Hello, i took a most unfortunate break from the conceptart forums and have decided to start a new sketchbook in hopes of keeping it constant. anyway it'll be good to hear from some old friends as well as some new faces. i'll start off with some work from this semester. i'm sorry i dont have access to my scanner right now. First is a sketch for an oil painting i began today. crits welcome. :)

From the look of it you have a lot of talent and vision. I'd really like to see what you do next. Keep posting.

Environmental/fabric artists Christo and Jean-Claude spoke at my school (VCU) today. Though i'm not that fond of their work they were very entertaining and had a great dynamic together. Here are some quick moleskine sketches from their presentation. crits are much appreciated.

Hey everyone. So i've been sitting in on a figure drawing class that Danny Robbins is teaching (metalwinds) and it is completely amazing. It's really helped to loosen me up and experiment more. Here are a couple random sketches messing with new materials. (no ref, 10-15 min. each) charcoal and sumi ink.

thanks blaz
Here are some random sketches from a couple sketchbooks. a lot of these are just things i do during class instead of taking notes (hence the backs of heads). mix of ref and trying to do more nonref work. anyway hopefully i'll have some watercolors and oils soon. thanks for looking.

i started messing around with photoshop and gave it my first real try. i really need to get into digital color work but i'm not sure how the palette works in photoshop (dont know which colors relate/which to choose on the huge color selection thing) i guess i just need to mess around and look at some tutorials.

Here's a quick charcoal sketch using Metalwind's process. It's nothing compared to his stuff but it really is a good way to make something out of nothing and get expressive.

Umm, so your work is absolutely freaking gorgeous and awesome, why has no one said annyyyytthhhing? I don't even know what to critique, things look really good to me, and you seem to know what to do/ what you need to study more of. I would take a good look at your eye sockets in the self portrait, they seem kinda shallow. I'm totally digging your up-and-down pencil shading angle, it's so cool looking. You've posted some highly technical gizmos here and there, I'd interested in seeing more of those - you're really awesome at organic forms, I'd like to see how your approach translates to man made things.

Hey guys, sorry it's been while I've been really busy with school and getting my portfolio ready to apply to my actual major. (illustration) I haven't had time to scan in any sketchbook pages but i'll have a big update fairly soon. For now here's a picture of a 6 foot charcoal self portrait I did last weekend for class. Crits welcome as always.

that gigantic charcoal SP is really well done, the wrinkles on the shirt work especially well. your face slightly stylised but it works really well. Cool to see something so large. Would be cool to have you stand next to it, that`ll sure mess with the viewers mind :]

thanks a lot banshax.
Sorry for the lack of updates guys I've been busy with schoolwork. Here are a couple sketchpages and quick ink studies (sumi, hi tec). Thanks for looking.

Good progress, I especially like the last couple of posts, I think the inks and the mixed media stuff is working well. :teeth: That six footer and the monkey on the rocket, are cool too. :)

thanks a lot bojee, i'll have more of the mixed media stuff soon.
sorry for the lack of stuff, i'm really busy getting my portfolio together for next thursday. i also have 5 self portraits to finish by tuesday, and another 6 footer. for now heres a quick self portrait pencil/ink/marker/chalk study. the painting is my first still life from my oil painting class. its burnts sienna only rubbed out and added onto from a midtone. i've done 3 oil paintings since but haven't gotten them back from my teacher yet. i'll update with those and more drawings/self portraits in the near future. comments and crits very welcome.

Great work, you will definitely get in CA with all this awesome stuff up here... well, especially that self-portrait. Nice work! See you next year in the halls haha :)
I dunno' if we have a meeting tomorrow or not.. Anderson gallery opens its CA section of art that got in, I got a piece in there.. but it's 5-7, who knows. ^_^

thanks for the comments naomi, really means a lot. yeah i'm really looking forward to the department, i'll have to check anderson out, congrats.
anyway here is a study of one of george pratt's (amazing artist/former teacher here) process with boat varnish. Directly with pen and ink then a wash, then highlights. I know it's not a lot but i'm still really busy, i'll have a good update next weekend. Thanks for looking everyone.

Dude, lovin your book. Pratt is indeed a god among men, very cool to see to someone trying out that boat varnish!
Your line work is showing a lot of confidence and I like that you're trying out all these mediums with a gung ho attitude. Good luck in getting into CA, I'm sure you'll have no problems. When you get in take every possible class that Sterling Hundley teaches, he's a freakin gold mine.
Word!

thanks a lot andy, the stuff on your site looks really nice. yeah pratt is a huge influence for me, wish i could have had a class with him. sterling's work is great too.
here's a pice of another 6 foot-ish portrait. i'm struggling a lot more with this one. here's the most developed part (i know, bad habit but i was really struggling and wanted to be pleased with something before going on) i basically have to finish this tonight so i'll probably post it soon.

March 28th, 2007, 10:22 AM
Hey everybody, here's the finished portrait, about 4 x 5 feet this time. i don't like it nearly as much as the last but it was a much harder pose/lighting. i got a little too hung up on smoothing things and it lost some of the expression of the first i think. anyway here it is.
p.s.- i uploaded a new photo of the last self portrait so you can scroll up to get a better look at that again.

here are a few small sketches for now. portfolios are finally over. i'm working on a comic for my final project this semester. I'm throwing around a lot of ideas and working to find which combination of mediums I like the best. Anyway I'll post more on that as it happens, thanks for looking.

thanks solon, means a lot coming from you.
so i was accepted to the illustration program at my school so i'm happy about that. i've been expermenting with different styles for the comic i'm working on (i'm still waiting for some pen nibs in the mail to start the real thing so i'm messing around with the layout right now). anyway hope you like the stuff, the first page is just a random sketchbook page.

great stuff - keep it up
edit: oops forgot to crit this - http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=124440&stc=1&d=1176842178 - i know you said it was a crappy update or whatever, and its not that great because of the placement of the same tone of reds making it flat. the line quality is great though! :3

April 28th, 2007, 02:17 AM
hey guys. first are two examples of how these panels start out before the watercolor. i'm gonna begin the color on those tomorrow. the last is another panel i finished this morning (the scanner here is too small to get the whole picture). thanks for looking everyone.

Great stuff here, really nice. I like the loosness and confident use of materials. And I really like that it's all traditional media so far. It's not that I hate computers but...yeah I kinda' do.
If I'd had half your talent when I was twice your age I'd be three times the artist I am now.

heya Dako,
Wow. Just wow. your work has really come a long way since I saw it last - really quite inspirational.
I love your ink and wash studies - especially from the Duelists, one of my favorite movies.
You are really doing well with your work. I look forward to seeing more.
Cheers,
~Shane

thanks a lot shane. hopefully when i eventually get to travel we'll get to sketch together sometime. hope all is going well for you.
the first painting is a simplified color/plane study using a palette knife. i'm still new to painting so it's helped me a lot to practice color mixing/color in general. the second is a curent still life i'm working on that i'll hopefully finish. the scanner couldn't fit it all so its cropped weird. anyway thanks for looking.
