Sky Marshall Wilhelm of his Majesties Cloud Corps, posed during munitions movment upon the S.S. Neverdock
November 29th, 2006, 01:25 PM
OK, I told myself I was going to take a break from the quick pieces, but this is too cool a topic to sit out on. Here's my working drawing so far:
"Captain Juliet Nemo of the Royal Cumulous Colonial Fleet interceptor RAS Garuda has a good reputation among the admiralty despite two rather serious black marks. The first is her temper, leading her to occasionally take risks that most captains would scarce dream of. The second is her Lineage, not that being half- Indian is an issue. Heavens no, a third of the officers in the RCCF are Indian. No, the problem is the specific Indian Prince that fathered her. That Nemo, the devil, was the man who declared 'war on war itself' and sank more than a few of our wet navy ships. Juliet, however, seems to be of a different bent. Although her ability with inventing devices and mechanisms, like those flight packs she and her men use for boarding, is frighteningly like her father's."
-Diary of Sky Admiral Ian Lethbridge, 1870
(seems to me Verne would be the O.S. (Original Steampunk))
November 29th, 2006, 02:59 PM
Yay, great topic.
Here's my final, hope you like.

Mostly just trying to loosen up my poses, make them less boring. Though I still end up using the same ones over and over...
November 29th, 2006, 09:35 PM

December 1st, 2006, 07:18 AM
Hey guys, a bit late in but its my weekend now so hopefully I can squeeze it out. Not sure if my guy is steampunk enough. Just my rough lines at this point.
UPDATE: Sorry guys I wont be making it to the poll, went and saw some local bands staurday night and ended up spending Sunday hungover and feeling sorry for my self. :S Cant wait to see all the finals in the poll tho, I really like Nicolas and Xgabo's entries so far!!
December 1st, 2006, 08:36 AM
I think I'll try my hand again, if I get the chance to finish this. I know there are some glaring issues with her and I shall adress them, at least most of them, but I like her anyway...WIPness
December 1st, 2006, 02:11 PM
This is my first serious attempt at doing a chow entry. I would colour it but without a decent program or a tablet I would just make it worse. The background is not too good and I am not expecting it to win anything I would just be pleased if it got accepted.

Heya. This is my first CHOW ever. Dunno if I'll have time to finish this, but this topic is badass, and I'd really like to. Ah well. Wish me luck, or something.
December 1st, 2006, 09:49 PM
Alright... here goes my first CHOW (so go easy on me). I kind of struggled with the size of the mech-arm, but finally decided to just go all out and make it huge and really over the top (kind of inherent when talking about mech-arms, don't you think?)
The concept behind the piece is that she is the daughter of a famous airship pilot, but as a young girl she lost both her father and her right arm when her fathers ship was shot down by pirates. She was rescued by those very same pirates and raised as one of there own, and grew to be a skilled pilot and eventually the captain of their crew. The steam powered arm is attached to her spine at her lower back with supports that run down the length of her legs (infused with the bone).
December 2nd, 2006, 01:59 AM
Alright, not sure if I'll have time to finish this and a Unique Lover, but I couldn't pass up such a wonderful topic. Here's a pencil drawing I was working on. Hopefully I'll have time to work on it some more over the weekend.
December 2nd, 2006, 05:48 AM
Final - Asian version of Steam Punk Airship Pilot
December 2nd, 2006, 07:23 AM
Well here is the final. I got my ass handed to me but at least i finished another one! Anyway good job everyone everything is looking great!
December 2nd, 2006, 07:48 AM
Trevor - I stayed up till 4am doing this just for you!!!11oneoneone lol
Wasn't going to participate in this, but Trevor made me :(! Just whipped something up so hopefuly he'll stop harassing me. I don't know if I'll have time to finish, got a few other things that need doing first :/.
After doing this, I'm pretty darn sure I have no idea what "Steam Punk" really is XD. I thought it was something victorian/historical fantasy + technology? I don't know. Sorry if this is way off the mark.... Kinda sucks, oh well lol!
Awesome designs guys :d
I bet Andrew's is sexy underneath all that sexy outfit!!!! So cool :).
Ikuru- Thanks :d! I don't think I will have the time, but I did make a more coherant sketch lol...
Chuck, mate - thaaanks, I'm glad ya like it... can't wait to see whatever you come up with (unless you're keeping the one you posted before, which is also awesome btw), since I know it'll be great :).
Sinix - sweeeeeeeeeeet dude. He almost reminds me of a steampunk version of GORDON FREEMAN! I bet that stick is a steampunk-crowbar ;).
Nicolas - sweet! I love your style :)!
mrgrumble - I always go through a period of exploding the design and starting from scratch. I like to think the quality of the work goes up then :)! Looks great! Can't wait to see the final version (though to be honest I really liked your previous one too!!!).
Damn, so many awesome artist...I'm actually really having fun with this one, though don't tell Trev. Hopefuly I'll have time to finish up at least a quick paint job on her... pretty darn busy though :(.
December 2nd, 2006, 04:53 PM
still needs a good bit of work but here is my WIP.
December 2nd, 2006, 06:43 PM
Andrewley is bringing sexy back. Dare I say, your design sense rivals anyone in the industry.
Here's my crack at it. I'll call him Captain Shemlanks of the HMS Ironcloud IV. He likes to grumble. (waves to mrgrumble)
December 3rd, 2006, 12:17 AM
So saw the subject of this and an image popped in my head...first post in this neck of the woods though I've been lurking on COW for a few months and even submitted a couple of sketches.
As usual...too late to really do anything with it seeing as I have other work I interrupted to put this down on 'paper'...but it still gives me much needed creativity practice...:) Lots of anatomy errors...never in my life have a designed a gun...and so it's probably incredibly naive and unusable and not believable and too modern...even if I wanted to give it an old hand held gun feel...same for the little blimp like ship...never done that either. Either way, I hope you enjoy it. Might get to finish it one day...might not...we'll see...work comes first and I haven't improved on speed.
He...I don't even know if I've interpreted the subject well!
Andrew...by far my favorite so far...it's just incredibly beautiful in it's simple complexity.
December 3rd, 2006, 03:48 AM
WIP for my entry... I was going to go with full-out shading like I usually do, but after I started laying in the basic shadows I decided I liked this look a lot more. I've never tried cell shading, so this is a first for me. This is also the first time I've attempted a real background since last year, so that's going to be fun, too.
Having seen the other entries, I don't know if mine is "Steampunk" enough. I guess when I think steampunk I think the technology is crazy, not the people controlling it, so my girl came out rather plain. :S
December 3rd, 2006, 12:45 PM
heres mine (I hope Im doing it right posting in here....first time for me ^^)
I dont have a wip or sketch, I did the drawing waiting for my Girl at her work....so....if Im out because of that, thats cool too... I just needed an excuse to draw some robot arms ;) and the topic fit perfectly =)
EDIT; I just saw Sinix named his char, Ill call mine...... "Baron von Schmöke"
December 3rd, 2006, 06:16 PM
There's fantastic work going on here...extremely intimidating!
Well, this will be my first posting on here at all... I was going to wait until after finals to start submitting here (really had to get the courage up) but this topic was just too good. Very near my heart :)
Anyways, here's my entry...I'll try and post a WIP for this later, but for now I should really be getting on to school work! (Lenny Long is going to kick my ass for this...)
Here it goes again:
1st Lt. Bastian Wolfe has recently abandoned his comission as a Privateer for the Grand Parliament. Once answerable directly to the Lord High Chancellor, he now finds himself doggedly pursued by Parliament's ruthless militia. He races across the air-currents, piloting the Cordonazo at the head of a flotilla of vessels in search of an impossible freedom.
Sometimes when he's bored, he likes to light his Blunderblade on fire. The other sky pirates think it looks pretty cool.
December 3rd, 2006, 07:17 PM
Whooooa great stufff this round:O . Heres my wip.... have to make it
more steampunkery though... Wanted to go for
a sovjettechpilotoldflyboyairpirate thingy kind of feel.
WIP Ps coloring (stilll not steampunkery enough :( )
December 3rd, 2006, 11:37 PM
Dang. I wish fewer people thought steampunk was as cool as i do. Some mighty fine comps here.
In the mid 21st century, after global warfare set humanity back to an industrial revolution level of technology, gangs of youngsters styling themselves as pirates and mercenaries travelled the skies in steam-powered dirgibles wreaking mischief and mayhem all across Europe and Northern Africa. Few of the gangs could reach the sucess and notoriety of fourteen-year-old Skipper Mr Chief (Skip Mischief for short) and his band of thugs, aboard the 'Raven-Hawk,' who for three years raided the entire Western Mediterranean area with seeming impunity until they were hunted down by rival gangs and eventually slain.

Arab League Pilot
"The New Age of Navigation is also the New Age of Genocide. Lighter-Than-Air Gallions cruise the superior layers of the atmosphere waging war; blood-thirsty gentlemen of all nations smoke their pipes dreaming of seeing land again one day, while burnt bodies rain from the lead-blue skies."
December 4th, 2006, 03:53 AM
Here it is. I hope I make it in time. I only had a few hours to do this so I know I'm not winning but it was fun trying.
Discord on the Skyship Martinella.
December 4th, 2006, 04:22 AM
Hope I didn't miss the deadline
December 5th, 2006, 05:32 AM
well here is my wip, not going to make the deadline, 13hr working days can do that to you. but oh well, let me know what you think.
December 5th, 2006, 09:59 AM
Well, I just started last Sunday so this is the best I can dish out... I have a "coloured" version (which is b&w), but it was kinda a rush job this version looks better... :dead:
Hey, at least I had fun!... Plus, I barely post art here...
December 5th, 2006, 07:13 PM
just doodling this evening, ended up with this:
Princess Rustide - Master Pilot of 1st Balloon Battle Brigade, Leader of Brasso Republico
December 6th, 2006, 05:31 AM
Very late and no where near finished...this one's for you Trev :teeth: I had to get in on your hosting. Too bad it didnt get done...i was actually enjoying this piece!
Oh well, hope you all enjoy it regardless, maybe ill get it finished later. Really awesome stuff! Its gonna be hard to pick
December 11th, 2006, 08:40 AM
Thank you all for your patience...
Trevor... rock on bro!
December 11th, 2006, 03:54 PM
Alright, lots of great stuff!
Glad we can multivote here!
December 12th, 2006, 12:23 AM
Andrew, Sinix and xgabo got my vote. Great characters and wonderful attention to details guys!!! :respect:
December 12th, 2006, 08:26 AM
Man, this was a tough one!
Mine went to nicolas and sinix. I decided to pick just my top 2 cause I had so many fav pieces: wafflehouseninja, AndrewLey, subtle_squid and eriboss. Really kickass work, one of the best rounds so far imho.
December 12th, 2006, 11:38 AM
Voted Nicolas. Excellent stuff, lovely style and great coloring. Cant wait to see more from you in the future.
H.M. to Andrewley, Venasque and Sinix!
December 12th, 2006, 11:53 AM
AndrewLey is some sort of rockstar here. I happen to not have voted for him, but I certainly agree his entry once again is one of the best. I think it is fascinating though, that he can get the most votes with a fairly quick monochromatic sideview of a character!!!
Actually, I think it is a little unfair that xgabo, Sinix, fedezz and others are getting noticably fewer votes... guys, great stuff! Don't be disappointed - you're competing with the Mick Jagger of concept art :p
December 12th, 2006, 02:21 PM
Voted for Nicholas! Great stuff all around, some really cool styles (fedezz, AndrewLey, Sinix, Trevor) As difficult as it is, I like to narrow it down to 1 vote...usually. :}
December 12th, 2006, 05:15 PM
v - craftysquid
Great week to everyone.
December 13th, 2006, 02:51 AM
andrei i know that rock on is sarcastic!!!!!!!!!!!
ok takin a quick break from work to let ya know i havent forgotten you!
tomorrow night the crits!
and the reasons why some of you may not have made the vote
and for some
the reasons why you did :o
December 14th, 2006, 11:50 PM
how is it this thread has more than six thousand views and less than seventy votes? How long does it take to vote? Or are we all just checking on our vote counts that often?
December 15th, 2006, 10:00 AM
mmmm, I think the chow poll threads also include the views from the original thread. It's like a copy or something like that... Oblio?
Plus, I guess people tend to check the latest installment of the Chow and might think this is an old poll, compared to #52
December 23rd, 2006, 11:13 AM
Frankly, it's probably that there are so many strong entries you have to take notes as you scroll through just to remember everybody who was good, and why. Once you have voted you can't re-vote. Therefore it sucks to vote, unless you have really taken a good look at everything, because maybe you have been unfair to somebody by forgetting how great they were.
February 18th, 2008, 04:43 PM
look what i found
February 18th, 2008, 04:45 PM
Let's not revive old CHOW threads, please, as it clutters up the shop.
If you would like, post a link in the current CHOW thread.
