[ A caver is someone who explores caves for fun. ]

[ I was gonna use the term "spelunker", but apparently that word is considered derogatory by many cavers. ]

[ Go figure. ]

[ Sometimes it seems like people just look for reasons to be offended by the rest of the world. ]

[ But, I digress... ]

[ So, here are our cavers, going about their enjoyable business... ]

[ ...When they come across something that they are certainly not expecting. ]

[ Therein lies your "open-ended"ness. ]

[ Hit the tablets. ]

Fantastic pics here.

Hideyoshi how do you do it. Idiot and machzero, Hamsta looking good. DeadLineStudios blown away by your pic (but i think it is for the rounded port drawoff.) goran one of the best i have seen from you nearly beating the half man bike thing you drew a while ago.

Hopefully, after a couple of weeks of these, I'll be looser.
I only wanted to spend an hour, it ended up being more like 1.5 hours.

Havent done one of these in a while. Still trying to work up enough balls to really start posting here. Machzero, thermaloptic, really nice ones!
Mine, maybe an hour or so? Should have paid more attention to the caver. I was too conerned with anglerfish-ness over there.

well, second post here. i have such a hard time drawing freehand with my tablet- im much better with photo manip and scanning things in, but it seems that the people here have many good critiques to offer. -therefore, i shall keep at it. (unless my free hand tablet skill level is not allowed here, if so- please notify me. no biggie.) Thanks. http://ic3.deviantart.com/fs7/f/2006/345/3/a/cave_by_h4k70r.jpg

Hideyoshi - Not sure who's the caver and what's the surprise, but it's still pretty cool. Nice feeling of light and texture and that's kinduv a groovy Robocop-ish figure in the foreground.

Idiot - A bit small... And maybe a bit more detail would be nice, but you charged after some perspective, and there's a great contrast between the serious, but oblivious, expressions of the cavers and the expressions they're bound to have in just a moment.

machzero - Although it's a bit difficult to quite understand what's going on, what I do understand I quite like. There's something really provocative to me about this bizarre scene.

Hamsta - Hmm... The stalagmite on the left doesn't really read as positive, it reads as negative which confuses the understanding of the fleshy mouth pit. Also, because that same feature sorta lines up with that lighter area to the upper left, it's hard to tell if they're actually describing the same form or not. Finally... Is.. Is that guy a little bird-man with a beak, or is that just his head-lamp? I am worried for him. :(

goran - I dig the beast, although his pose is somewhat static... the people are nicely realised... however, the environment and composition really bother me. everything (except for the people) seems like it's rotated counter-clockwise by 30˚ or so.

Mitze - I ran into a similar problem where I was so focused on trying to create the environment and the cavers that I didn't know what to do for the surprise. I like little explorer, the crocodile, and the sense of atmosphere you created here. There's something very tangible in this.

thermaloptic - Great sense of depth here. You really used a great approach, and even though this is also rotated 30˚ or so, it works. Don't be too self-conscious about what you perceive as a lack of looseness... Everything takes practice, nobody should apologize for trying to expand their techniques, and this has quite a bit of looseness in it anyways. Good one.

Dragonlady - I'm wondering if maybe the creature is a bit too well lit here... A fun pic, though. The little guy's got character. :)

Well, here's mine. This was a painful struggle, and I think the only thing it accomplished was getting me to try out using different brushes, but maybe that's enough. I went into it conceptually and technically unprepared.

I'm feeling my way into painting, but I'm a bit lost. I have some simple understanding of light/form, but when it comes composition/perspective/etc.... not so much. As I work on my basics, any direction I can get here through critiques is welcome.

Bill Good crits, I need to ponder :D it's a head lamp btw
Hard to read yours at first glance, in particular, those eggs threw me off at first, I thought they were some sort of lights, or maybe it's the fault of the big black void in the center...
