Okay, this is my first attempt at making this thing.

I am a student at the Art Institute in Minnesota. I am going for animation.
I sketch damn near everyday for atleast 30 minutes. Lately it has been ten times that since I'm in school and all...

I would really like to know what you guys think... so here we go people! :bashful:

!st: 1st finished pen drawing (My favorite!)

2nd: A lion drawn from the Como Zoo.

3rd: A monochromatic semi-abstract tiger painting assignment

4th: A drawing from a while ago

And the rest I did for a practice portfolio in a portfolio foundations class.
Enjoy!

Good start on the sketchbook. I've fill mine mostly inthe last week in a half so I know the feeling of just starting. I like the leather feel to the pants on the figure drawing.

Oh come on people!
I need more input than this!

I mean... cream? Really?

Yeah, I noticed that right away. My friend said he looked like he had an anemic leg.
Also, on the figure with leather, his chest looks a little squished and the arms look goofy...
:)

maybe, somewhere on this world there must be a lion with an anemic leg? :}
but still, i like the way you did its head and the manes
how long did you work on the two last ones? they're wicked :)

Well the pen one was worked on while I have a 4 hour break between classes on Mondays and Wednesdays... it took a couple weeks or so. But I only worked on it during my break on those days.
The other one was done in a weekend. I started on it kind of late, so I was a little rushed. It was done with acrylic, and I am not a huge fan of acrylic. But it turned out okay I think.
I will try to put up a better pic of it soon.

okay, thanks :)

i prefer to compare drawings to icecream
1) sometimes it looks beautiful (like the children-icecreams that look like clowns :})
2) icecream is so good that i can never get enough, same with looking at drawings
3) icecream = sweet, drawings = sweetness

don't know what i'm blabbing about here :D
point being: your drawings are neat :)

i'm not that patient, i'm afraid to work on a drawing for a week
the longest i ever worked on a drawing was on that dragon and that took me about an hour or so
*bows* so i verymuch respect your work

Shannon,
You got some wonderful sketches. I really like your imagination and the details. Your sense of shape works very well on your creatures/animals but lose some life on your figures. Figure drawing is more of a challenge to see the shapes. ONe thing that helped me grow faster was to draw sketch shapes in my sketchbook without thinking then look into the shape even if you have to turn your sketchbook upside down to see something then pull it out. Draw the detail into it. You will be amazed at what you will draw with little effort. It's a process I call reacting to the shapes which is different then starting a drawing with something in mind. Just thoughts. Keep up the good work.
Thank you again for you comments on my work.

Finally got some more drawings scanned in.
The first two are sketches.
The next is some expressions and different noses and lips.
The next is a work in progress.
And the final, I used a picture from somewhere (I don't remember) as a reference and changed some things. Also a work in progress.
Tell me what you think! :bashful:

Great to see new drawings. Keep it up!
I hope your teachers are teaching you good principles and approach.

Here is some more info about some of the methods that have helped me.

Here is some of the basic ideas I use in my work. These are a few screen I use when I have taught art in college and workshops. As I have focused on learning these principles more, drawing and painting has become easier. One of the artist I study is Andrew Loomis. In his "creative Illustration and fiqure drawing for all it's worth" books he goes into detail about these principles. In art school I heard these ideas but never had a mentor show me how to apply them until I met some professional artists and started bugging them to teach me. I hope these ideas can help others on this forum to reach higher in growing as an artist.
Two of the principles(just to cover a few of the principles) I use are line and shape. If you can make your eye move through the drawing it will appear to have more life. If your eye stops or gets pulled too many directions your brain says bad drawing. The shape and silhouette is so important! Man this one opens up some many doors especially shapes within shapes. One exercise that I do to develop my eye to see better shape is to move my pencil around and create interesting shapes on the page. Then I look into it and find something to respond to and pull out the details and develop it. So many wild drawing come out sometimes scary, sometime just wacky and sometimes dynamic. When I was an art director I would have all of my animators render their character as a black silhouette so we could talk about what the shape says to the eye.

This stuff has become a daily thought process everytime I draw. It's the desire to breathe life into a drawing. My journey is on going. I have some visual examples on my sketchbook thread. Hope this helps.

Fishead - you always give the best tips. I am very grateful for that.
Thank you very much.
Miro - That last work in progress is my favorite that I have done in awhile.
Thanks.
Darvon - The faries were really quick sketches, and I'm glad you like them.
The eye study was really fun. I will have many more of those, seeing how I love eyes and draw them everywhere. Best feature on the humans and animals alike. (That is what I believe anyway.)

anubis713

Thanks man! That was my first attempt at animal gestures, so it is good to here somebody likes them.
They aren't completely accurate or anything, but it was fun.

Deverion
December 19th, 2006, 11:21 AM
I noticed you like cats. :D

I love animal gestures, you should definetely work on those whenever you can. I'll take a wild guess that you might have a cat or two, so I would suggest studying them closely; the way their weight shifts and the muscles act while they are walking or resting.

Those eye studies are nice as well. I would follow Fishhead's advice and check out some of Andrew Loomis' books. Of course, it will never be able to replace being in a studio with a model, but it's a good start. I'm trying to study from Loomis myself whenever I have the time. I think the key is to capture the essence of the figure as quickly as possible, and then go back and start really looking carefully at the intricacies of the outline and individual shapes in the body. Anyways, keep posting. :)

anubis713
December 19th, 2006, 11:47 AM
Yeah, you are right. I have four cats. I just can't have enough of them. I probably will end up as a crazy old cat lady someday.

I did have a 6 hour long class where we sat and drew a model. It was pretty fun. I probably won't post those until after Christmas though.

Hey anubis713 :). I guess what I might suggest is to do more of those simple shape break-downs for your figure drawings like you did with your cat sketches (which looks the most confident out of your sketchbook btw). I reckon you'll really benefit from it.

Oh yeah, I think what you did with those lips/eyes practice is on the right track too.

Hey anubis.
I see you've been getting a lot of good critique here..hmmmm... what hasn't been mentioned?
I really like your crumbling girl... I think if you coloured it and polished it up a bit it'd make quite a nice piece! :)
I really think you could benefit from looking at a few girly magazines and studying the dynamics of hair. Having ever hair 'clump' or strand end in some curley-cue just doesn't look right.

Anyway, that's all I can contribute right now :) Keep postin~

Act.Appalled
December 20th, 2006, 04:20 AM
another ai student!

good start to the sketchbook, my main critiques would be to be more confident in your lines.

dont want to sound rude, but lose the anime-ish style, study and understand the realistic figure before learning the shorthand. Loomis, Bridgeman are good places to start...Also look at Kevin Chen, and henryyanart.com for good figure stuff...

overall your strongest pieces are your cat gestures, they have the most confident and are the most proportional accurate of all your works...apply these principles to all your works, add a dose of hard work and tons of drawing and you're golden...

dont get discouraged, keep drawing and postin up!

Hello!

Thanks for visiting my thread so often! I guess you are one of those few who actually like me stuff :) So few actually embrace the pencil nowadays... therefore its nice to see stuff like yours!

From what I've seen in your works, your shading style looks similar to mine, but with a flair of your own, so I think I'll share what I've learnt using that soft shading style.

For starters, you need to be very bold with your shadows, because when doing all that pressure control/smudge to obtain the gradient, we normally forget the big picture, and the picture on a whole turns out very flat. I took a picture you posted here and applied a rough value coat over it to let you see my point. (If you do not like such thing on your thread, please say so, I will remove it immediately!)

Note how the lady now has more volume.

You need to determine a very specific point light is coming from to make an effective picture with values. Try not to create a universal light source, but use side lighting, like those they use in theatres to bring out the form of the dancers. To practice, use a torchlight on an object and do simple still life. This will remove the confusion (unless intentional) from pictures like the man lying on a rose-like pedestal many posts up.

Okie, all for now. I hope I helped you a little. :)

Now that I have a dig. camera, I can post at home. Not just at school.
Some may be a little blurry. Sorry!
Any comments and crits are def. welcome!

1st: A piece I did for my sister who recently had a miscarriage in her 5 months of pregnancy. She was really hurt by it, so I thought this may cheer her up.
2nd: Close up of baby angel.
3rd: A quick pen drawing
4th and 5th: Faces in progress
6th: Horse in progress
7th: Horse that will soon have some kind of evil wings
8th: Project I did during my first class at school. A non-objective graphite drawing
9th: Tiger that I started a long time ago. Thought I would add it.
10: A sp I did for class. Camera didn't really get the shading right.

Enjoy!!

Amazing update. I've been ghosting this thread, waiting to see some more and very nice updates, and you delivered. I like the baby angel you did for your sis. I was asked by a friend to draw a tattoo for her 2 kids, so I was looking for something that would do some kind of justice for her...think you may have just helped me do that!

I also like the faces and the SP, though I think the face may be wider (sorry if that is actual :P) than it should be. I'm getting that from the side of the nose on the left and the width of both of the eyes. But great update!

Wow Shannon! Awesome new work!! and a bunch of it. Kougansharde you had some great comments on the values. Nice post.

Shannon I can see your style emerging. First of all you have a strong sense of design. I love what you are doing with your shapes and design patterns. The baby angel is a strong conceptual piece especially why it was done. The 3rd image which is the quick pen sketch. Awesome design patterns. I see that coming through in a lot of your pieces. You did the same thing in the eyes on the next few faces. Very cool. Nice shapes. So much of creating a good image is letting the shapes come alive and take a life of there own.
So here are some things to think about focusing in on in your work. (I hope that you don't mind some input.)
A method of learning that has helped me is too focus in on foundation principles a few at a time instead of trying to learn too much too soon.
The 2 areas I would encourage you to start doing more exploration in are:
Oveall composition- Experiment with composing an idea in many different formats. I have a sketchbook that is just my idea book. I will take an idea and try it different layouts in rough sketches almost doodles before I decide on a final composition. I'll do little thumbnails and try different arrangements to give myself more choices. The more you do changes are you will push the idea to another level. With your design sense on objects, I think you will be surprised at the compostions you will come up with. Once you draw the edges of the picture you force yourself to compose. Another trick is too sketch the elements individually on tracing paper and move them around and try different arrangements.
The other area to look into is Light and Shadow. This is the real fun stuff!!
Learn to design with your shadows and highlights. It's not just shading but it is like your cool designs you do on eyes or hair or whatever. When I am blocking in a shadow it is a shape that needs to have a good design to it. When I am painting I think about the highlight shapes the same way.
It's not that you don't have any understanding it is that if you work on these areas your artwork will have a stronger impact to the eye. Color is something I would hold off on (unless you have classes on color theory)
Wow I just wrote a book. Sorry about that. I'll see if I can dig up some of my notes to pass on to you.
Andrew Loomis books are a great resource on this info. Fiqure drawing for all it's worth book and Creative Illustration is the best overall book (if you can find it)
Have fun drawing. Keep it up.:blahblah:
Blessings

Goodness buddy!
Awesome advise! I love hearing what people have to say. It helps so much. It is funny you bring up thumbnails.
In the class I did that non-objective design for, we had drawn 20-30 thumbnails before our final pieces. We did that for every project. It is a very helpful technique.
I will def. look into those books.
Thank you very much!!

Nice stuff you have going on hear. Loosen up the grip on the pencil and try squinting when you are shading. That will help you to place your tones and values in the right place. This way you notice if something is unbalanced in the drawing. Hope this helps.

ayeeee anubis...

thanks for swinging by my book, much appreciated:wink:

as for yours, I love being able to physically see the progress, its inspiring to see artists like yourself move forward. my personal piece of advice would be to practice construction/proportion sketches, i think a solid foundation to draw on really sets you up for a good piece...perhaps study some skulls...really study them and draw what you see. remember to draw what you see, not the preconceptions you already have in your mind. its hard to avoid it but this seems to be the hardest part when drawing from referance.

I love your tigers, the latest is great:confident

You show great potential, and thats always very refreshing to see!
I'm sorry I don't have any advice to give you that you have not allready been given. I am confident that doing shape studies, life drawings and reading a few Loomis books will lay one of the best foundations you can have.

While I also agree with some of the others about losing the anime style for a while, you can definitly go back to it once you feel confident in your anatomy knowledge. You've probably been told this before; but by distorting proportions, you should have a good idea of what it is you are distorting (anime-style is all about that). But still, I really find your two Fairy drawings in post #15 very nice to look at :)

Keep posting!

Do you know Andrew Larson? I worked with him up until last week, and he goes to the Institute.

Anyways, you're excellent at drawing animals. With people you, sometimes, rely too much on hard lines when you should use shading (ie. cheeks, lips). Think of the face as topographical (think elevation lines on a map).

Another thing I think you could work on is your texture. A lot of that comes with time, but also with using shading as a form of sculpting, through soft directional lines, etc. It's kind of hard to explain without examples.

But yea, keep up the good work and look closely at how the professionals add texture to their drawings. I'm sure that'll be very important with animation as well.

No offense but your Art post v. reply post ratio in this sketchbook is really low.. like 1:4 or something. Try to do enough art so every reply you make has at least 1-2 piece of art in it. It's a great motivator.

Bunny - Thank you for stopping by. I will def. do so. Thank you for your help.

Dark Artist - Thank you! Hey, if you work at it, maybe one day it could be! You never know!

JFS - Thanks for the tip buddy.

Conceptzaholic10 - Thank you.

TomCardin - Thank you. I like to here that. Some people despise the way I do hair, and some really enjoy it.

Condeotteire - Thanks for the tips. Andrew Larson? Does he go to the Art Institute in Minneapolis? If so, what year is he in? I will look into studying texture more.

Miro - Hey! Great to hear from ya! Glad you liked them buddy!

JustinOaksford - I know. It is quite bad. It is hard putting in art when school isn't in session. I don't have a scanner, and using my camera takes forever to touch up on the photos. But school starts again soon, and I will have tons more art in here. Glad you stopped by. Maybe next time you could reply to some of my art. :)

Matsign - Thanks buddy! And there will be plenty more, I promise!

SESpider - Thank you very much! I'm glad to hear that! I am thinking about that team project piece. I think that would be fun. I will think of something.
I don't go back to school until Monday, so I will be without a scanner until then.

Until then, thout I would post this.
This is a wip obviously. It is a cardinal I am possible going to give to my mother. An avid bird lover.
I haven't done a whole lot with oil paints, and it shows. :bashful:
But anywho, I will post my progress with this one.

Very nice figure studies...wish they didn't scan so blurry but I can see that the values are well done and the figure have a lot of form. I know I learn a lot each time I do life drawing studies...hopefully you'll have access to a life drawing class at your art school, highly recommend it.

Thank you for visiting my sketchbook!

They're from LA I think

here's their myspace, most of their songs are with a bit of comedy in 'em
http://myspace.com/sayanything
it could be that you'll find my a weird kid after listening to them
("Wow i can get sexual too" is a wicked song :p the toon is catchy
i saw my ex-girlfriend sing along with that song..i couldn't stop laughing for at least 3 minutes)

p.s. the bird looks pretty neat already :) i bet your mother will be very happy to get it

TomCardin - Thanks. I haven't done a whole lot of life studies, but I am working on doing more. I did take a drawing and perspective class, in which we learned the basics of life drawing. I look forward to more classes and soaking everything in that is taught to me. And also try to learn as much possible. That is why this site is so great! Oh! And the reason my pictures are so fuzzy is because I am using my camera. I am not at school at this time, so I do not have a scanner. School starts tomorrow, so I will have access to a scanner. Meaning better quality pictures. And come cg stuff.

Envisor - Thanks for stopping by. Trying all different kinds of media is a great route to go down. I hope to through my life career in art.

Hive_MinD - Thanks buddy! I hope you do!

Well, I did some digging around, and found my drawings I did of a nude model.
I had this class where we drew a nude model for 6 hours.
We filled an entire sketchbook of newspaper print.
So there were tons of poses.

We did this around the beginning of December.
THIS WAS MY FIRST NUDE MODEL SESSION!!
The first couple were done for practice in my class.
A "dressed rehersal" as we called it.
I have never taken any anatomy classes or anything like that, so... well, here is the result.

anubis713
January 7th, 2007, 07:55 PM
Well... I was bored.
So I got some pictures of me and messed around with them.
And here are the results.
It was fun... I won't lie!

Enjoy!

Hey, thanks for the continual support in my sketchbook endeavors. These studies are looking great. Those hands at the top especialy. Good that you've started to do them, that shit helps soo much ! I think if you picked up an anatomy book and learned a little bit about what's underneath the skin aswell, that would help you too :)

Hey there, thanks for stopping by my sketchbook. I gots to say, I like your sketch book, I'm in love with your studies and kitties. Awesome shading and Good line weights. I would be very loose and step back every once in a while to make sure the drawings can read from a distance. To me, on some of the fantasy and made up stuff seems like you draw very close to the paper, I don't know. I also notice you go over the the same lines multiple times, I would just limit that to like 3 the most. The only time your going to go over the lines multiple times is if your have stuff over lapping with and pop out some stuff from details. Draw lightly and very loose. I don't know if somebody already posted that:shrug:. Keep up the great work, can't wait to see more of your progress :D

Hey Shannon,

That was your first Live Draw? Nice results. Are these recent or from December? Depending on how much time you are given for a pose is a good way to decide how you want to go about with your lines and attention to detail. Drawing on a large sketchbook (bigger than 11x14) is GREAT practice. What you posted has a lot of nice forms.

Forget about facial and hair details for now, focus on the body. Anatomy is the point of live nude drawing right?

Alright people...

The first piece in a WIP. I have never worked with this medium before and I felt like trying it. I really love the texture of the pastel pencil I was using, along with the pastel paper.

Second was for an assignment in my intermediate drawing class. We had to draw from a refrence picture she gave us.

I like all of the anatomy studies that you have got here. They are all good and I can't see any quirks in them. More torso, leg, and arm studies are in order now though, as you'll need to pull them all together sooner than later for the ThunderDome challenge I want to see you in by Summer's Begin.

Like the animal studies/sketches also. The last one is good, but the head is off, so it throws everything else off. I think the neck is too fat and the head in profile is too long...maybe shorten/thin them out and you'll be good.

Horny pussies, what to do.

About the art, those are great lion sketches. I can see them being used in a finished work with motion like that. Cool linework on that still life. You really defined the shapes of the tones. It all seems kind of slanted, did you use plum lines?

That other still has great color. Is that conte crayon. Great detail on the hair, I always get lazy there.

I'd DIE for some scanned stuff! =|

anubis713
February 19th, 2007, 10:23 AM
Matsign - Thanks buddy. Not exactley sure what you mean by plum lines..
About the conte crayon, I think you are talking about the last piece of the woman. If so, your answer is no.
It is actually pastel pencil on pastel paper.
It's really a great medium, and it is fun to work with I think.
You should try it.

Some of the pieces are not shown here. I will try to put them up soon.

So anywhom,

3D is fun stuff. One thing you can do to avoid the tell tale sharp cg edges is to bevel any edge that meets at 90*. It doesn't take much, even the tiniest offset is enough to catch the light and it goes a long way to softening the lines, like on the crate.

FactorZero
March 18th, 2007, 12:09 PM
very nice. the wood texture on the crate looks good.

anubis713
March 18th, 2007, 03:34 PM
Thanks guys, for awhile there I thought nobody liked the new stuff I added.

Extent - Thanks for advice. I will try that next time. The class I did that for is a texturing class, which I really enjoy. I realized that you really notice the textures on everyday things without even realizing you are doing so at the moment. It's pretty incredible how real you can make things look if you just focus the textures as well as the modeling.
Modeling is definitely something I still need to work on.
:meow:

Factor Zero - Thanks bud. It was fun making that crate. Glad to see you stopping by.

Thanks for stopping by my sb. Your animal drawings are definitely your strongest pieces. Keep working on the anatomy/life drawings. The texture on the crate is looking pretty good. Might be nice if it didn't have the same texture on each side. I haven't done any 3D in a while. It's fun, but so time consuming. I'm interested to see where you'll go with the 3D stuff. Keep it up!
