:lens: I hereby showcase this lensflare to emphasize that I'm still fairly new to the site. I figured it's a good metaphor that means "watch out, noob ahead." But in all seriousness...

I've been painting for a couple years, mostly digitally (because I'm too cheap a coot to buy materials). CA has been a great influence to push me further to the next level, and I think the time is nigh that I return to CA to show where I stand now.

Here's an image showing the progression of the image.

1) The sketch of the image, handed to me by comic illustrator Jamie. My mission, to do a complete paintover with none of the original lines visible in the end product.

2) First step. Blocking out the contours of the wardrobe. Using the pen tool in Photoshop, all the basic color and form elements are blocked out.

3) Tone is established. Beginning at the rump of the character, a general tone is set up to show where main light will be coming from. It is currently uncolored, unpolished, and exists simply to show where the highlights and shadows will project upon further refining.

4) Second pass on tone. Light colors are determined, and established for easy sampling via eyedropper in the canvas itself.

5) Steps 3 and 4 are repeated on the remainder of the wardrobe. With the main wardrobe piece in the desired tone, the rest are easier to place. Volumetric contours, facial details in particular, begin to form, and will from this point onward be in a perpetual stage of constant refinement.

6) A quicksketch for a background is completed, and adjusted using color balance and levels/tone modifications to ensure the background matches the foreground character. A series of adjustment layers are put into place for final effects. An environment layer with a narrow fog effect is put above everything else in layer hierarchy.

So yeah, lay them crits on me if you've got 'em. Preferably on the painting itself, not so much the lines in step 1, as I didn't make the lines. Thanks a lot, everyone.

her top hands fingers look fat, and the hair should be dented more I think, rather than sprouting out of her palm like that. Her face could use some work... she's not very pretty. Nice render though and as far as I can tell the rest of the anatomy is good :).
