Hi guys.
I'm trying to improve some points on my semi-realistic manga style. People already gave me a lot of good crits on last works and I'm adding these things here.
The main point here is: I want to draw manga style chars with more believable volumes, shading, etc, BUT without losing their manga characteristcs. Some people said to me this is not possible, but i really don't agree, and keep drawing.
Any comments crits os tips are appreciated, thanks.

And here is some face sketches I was doing last weekend. Not related to my WIP, but comments on them are useful too.

crits and tits are appreciated, thanks.
new thread w00t
and this time you are in for the panties ^^ (definitly manga)
I agree with your point to move the manga genre to look more realistic without loseing its characteristics
outlineing and cell shadeing for example are one of the most appearent characteristics of "every manga" but look at "blade of the immortal" and think twice selfasure otakus! cause it has a lot of subtle pencil shadows
outlineing on the other hand is only very important if your colour work is too simple to build volumes on its own

while most manga chars are drawn to look european yours look a lot more asian, which I like
I think this should depend on the story and single chars
colourful hair is cool :) going crazy with the haircuts is importent when it comes to manga imo
but what RLY makes a comic a manga isn't the panties, big eyes, japanese reading direction but the way the panels are aranged, speedlines are used and exegeration in some places are normal (for short)
more on this later…
(I'm quite a manga fan did you notice?)

I think you are at the limit of manga style. Try to not goin more realistic keep this tehcnique as your style.
Good job but personally I think the subject is bad taste because of the AGE AND the NUDITY, maybe it's me who exagerate.... anyways

Huahahaha, great!

Oh, really? :P
Yeah, man, this time i'm here for the panties. But more than this, I'm here to make my style better. I'm a long time manga and anime fan (more than 10 years), I started drawing big eyed chars, but some years ago I was presented for some artists like Ryoichi Ikegami, Masakasu Katsura, Shinkirou, Takehiko Inoue, and since then I felt tempted to push manga for realism. It's my main point here.
About what rly makes manga style... I agree with you, if we are talking about pages. But and what about illustrations? What i think that really make manga style are the angulous, fast and not detailed lines. You see, in cartoon or realistic style, lines are rounded, some times over detailed, worked in a way that things match better with their real form. In manga, lines are usually simplified, besides they retain the whole shape of the thing depicted. And are made fast, because usually the guys have to make 15-20 manga pages for week...
Leting this stuff aside, there goes one more up. I fixed some mistakes, and detailed some parts, like her panties. Hope you like it.

ya to me it seems like its a 13 year old or something and that seems the be because all manga/ anime to me looks like little kids

Well, that WASN'T what I had in mind. The reference pics I'm using are all of 18 girls or older... And I wanted that she looks young, but not so much! I agree with charger, this kind of faces make everybody look like kids... I believe it's one more point to take in consideration on next jobs.
About the nudity, well, I wrote about it on the title of my topic, so anybody who don't want to see, will stay away from here.
Thanks for your comments, guys.

I like it a lot too. The skin tones look good too. Only the lower arms seem a bit too orange, but it could be just my monitor. Nice work.

i like it, but to make it real anime style, you have tu add some highlights! her hair really needs some light.

Her nipples look kind of like pepperonis or something. Like they are seperate from her body. The raised edge does that I think.

I think she looks much younger due to how low some of features are on the face area. Plus, the very stylized face with the un stylized anatomy make the two parts not fit together properly(imo). You have good tones going on though, interesting angle as well.

Thanks ofr all your feedback, guys. I'm a little tired for individual replies, but @Vboys: Man, practice realistic drawing for some years, and you will draw everything you want!
I fixed all things that were bothering me and now, I think it's finished.

ppppanties!
I was gonna drop some names but you've already mentioned them. Heard of this guy though? http://www7.big.or.jp/~hakua/
I think your image is missing ambient color and reflective light. That red surface would color the butt of the panties red. The different parts of the pic need to tie together with the scene. The image has a very ref'ed look to it too. Maybe try to see where you can use flats (defined light/shadow), what curves could be played, where you can put soft and hard edges, etc.

That strong shadow in the crotch is bothering me.
EDIT: I get an F- for typos.
EDIT 2: I can only imagine what old man Prometheus|ANJ is gonna be like. He's already 80% of the way to being Happosai.

Prometheus|ANJ. Great point. In fact I used ambient color and reflexive lights. See her shirt, or her blueish chest or reddish legs. But for what you said I believe I have to be more agressive on next works.
I won't rework the light, but i'll adjust the shadow on her panties soon.
Thanks for you all guys.

For those who didn't like the dark shadow on her panties, there goes the softened shadow version. This is really the final :P

Fantastic. My primary problem with manga-esque styles is.. putting a flat, cartoony faces on such a realistic body. But, I guess a lot of people like that.
Glad you fixed the shadow at her crotch. It looked like a stain, before.
I think one thing to be remembered is that areola are just different color and texture of the same breast skin. It is not raised, so much as it may just swell.

I agree with the whole manga thing. That is why manga artist's have to be really really really good to be able to pull off the whole cartoon face on realistic body look, otherwise it would just be creepy. I am glad you said about the shadow at the crotch, earlier it did look like she was on her period. It is good now though. And about the areola, perhaps it is just cold in her room? LOL
Since she looks like she is 12 years old, I really feel like a perv looking at it, I like it, and that makes me feel like a perv also. I just figure that she is actually like 20 or something, because those asian chics all look really, really young untill they hit about age 40. Then they deteriorate into instant old crones!

I know that manga heads can be exaggerated. But I'm curious to see how much you can draw more attention to the perspective by changing the head size.
