I need some help please!

How can i attach a link to my sketchbook in my signature and how to set that little picture next to your thread title when making thread?

Im new to this and a bit dumb eheh :bashful: !

DanielC

Hey !!
Nice start. But don't forget anatomy. Right now your characters look too simple. Add some interesting details and lines. Make the compositions attractive by adding some backgrounds or anything.

As for the link and thunmbnail:
Link: Looks in you User Cp o nthe top left corner of the page. Look for Edit Signature and in the box copy past the link to your sb (in the adress bar of your browser).
Thumbnail: In your first post of the thread, get in the advanced modify mode, look for an Attachement Manager button and add the image you want... but only one!

There you go =)

To Glupito: Thx eheh.
To DanielC: I totally agree with you! Thank you for observation and for User CP help! :D

I like your concepts. But it seems like lots of your figures are just floating. Try positioning the characters on a ground plane more often, it will help to show you good positions for the legs and feet. Also be mindful of the center of gravity of your characters so they don't look like they might fall over.

My sketchbook is here (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=71080)

Snarfevs

Good start!
Some of your figures seem to have strange proportions despite their solidity. The 'disturbed' pair look like they'd mesh perfectly with 'inquisitor', in fact a lot of these designs look like they would be viable as games workshop concepts.

The last I feel simply begs for a more dramatic angle.

Thx for your rating blaz, it made my day to hear that:)

Regarding your sketchbook, i like your enthusiasm for detail, which may be hindering you of your overall perspective. I mean sometimes your drawings don't gel well with the camera or gravity, that’s why I would see simple blocking out of things, giving you more an overview. This should allow you more control.

Personally every drawing i do, I use the line tool on my PS panel, and make a couple of vanishing points on a different layer, and this helps me greatly. If you’re slightly confused, just come by my sketchbook and ask for me to post a step by step, on my next drawing.

Thx again.

cool stuff man and its a very clean style but lacks some pizazz if you catch my drift.. it needs a rough line put in some action poses and you'll see that a clean style needs some roughening up

Blaz
December 11th, 2006, 04:25 PM
to softocean: ty for the advice, ill try that!
to snarfevs: ty,and yes i know about the proportion : (...
to loneshadow: ty eheh
to cold: im really glad it made your day,ill try to do the blocking thing from now on,i hope it helps ^^
to evxyza92: ty,but i dont really get the "pizazz" and "drift" part :P i agree about the rough thing but problem is when i draw (like Cold said) i really get drawn by the details so the overall drawing lootks "tidy" and not really natural ...
...i cant help my self ...doomed :D

at this age, this kinda quality :o
and it's not a bad thing if you can draw like this!
what's art school like? and what do they teach you there exactly

just keep drawing like you do now, and you've got yourself a fan already :)

i can only repeat the stuff that was already mentioned in the other posts ^^ .....this sketchbook is really a nice start...interesting variety of different concepts..... but you should focus a bit more on the basic shapes of your charakters atm. you seem to like detailing the armory and weaponry a lot :P. try to spend a bit more time on the basic shapes and values and less on lines and details......keep it up :)

pretty good, I like many of the details, and some of the sketches are really nice - for example that of the Nightbringer and Grenth. Sometimes you slip on the line work or/and the anatomy of the characters. Still I like.

charatcers are coming along nicely, good imagination ad form.
one thing that might help is to push the contrast a bit, really make the
tones and forms push and pull to give depth.
keep it up! :D

Hi, good ideas here, i like the first viking specially, and some of the "underground" scifi designs are great.
negative points, try to articulate de limbs of your figures giving diferent angles to each part...(sorry about my english hehehe)
i mean if you draw a leg completelly straight it looks tense and unnatural.
try to give diferent angles to each part of the limbs, it makes the drawing looks more relaxed and natural.
anyway good job :^^:

PD: ty for your post in my sketchbook :D Salute!

Blaz

@Don-key: thank you for the advice...yeah i think deeper shadows/contrast is what i need ^^

hey blaz thanks for visiting my sketchbook, thought i would repay the favour and answer your questions in one go. i do my phtoshop stuff using a touchpad mouse..the ones where you move your finger around the small square to move the cursor, i paint with that not sure what you mean by tablet.hmm and my drawings i use reference for colours and details but the poses usualy just come around by acident btu sometime i copy the poses( neither of my 2 atm are copies)......now your work, i love your attention to detail and your anatomy isnt that bad just a bit basic(lol thats rich from me) but just some bulgin muscles and more ACTION, movement etc would give your work that kick up the backside to make it even better because your designs are sweet. luvin it dude keep it up.

Wow, I see you'll have no problems with the imagination part of creating concept art! Great work! Maybe some more drawings from life, say your friends or family or maybe you could sketch just everyday people too? I guess that would bring a more human element to your characters which would make them more interesting and believable too. Hey, thanks for visiting my sketchbook, too. Us newbies will all improve in no time as long as we keep on practicing. :}

Hey Blaz, some very nice character designs in here! Your PS piece in your last post looks great, although I'm not experienced enough with photoshop to give you a decent crit, I can say though as you said, the trumpet kind of looks a little flat, just touch it up with reflections and correct shading and I'm sure it will look great. I'm afraid I can't really give advice on what to do, maybe check out some PS tutorials on metal shading or something. But everythings looks real good, keep on drawing:D! and thanks for the comment in my Sb :) Oh and you play guild wars (Well I guess so from the designs for it)! Nice! :D

February 12th, 2007, 01:49 PM
awsome stuff man. i really like the linework of the first posts, as u get down and start shading in values i think u lose a bit of the crispness, particularly because of your midrange values. your sketches dont really have pronounced shadows or highlights. in your paints u are defining it a lot more however i think u can still build up those forms a little stronger and push the values further to give your work more presence. gwork though. keep it up

Hey man, awesome, your 16 also. Thanks for the advice.

Those last drawings you posted are pretty sweet, I like the little girl with the skull head, and the colored version of Balthazar. I wish I knew enough to post some good crits, but I don't.. so just keep it up!!

February 13th, 2007, 04:15 AM
The detail on your figures is something to behold! But once u learn how to do life drawing like proper u'll be amazed at how much better those guys and gals look posture wise. U'll be like how the hell did i ever survive without this!?

Something else that im also guilty of not doing is backgrounds and shadow planes on character drawings giving them that 'character stuck in the void' look, i need to work on this also and so i shall. Hope to see more mate! :D

You got some really nice stuff in here with some minor flaws (hands look a little small in some places and some floating characters) but I can see in your last few posts that you're improving. don't get me wrong, you are talented and I'm not really in any position to crit your work since I'm new at this. I really like your style and I see you got good taste in gaming too, love GW :P Anyhow, would really like to see some more soon!

Oh, and yea, I think the admins want people to use the image manager instead of img-tags. Correct me if I'm wrong.

There´s big improovement compared to the first posts. In your first pics your characters had in my opinion a lack of expression, it looked like you were afraid of drawing heads........but seein your last post showed me that you already going in the right direction. Your figures in the last post have character and style and also different face expressions.:rendered:

...Maybe work a little more on the eyes, most characters of youres have the same.. (no pupils and round eyes).

So keep it up, you´re on the way!

Thanks for taking the time and looking at my work. I must say your imagination is overflowing with great ideas! Very cool works. Your attention to detail on some of your works is superb, especially that last post. My favorite has to be this: http://img166.imageshack.us/img166/5944/olyssavw8.jpg

Very clean lines and very nicely portrayed. Now vary the line weights a bit to bring more depth. Any plans to color some of the earlier posts? They all seem to be set up to be colored. I hope you continue to post! Keep up the great work!

Great start, especially at a young age. Keep going with it. Free up your hand when you draw. Forget about details like some people said. I strongly encourage you to pick up some colored pencils, markers, whatever...One thing I learned in art school was to never be too comfortable with a certain medium/approach. You will pick up new techniques and learn more about your technique. later

Blaz, your stuff is very original & you draw really well, I just see that you try to avoid perspective, the concept of your environment is very good but it does need some work on the perspective, I would recommend you the book "Rapid Viz", it explains very good and makes you understand it in a very easy way and without all the technical side of it (which is not bad but is harder to understand right away). Keep posting!

There is another guy named Blaz haha, I though you were him, but he goes by ninjassasin over at cgtalk. He posts over here at CA sometimes.

Now to work. I like your ideas and some of the designs of the characters. You polish and get better that is all. Just do some life drawing; try to get as much time of that as you can. You will begin to see your character designs jumpstart and in about a year your character designs will look more magical. Of course you want to keep drawing and improve year by year though. I am just merely stating that you will have vasts amounts of improvement if you keep drawing. Keep mark making!XD

Hey man i really like that necromancer sketch, i really want to see you finish it though, by adding in the rest of the body. im a big fan of that abstract composition that you have as your avatar, it is raw. But as for that clown, im not so impressed. I think you may have gone too dark in some places...right down to straight black.
I dont know if your into photography at all, but in most good photography (and the same goes for a lot of drawing and painting), the absolute blacks should be saved for only a few very special places, and the absolute whites should be preserved for the super bright reflective highlights. Everything else can be shades of grey but remember to use the pure black wisely, or else the lighting just wont look right. Also, pay really close attention to the edges. The trumpet of your clown is getting too blurry. Those details will come out if you sharpen up your edges.

What i do like is your cleanliness of linework in your first few posts. Those drawings are tight! Way cleaner than i could ever imagine doing right now. Once again, i want to see that necromancer finished, and keep up the good work!

Really nice :) Even though it's all black and white you know how to shade properly ! You draw fat people very well too - something I haven't tried yet. I'm too concentrated on "what is cute and beautiful". I should spend more time on what is... true. :)

Anyway, great sketchbook ! I'll keep an eye on it ;D

hey man great update! alot of nice characters too, one major crit though would be to work more on your shading...it seems alot of the time you are looking at the lighting when shading...but forgetting the form, try to shade in more than one direction...'wrap' the lines 'around' the forms. also remember line weight plays a big role as well...vary them along with the shading and you should see the forms 'pop' out more, lastly watch out for your values more, try to make your dark, mid, and highlight tones more clear :)

just my 2 cents, keep working hard man!

Hey man, been a while... I'm really loving the harlequin in #73! So much progress, so little time...XD

The first chick in #74's head looks a bit small, though. Keep up the great work man, and thanks again for stoppin' by the other day!

Thanks for commenting in my SB :)

Stop ripping your stuff so much...you are quite talented. There is some insanely cool shite in here, especially the stuff at the beginning of this thread. Great details and pencils. I want more! And just what is GW that the redesigns were for?

Definetly makes me study figures more!...in fact im gonna do it right now ...*runs away*
lemme see that! ^^ did you also find this site (www.posemaniacs.com/blog) in my SB? Grrrreat for gestures!

this page (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=150217&stc=1&d=1181253978) looks very nice, especially the bridge is awesome! Maybe you could paint it with some colours digitally? If you do it right it could really be breathtaking. Though I know colour is hard.

Also I really like the lower right scene in this (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=92091&stc=1&d=1171370590).

About the figures, I think they look really good. But sometimes you make the head a bit too small.
I have no other crits.. Just keep it up! ^^

@vervex: Thx,hehe I never got that kind of compliment before!

@paperX: Yes you are right,I think my shading does kill the form...and kinda kils the line weight too! Thanks for the advice!

@OldNoobie: Thx! :D

@iMaiM: Thx,yeah her head does look too small,indeed. :/

@Piranha Clan: Thx,and GW is Guild Wars, a MMORPG game i am playing (unfortunately). And those redesigns were for fan art on some forums.

@Noe: Thank you for the link,it will definitely help! Yeah bridge frame is my fav from that, now I only wish I could paint digitally..actually paint in general!

Good stuff, Blaz! I really like the Scarab Kinng and the Pharoah. Those could both be developed into really cool paintings or sculptures. Your armor designs are great too. You've got the basics down. I would like to see more shading work and smaller details in your drawings. Pester your art teachers about shading techniques and anatomy. If they're worth a damn, then they'll love you for it.

you have a lot of interesting ideas.
i tihnk it would be nice to see soem skeletal or muscle studies from you though. help you strenghten your grasp on anatomy and understanding poses and such.
as for your digital work. one thing to consider would be to try to uhhh.
well instead of just using a darker and darker shade of whatever the base colour is, to introduce a bit more colour, maybe subtley a bit of blue in the shadows, subtley some pink in the cheeks or even some yellows to try and warm the highlinhts. it can jsut make paintings alot more interestign to look at, or give them more lfe.
er, not sure if theis helps. i am NOT th e most articulate person. *coughcough*

Hehe, I must also give thanks for posting in my SB and your crits were right on. You've got excellent linework and there's a lot of progress visible in your SB even though it's small. Keep hacking at it. I like the scetch of the girl in the middle of page 3, also the last one is great.

Earlier on this page you have a painting of a girl - her face is a bit narrow and nose too long. I struggle with the same stuff but it always helps to work with refs which I'm not sure you did in that case. Take care bro and once again thanks for visiting.

heeeeeeeeeeyy man, this is the first time i have been on this site for a while now, lost my artistic mojo :( coming back on your to have a peep, and can only say im just as impresed as ever !:D

if there is one thing i would say its when you use photoshop, the colours are a little saturated and the brush strokes are very visible which break the image up a bit and makes it look scrappy on parts ( yeah I CAN TALK, but maybe you will find a way to solve it unlike my self) some of the colours are very weak as well and especialy in this last one of the girl there is ALOT of white and like on the upper part of her nose it makes the colour very weak and mixes it with the white making it look a bit un realistic-----BUT let that take nothing away from how good your getting, i just think you need a bit stronger colours and too smooth some strokes over a bit, but that EYE is looking very good i must say :). well done your going good keep it up

(by the way your line work is very..................REFRESHING!..its good to come back and see drawing as incredible as yours hehe...THE AWARD FOR ASS PATING GOES TOO.......but seriously u r tht good :D)

yo dude! u REALLY progressed in 1 yer time! i hold on to people like you, i MIGHT as well book so much progress in just 1 year:)

Yes Im still using tablet tough not as often as before I really need to do digital painting more...and as for graphite stick I use is but only in school. Unfortunately professor takes all the drawings afterwards (which I find incredibly stupid) so I cant show em on ConceptArt...well I hope we can get em back at the end of the year. :)

Great characters,
I will have to stop by here later and look at all of this interesting stuff in detail.
One thing that you have that is going to give you an edge is creativity. That is what I'm struggling with. Both creativity and technical skill go hand in hand, neither is as awesome when not in the company of the other.
So keep working both muscles and watch as you become amazing skilled.

Man, I learn more from posting in other peoples sb than when they post in mine. I've gotta get out more, this is good for me.

Thanks for being inspiring.

Hey Blaz, thx for your comment!
I never felt experienced enough to criticize the work of other artits, but I take a try.
Indeed you have progressed since u have started the thread.
I've made the experience, that u increase your skills damn slow, if u draw to much from head. (like me...) I havent found much nudestuff or lifedrawings in your SB. But drawing from life, brings u so much further.

The contrast in your pics could be much stonger so your stuff would look much better. I change the conrast of my pics in PS a little bit.
So, you have pretty kewl ideas for characters. Some look inspired form other artists (happens unconsciously ;D ), but damn cool mixed up.

Cant wait to see your progress for the next year!

Autumnal Dream
October 4th, 2007, 03:18 PM

@chr!z: Hey thx for your time! Indeed you are right about drawing from head, I really have to do more life studies...but drawing more nude people from life is kinda impossible xD!...But u never know...If I go to academy maybe I might live up to see a real act :bashful: ...
...Oh and I tweaked contrast in few drawings too, scanner cant get all pencil rendering nicely unfortunately. And about my characters of course some are inspired both by other artists and other stuff, thats a case with all the artists :).
@Autumnal Dream: Hey thx! Yeah the are result of pure boredom cause in my summer house I dont have computer or anything...just one old tv with 3 channels...So I force my self to draw eheh! The ideas are ofc mine, altough its hard to be original today....my inspiration sources are mostly CA and games! :)

aahg, the more I look at that dude with the sword the more I like him. I'm gonna make him my desktop.

I'm hoping to learn how to do that with my new mentor Ilaekae. We shall see...

For the dude who is washing his car, don't skimp on those legs! It is easier to leave them off, but drawing them will make you better.

The girl kinda looks like her jaw is squashed, and like she's been hitting the booze with that red nose. [sorry]

Older guys are cool, great features on the one on the right. At first I thought his eyes might be out of alignment, but upon closer inspection I realized that they are correct relative to the rest of the face. I think it is the forehead that is not lining up with the rest of the face.

bleah, back to homework ;)

Boo. been looking through your pencils and i dig them. One observation :) in your last pencil stuff your pencil stroke is all at 30 degrees or so. loosening up will help get the value deeper. thats about all, keep at it :D

November 5th, 2007, 03:17 PM
nice still life drawings, you have a clear light source and good range of values. I like your character's shoes but i think a cast shadow would help ground him a little more. Keep up the good work.

@koeifan: Thank you! The character for Battle Royal is entirely done in PhotoShop...with tablet. Simble black brush :teeth:
@Reika: Thank you! And yeah you are right, nice observation...even I didnt know that lol....well ill try to loosen up a bit! 8)
@Howie: Thx, yeah looks awkward without shadow but couldnt bother for a battle royale quickie!
@iMaiM: Thank you once again! ;)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I really should update more often...but cant seem to find things to upload, all my sketches are quite messy and ....messy.

...anyways here is something from few days ago: 2 studies by Holbein and other figure studies from Villpu drawing manual...
...and one more PS quickie: my character for battle royal attacking!

That last character is really fun and interesting, awesome. I wonder if he has something deadly in that baloon? haha. I like how the ears went further back in the first iteration (they look too tall in the last one). Even more loose linework would be cool but the figures still look nice...some good drawings on the last page sir

Hi I been scrolling your SB and I love your pencils and the high contrast stuff! :D
As for krits Im gonna crit this last one.
1st. The pose of the character is the weakest part of your painting, it looks kinda like hes trying not to fall backwards. Try and draw character balanced befor starting to paint.
2nd. The face of the character looks a bit dead. It looks a bit like hes about to charge up a powerful atack but he looks kinda like a grumpy old man. Try and make the yeys say more and also maybe he could do a war-scream. :) just a sugestion.
3rd. The colors look as weak as mine and its something we have to work hard with. :) On thing I do now thats wery helpful is pausing a dvd and painting the screan with eyepicked colors.
Hope to se this evolve to an awsome fiery actack scene! :D
Cheers!

Great stuff, I last looked at an artist who worked wih 2 colours black and white and he can do everything with it, try ones to work with much much shadows with different contrast :s (don't know if you spel that right )
That could give a lot of difference in your art.

I voted for your Chow piece before we formed the SSG! I think you lost some when going from pencils to paint, some of the form and definition got lost. Consider leaving the pencils on a multiply layer for a while longer before painting over them. Might help. I really like the river guardian piece. Very kewl! The Symphony X piece is very nice. Love the subsurface scattering going on with the hands. The cloudy stuff is a bit repetitive to me. Maybe break some of it up here and there? Keep it up! Good sketching!

Hi Blaz. :) I've only looked at the few most recent pages, but even in those you're improving leaps and bounds. You've got a knack for characters, though anatomy can be a little wonky at times... but that's ok, it takes a lot to be able to bs a form and make it look 100% correct. Keep it up, I see good things coming from you

Blaz,

Great improvement over the years. Your character designs and skill with a pencil just get stronger and stronger with each page. Huge jump in #133. I am really enjoying your last few sketchbook pages - great fighting poses and a wicked man-machine meld. As far as the CHOW piece (The Host) goes, wonderful design, but it's a mite dark and it makes me miss the details in the feet and the hands from the initial sketch. There are also many abrupt transitions from dark to light, and because of the contrast it's hard to tell where I should be looking at - the breasts, the legs, the forearms, the face? I really dig your idea of the mouth headdress so I would do something to really pop the contrast there to get our eyes to zero in on it (lighten the teeth framing her face, or use a complementary color like red?), and subsequently bring up the values of the dark patches so the jumps in contrast aren't competing with the really cool designs you've got going elsewhere. Simplify the parts you don't want us to really look at, and spice up the areas where you want us to drool over.

Great work, keep going!

I have major PhotoShop calibration problems. Everything I do in photoshop looks better/different than it looks anywhere else. The stuff i make look too bright and plain outside the photoshop.
Is PS right and my monitor wrong? Or other way around?

Here I took a screenshot of both on my monitor.
A is photoshop, B is image viewer.

Hey there! I have the same problem as you here, and when i wanna save something for web- it's also the same- he gives more colors to the jpg..damn... by the way- nice works :D like them a lot;)

Hello again,
Thank you everybody for comments and crits! :D Sorry I dont have time to reply to each one of you atm. :(

@MarkWinters: That second post of yours was a mistake right? xD You meant to post it in some other SB?

Was quite busy with final high school assignment so I couldnt update.
Here are some new stuff:
1st are quick sketches from the class
2nd and 3rd are just drawings from photo references.

hey blaz!

i think i found the answer- here u have a screenshot from my color management options ( i use ps cs3 ) - u must go to Edit/Color Management .. and here is mine:

http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/6218/colorspsyp1.jpg

and now when i'm opening some jpg's i see that:

http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/5323/colorsps2ca4.jpg

than i choose 3rd option "discard... blebleble" ;)

whatever- let me know, if it works positive - cheers!
