this oaf.
So I suppose this can translate to the crit "I don't like the blocky look"? heh

Hhaha hey Cognition. I think it looks good man. It sounded in your post like you did it that way not completely like you wanted too cause i saw the words "in-game" after a description of the body lol. I guess there was confusion on my part. As a modeler I like the concepts to be as awesome as the concept artist wants them to be. I wouldn't dumb down a concept to model and I would not wanna see someone else do the same thing you know? so glad we cleared that up. Lets see that illustration!

I'm helping my brother move this weekend so there is zero chance this will get finished in time. But since no one is going quite this direction I figured I would post this quick WIP from my sketchbook. Its got a little color and value tweak in photoshop to help it read.
http://subtlesquid.com/imagesforelsewhere/chryssalid.jpg
Its only goal in life is to impregnate every living thing it lays eyes on so I only gave it what it needs for that goal. Has eyes to see its victims, legs to chase them, a big c*** to rape them, and the rest of it's structure is a big sack of spores so it can do it over and over. To fit the description I should probably make the legs exoskeletal. It slowly consumes the corpse of its host for energy. Thats why it doesn't have a mouth but it does wear a torso as a hat.

hey all, thought I'd give this chow a shot, havent been active here for a long while
Here's a wip... the character isn't upright cuz its still hatching out of its host
Seen that its a chrysalid, I thought it'd sort of make sense to add some torn remnants of wings. And maybe give it a feline attitude, why the heck not  And I just realized I'm not to keen on drawing crab-like clawed arms/legs :nohope: .

My entry for CHOW #53.
My aim for this design was to exhibit the parasitic nature of the creature and its origins from a human/zombie host.
Pincers and exoskeleton features from the original led me to think about the hermit crab. Drawing from that inspiration, I reasoned that the creature need not completely shed its human host, rather, it would be exceedingly horrifying for it to use the corpse of its former host as its "shell", from which several alien appendages would protrude.
The creature walks on four limbs. Two bone/exoskeletal claws on the right side, in the place of the left arm of the human host. The remaining two are the puppeted remains of the host's legs. Host's right forearm and hand have been replaced by an alien pincer. Tentacles protrude from the left side of the creature (where it used to be the groin area of the host) and act as "arms" to grapple things with. Three large tentacles protrude from the front of the creature (right side of abdomen for host) act as sensory devices, and can be perceived as a head for the creature. The creature impregnates opponents by first holding them firm with the pincer, then stabbing one of the three sensory tentacles into the victim, subsequently releasing spores into the body.

Aaaahhhhhh!!!!! I'm SO excited and SO frustrated at the same time! I'm excited because after all these years the original X-Com is probably still my favorite game of all-time (I still have the strategy guide sitting on my bookshelf) - and redesigning something for it is the coolest idea ever. And I'm frustrated because I've been so busy with Christmas prep that I didn't see this until now! So today is almost over, and tomorrow is Christmas Eve... so that leaves me almost no time to work on it. Oh well, I'm going give

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e178/natedogler/Chryssalid-Ortho-3.jpg
The parasitic Chryssalid takes on the physical traits of its host during the larva stage. Because its DNA is alien to all known life forms it is very rare to not develop some form of genetic mutation. The reproductive system is very unique in the Chryssalid in that it is hermaphroditic, although it does need a host to reproduce. This happens in a two-part process: first it inserts its "female part" (the visible part is a stocky hollow tongue like muscle that protrudes from the neck just above the collarbone. At its base it connects to the stomach where busy ovaries produce dozens of eggs at a time. When needed the eggs are accessed by being pushed through a series of muscles in the rib cage and through the "tongue.") into the oral orifice of its prospective host and lays an egg in the chest cavity. Secondly the Chryssalid's "male part" (a long prehensile tube the bares a sharp needle like tip) extends from "the scrotum." It then probes the hosts body searching for and orifice, or soft spot. Once a suitable area is found for penetration the "male part" delicately weaves through the hosts internal organs until it gets near the egg. It then releases a sperm like substance, which both inseminates the egg and causes a chemical reaction in the host to take on zombie like characteristics.
...and that's where baby Chryssalids come from :)

For the orthos, I was wondering what would work best for the requirements. Are all ortho. views needed (ie. front, side, back), or just one? Would it be more helpful to have a clean outline, or a colored drawing?

I had fun with this one - definitely a kick to work on a redesign for X-Com. I hope it's sized right and everything, I had to format it on my laptop between family gatherings so who knows how all the levels will look on a good monitor. Well, everyone is waiting for me so they can open presents. Happy holidays to all, and to all a good night!
(If anyone needs a larger size of the ortho let me know, it got sized down considerably to fit)

...I can't believe it. I lost my memory card. My art's on another, disconnected computer, so it's stuck on there tonight.
I worked so hard on this concept, too. Well, at least it was a positive experience, making it.

Sapphire - Hey man Post it anyway. Even if you don't make polls, you still finished and that is what is important ! None of us will ridicule you for posting up some art for us to see! (and oddworld rocks by the way. I hope you have had a chance to look through thier art book.)
Merry Christmas fellow CHOW participators! And happy Hanukkah, and kwanza or any other religious holiday you participate in this season. I myself may not practice them, or only one of them, but I know it’s important to you guys!

so her whole thing is that she hops up onto your shoulders, puts your head into a leg lock, winds her tentacles around your torso, wraps her mouth around the back of your skull and sucks your brains out through her tongue, using the remaining space as a nest for her spores.

A side view... hopefully I have time for the front, also.
This version of the Chryssalid bursts out of its host, with the skin of its face still clinging to it. It looks through the eyes of the original human's face, and its mouthparts emerge from deep in thr throat, dislodging the jaw so that it hangs free. It walks mostly bipedally, using the points of its forelimbs for occasional balance. However, when it goes into a run, it splays its limbs and relies more heavily on quadrepedal motion. The black, whiplike threads, which grew and originated from the innards of the host, ooze from a hole in its back to infect the host once it's prone in the Chryssalid's grasp.

Hope 2007 rox yer sox! My contribution, almost unfinished 'cause I only found this thread last Saturday, and my heat just went out (again) and I have to figure out how not to freeze. R L SUX (tm). But the main subject's covered OK.

The evolved Chryssalids resulted from earlier generations bringing surviving humans back to the hive, where the queen incorporated human DNA into a new breed of soldiers that have adapted some human structural features for greater strength, speed and increased size. The tentacles in the head act similar to a jellyfish's nematocysts (stinging cells), lashing out to embed parasitical organisms in living humans. These do not grow, but instead act as internal bioengineering factories, taking over the human DNA and hyper-mutating it to produce an evolved Chryssalid without the need for the hive mother.

Thanks,
I'm glad you can tell where I'm trying to go with it. Your correct I rushed through the ortho. I totally missed that part of the instruction and added after I did the main picture. I just went back and spent some time tightening up the ortho and added some background color.
