Hope you don't mind I messed around with your environment, not sure if I improved it but this is what I did:
- repetition in architectural elements, large foreground elements to dramatize the scale and flesh out structures, more light on clouds to create volume, angled the horizon line, extended sky upwards and to the left, scaled down the mountain.
To my eyes doing those things makes it more "epic" and visually everything bounces around with more life. Let me know if that helps :)
~ Stephen
[edit] Had fun with the paintover, I added an analysis of how these things are working.

i really like your work overall. figures look on point to me, i love the closeups on those faces. your environments are really well done as well, i like how much info u can get out of them. i think the only thing that really stood out to me strangly was in the first few post (primarly the 2nd) it feels as if the subject and the background are almost 2 different entities entirely. try using some of the colors from the surrounding environment and add little highlights or minor dabs of color on the subject to ease in that transition. overall amazing stuff though, id like to see more.

Hey, theres some real potential in these. The colours are still a bit murky or overly saturated at points, and they lack finish, but these will both come with practice and observational studies. Work a little with your anatomy too, like Kovah said - and you'll be well on your way.

Very good, I'd like to see your comic. It seems like you could use more practice in simple shapes (you know like drawing boxes in perspective), and apply it to the figures and some buildings. Your paintings look really good, specially the landscapes. You have a good imagination, don't lose it.

Hey, its me!
ive just joined the Cgsociety Challenge!! this time its all about steampunk.
"The largest CGChallenge ever, with over US$220,000 in prizes!
In this, the 23nd CGChallenge, entrants are challenged to depict their favorite myth or legend, with a steam-punk aesthetic, via a still image or video.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Steampunk is the application of advanced steam age technology to a modern or science fiction setting.
This challenge asks you to render traditional myths and legends in the steampunk style using elements of gears, springs, brass and steam power. Re-imagine legendary characters from some of the world's most ancient stories, such as a steam-powered minotaur, or a Zeppelin-mounted Thor, hurling lightning bolts from the sky."
here's the link to the contest.

UUh good stuff amigo. I like the latest stuff, spescially that illustration. When it comes to the steampunk stuff, it seems a little shallow, you might want to go back and look over the design, maybe put in some more boilers and pistons and what not. That would not only add believability, but also a lot of interest:)

there isn't any depth to the inside of the chest on the main monster dude, it looks kinda flat. otherwise i'm excited about your egyptian challenge piece :D

all i got to show today is a dragon sketch i did, wanted it to be like a forest dragon, if i spent some more time on it i would probably have added some flowers and stuff! but im moving, so i gotta pack :|

November 21st, 2008, 02:46 PM
i think if you made the dragon eyes larger it would look more menacing or dramatic or something. they look kinda squinty right now ^^
i think if you added highlights to the rim of the open chest on your last piece then it would look more 3d.

lovely work on those back grounds and environments!
nice speed painting and lighting on them. and great use of varied brushes ^^
only CC i could give is probably the lighting on the subjects you draw, they tend to have a flatter lighting compared to the lighting on the back ground? it makes it look kind of pasted.
but other than that, keep it up! i also see that you've improved on your anatomy, just keep practicing on it and both your BGs and Subjects would look awesome! ^^

the colors do look nice in the last environ. if it were realistic maybe you would desaturate some areas based on the lighting...but it's more fun this way anyways :D

AWW DUDE YOU'VE GOT GREAT STUFF HERE!!!! :D:D:D
i'm not half as good as you but i hope i can comment. hp was right about the flatness bit. you are nearly there, just have to get the shadows and highlights right to show the form.
keep it going, you'll get it soon!

Checked out your sketchbook and found that I really like your environments. You have some really nice pieces on the first two pages. You also seem to be pretty good a drawing soldiers, and I would like to see some more of those.
I'll try keeping an eye on this thread.

hi there espy! pretty nice stuff out here. I really like the cloth rendering and colors. sometimes joints turn out flat tough -like the bowsman's shoulder and the dragon.
the bow'sman's shoulder was evident from the first sketch, where you kinda put a line between arm and back, where there should be a big shoulder plain. watch those plains in real life and get them in there!

December 14th, 2008, 04:33 PM
hm doesn't look flat to me. I actually like the colors a lot.
however there is a problem with perspective. the horizonline is somewhere waist-high for the character in front, but you can still look inside the building far up as if you where standing right in front of it.
you should see it from a lower angle.
another little thing that might help to get a better sense of scale and depth is having smaller vegetation on the rocks to the left.
they should be the same distance as the building and compared to the figures inside they look huge.
but really lots of potential in this one! keep working.
hp
December 14th, 2008, 06:33 PM
looks flat because you need to bring either the left or the right side of that cliffy region forward. it looks kind of boring compositionally if they are exactly even.
colors looks great tho! :D

December 15th, 2008, 11:18 AM
bigfooTrooper: yeah i could do that, maybe ad some kind of a fence or a line or something, ill try it out! thanks
monotony: Yeah you're totally right! ill try to repaint it or something, like a friend over at a diffrent forum said, it would be cool to see a face in the water too, maybe that could also add some scale, it will be exciting to see. thanks
Hp: HELLO. i guess you're right, a friend added more darker and saturated colors to the cliff where the structure is, that really helped bringing it forth and made it look less flat. thanks

so i guess ive only told some about my plan for next year. in january, i'm going to apply to a job!
im not completely sure about the theme of the game, its a mmorpg in modern time thats all i know. so im going to work on a portfolio that shows what i think would look cool for a mmorpg set in modern time!
ive had a wow account since the day it came out, probably just played 5% of the 4 years its been up, but it made me understand how a mmorpg works.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v697/Espengenin/funcomthumbnails2copy.jpg
so in thumbnail 1 and 2, i tried to design a place where you would fight some creatures and monsters, i probably should expand the field so it would be possible to run around more, but i think it looks kinda entertaining when there's more composition involved.
thumbnail 3, so after playing alot of wow instances i pretty much know how boss fights work as well. so my picture of a boss fight, is that you pretty much stays at one place and go trough phases until youve taped all its Health points. so in this picture i decided to have a modern day "new york" alley, where there's this BIG octopus, meat eating plant protecting some treasure or armory behind it. once the players has killed it, they can get to the armory and get a level 600 machine gun or some crazy stuff like that :P
in the 4 picture, i decided to have some guy practice his magical skills, maybe a trainer for some demon class. its set on a rooftop, with curtains and big cloths hanging above. something like that..
so im going to push this to final illustrations, and include them in my portfolio. im also going to do alot of character designs, monster and creature designs and so on...
tell me what you think, i really need your help!! :D

December 16th, 2008, 03:07 PM
nice stuff dude! I especially like the 3rd panel in the latest update, it's something about the combined use of solid surfaces and organic mass that really makes the picture interesting. for some reason I'm not too fond of the 4th image, but I have no idea why...so I better stop right here :) (it might be because pretty much everything in the picture is screaming for the same level of interest, which makes the picture a little difficult to look at...the other images lead the eye much more effectively. go figure.)
keep it up!

ruuhkis: Thanks man, yeah the forth image is pretty dull, it was the last i did and it was whiped up in like 5 minutes. didnt put enough JUICE into that one :P
for this picture, i imagined that the head was from a summoned storm golem, i also like to think that there's a summoner class or a sculpture that can summon his/her creations to life! but in this picture, that creation is beheaded! :|
not to happy with it. i want it to look more Craig mullins'ie, but thats fucking hard.

G'damn, inorite? I love the Mullins style, so rough and the atmosphere is fantastic, but even if this doesn't really appear to be the style exactly, like the lighting.
