OFDW 020: Dec. 5 - Jan. 5 , 2007
Welcome to the TWENTIETH thread of the Open Figure Drawing Workshop!
This is a Workshop that is being run concurrently on CGTalk's Anatomy Forum:
Open Figure Drawing Workshop - Mixed Masters - 020 (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?p=4050348#post4050348)
You are encouraged to post your work either to this thread or to the thread on CGTalk, or both. PLEASE POST YOUR WORK HERE AND NOT JUST TO YOUR PERSONAL SKETCHBOOK THREADS, AS THIS IS THE PURPOSE OF THE WORKSHOP - TO SEE WORK ALL TOGETHER.
This workshop is open to any medium and any style. Some informal moderation
will be gladly provided ~ however, the purpose of the Workshop is for Artists to
interact with and informally critique one another’s work.
The goal of this Workshop is to COMPLETE one or more FINISHED Master Copies. This is unlike the Anatomy Lesson Series in which the goal is quantity. Here, it's QUALITY of one or two finished pieces.

I started on mine, but I think I'm doing it over. The proportions seem weird, like the legs are too short. Also the chest is a bit too diagonal I think :P

Hi Marleen,
Great to see your work! :) Please feel free to rework your pieces as you feel is necessary - a great way is to take tracing paper and to redraw the areas you feel need adjustment - bear in mind that the point of a drawing is far less to create a perfect drawing than it is to practice, and as such, tracing over and refining a piece is part of a process of learning to draw accurately that takes a long time. I hope you'll resketch and continue to refine the areas you feel are weakest. Looking forward to more posts. :)
Also, a really great book / method you might want to check out is that of Anthony Ryder:
http://www.tonyryder.com/a-book.htm
This is a great book which I have - it teaches you to mark out the figure in terms of angles first and evaluating the negative space as you go. I really recommend it! But the number one thing of course is practice.
EDIT: Diego, I look forward to your participation! :)

December 5th, 2006, 09:36 PM
Hi Twon,
Good to see you posting. :) What I might recommend is trying this in pencil. Take your time - slow down, judge proportions, and think about the lines as you lay them down. Try thinking of this as drawing first, and painting second. Also I recommend killing the white background immediately by laying down a neutral bkgrd - gray, tan, etc. - as all values are relative, and you will find that white makes everything look too dark in comparison.
You may find the shading tutorials linked here useful:
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=403198
Check out the work that was done for the shading workshop here:
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=349444
Really focus on values - that's the key to tying everything together in a painting or drawing. :)
Cheers,
-Rebeccak

Some nice stuff so far. I started mine at work i used a grid to keep my copy going to far astray unfortunately i used a biro for the grid so i don't know if i should just use what i have and paint over it or do a trace of my picture and do a full pencil tonal study before painting it. But i think a full tonal pic is a bit of a overkill if I am going to paint it on the P.C. The pic below is'nt correct but more of a guide and i will hopefully fix whats off in the finaly piece.

Thx for the suggestions Rebecca. I started with a dark brown background on this one and changed my approach a little. The colors went in a bad direction for me like 2/3 of the way through but I had no idea how to get things back on track.

Rebbeca nice thread..although is my personal opinion that you should be posting drawings of masters instead of paintings.. for before painting one needs to learn line.. A drawing also will help more because you are being taught what to use as lines and how to.. paintings are much much harder to copy, if not it would be just a superficial copy ,although everything helps

Twon,
Good to see your work here - I hope you don't mind, I made a few demos which I hope are helpful. :)
One thing that can be enormously useful when digitally painting is zooming way out on both your reference image and your own image. This helps you to see the major areas of light and dark and the major shapes and forms. The way to paint is from large to small, and from dark to light.
Here's a screenshot to illustrate what I mean. When zoomed out this far, I can easily see my mistakes in comparison to the original and can easily correct them at a distance without worrying too much about the details. You want to be sure to get the biggest areas right first before detailing your image any further. I find that I work zoomed out for the majority of the time when I've first started an image, and alternately zoom out / in frequently for the duration of the rest of the painting.
http://anatomy.cgnetworks.com/OFDW%20020/Twon-Smith_screenshot.jpg
Also, there are some key principles which I hope these images help to demonstrate:
When first learning digital painting, it can be tremendously useful to work in grayscale. You can put both your image and reference in grayscale mode. I recommend creating 4 swatches: white, light gray, mid gray, and black. Using your brush, hit the alt key and your brush will temporarily turn into the eyedropper tool, and you can select any color or value from your canvas / swatches by hovering over the canvas while holding down the alt key. Release the alt key, and your brush will return to the brush tool.

Ulver, that is a beautiful piece! Do you plan to paint as well? I'd love to see more of your work here. :)
Mitze, that's a great start!
the_allejo05, that's a good point, but people are free to both draw and paint for these Workshops, depending on their level. :)
Please bear in mind that I'm not 'teaching' this Workshop, I'm here to learn as much or more than everyone else. Everyone is free to offer advice, tutorials, step by steps, and feedback - whatever you feel is useful and whatever you have to contribute here is very much encouraged!
I've been working on the Ingres / blue dress piece, here is where I've gotten so far - everything is just roughed in, and has lots of refining stages to go:

Hey Rebbeca, been waiting for the next MC workshop. I am definately in. Just need to print out and set up my work (basically, sitting on bed)area.
Will try one drawing, one oil, one digital master copy. Let's see how far I git.
Uziel Nice start. That's one of my chosen masterworks as well. I think age has to do with a minimal
rendering of planes on her face. The plane transitions and most edges are super soft. If you look at the black and white pic, you don't see plane changes on her far cheek at all. Most of the transitions are with color temperature. In any case, I hope mine will have as good a start as yours.

Finally finished work so i can now start this. This is a small ways through my first pass over it. I don't get how you colour it do you use layers ie. colour, overlay?
Or do you just paint over it in colour? If you paint over it in colour won't it block out the greyscale and then what was the point of doing a tonal version first? Excuse my ignorance i just always go straight in with the colour and don't know how to paint over a tonal drawing.
Very nice sketch DannySketch

Hi guys,
It's good to see more contributions here. :) I'm going to be scarce for the next few days due to the fact that I have to hang my thesis show - but please continue to post your work and to provide one another with comments and constructive critique.
Mitze, good to have you join us, and thank you for the compliment. :) Nice start to this! Regarding grayscale to color painting methods, check out Steven Stahlberg's excellent painting tutorial here:
http://www.androidblues.com/JealousyStepbystep/jealousystep.html
DannySketch, that is looking really good so far - keep working on this! I have done many copies of the same master work, and each time, I get something new out of it. You may find yourself revisiting certain master works to copy, there is nothing wrong with that. Also, if you find that you are having a problem drawing a certain area, feel free to draw that area larger / independently on a separate page in order to better understand it's form. Quite often there are certain areas for artists that are harder to understand than others, and the best way to understand them better is to study them further.
Looking forward to seeing more of your and everyone's work. :)
Cheers,

Heheh, thanks. It's 'pretty' close to the original, I'm happy with the results don't get me wrong. But I'm trying to tighten up the process, the visualization. Notice in the GIF that I had to stretch everything out horizontally? How am I supposed to do that on canvas ... ? hehe.
Added just a JPEG up there as I noticed it was annoying to wait 20 odd seconds to see the end.

Here is my first try on the subject. Soon i might start painting. One thing have been hammering in my mind tough... Do you guys think it´s going to be a major trouble the fact that i´ll work on different medium (tempera gouache instead of oils) and a probably different size (not taller than an A4 paper)?

Yes Idiot Apathy, you´re totally right...
Well, just after i posted the sketch above, i went to drawn this one i´m showing now. I had the paper streched on a piece of wood and decided to take it of to scan and them stretch it again, so i already painted on it for about 6 or 7 hours non-stop and i´m going to sleep (it´s 3:25 am here in Brazil...). Tomorrow i´ll try to finish it to show here, cause i don´t have a camera and i won´t take it off the wood to scan the progress, hehe....

Wow, great thread! I saw the link in IA's sketchbook and decided to try this out.
Quick comment, I'll try and do more later- (Warning: I may or may not know what I'm talking about.)
piratemasque - Looking good, but the eyes have a few problems. First of all, eyes are almost never pure white. Also, see how in the original, her eyes are slightly more closed than yours. I think it would help if you dropped your top eyelids a tad. There are also a few unnecessary edges in the nose.
#14 WIP- Fairly happy with this one, but the face is off and I still want to tighten up the rendering a little.

Hey Rebecca, I forgot I could post here too.
The drape on your piece is quite spectacular.
OldNoobie As I said B4, nice and classy drawing of this painting.
Ian L Really nice and solid work. The face and beard have such a nice touch in your seperation of light and dark.
Pawlack Good job. I would say that a small help for centering the point of the upper lip is to line up the center of forehead, nostrils and center of mouth. Draw a line on a another layer to see where this is. It helps to line up features on a grid sometimes.
piratemasque Good job. Your proportions are pretty good. Along with the good feedback, I think what would also help is to soften the transitions on her cheeks. The value changes are very subtle because there is no hard light. If you squint at the original, you'll see that the turning of the form is most soft. The area around her nose can be lighter. In any case you have a pretty good start.
ulver Good value study on the Titan.
Cup of Joe Forms have weight, keep on going.
GriNGoLoCo Good start.......Nice swirly head...........
Vishaka Think you have a nice start. Once you add some higher lights to widen the contrast it won't feel "muddy". Nice job on the head.
Here's my fnished piece: Lord Leighton's Clytemnestra i had already posted at CGTalk, but forgot the OFDW was running here too. Lay-in and finish in Photoshop. Did a direct painting using a hard round and opacity pressure sensitive brush. Color was eyeballed. As I want to learn to see the color accurately I didn't want to dip the dropper onto the original image color ,as I have done in the past. Instead, I built color in 50% - 100% transparent strokes still controlling opacity by pressure. Used a seperate layer as I worked on each element. e.g. face and chest, hair, clothing. Am learning to control color, value transitions by variable pressure strokes.
This was a thoroughly enjoyable and big learning experience.

I decided after some first strokes to add some limitations just get this more like a tradicional way.So one of them was to use just one layer, but i used 2 after the 2nd image above and the other was to just use the round brush, working only with Hardness,Size Jitter ajusted to Pen pressure,Opacity Jitter ajusted to Pen pressure,Smothing selected and Opacity.(i´m using Photoshop)
I´m still working on it..

Thank you so much for this rebeccak, I learned a ton. Not only about personal workflow, but how weak my observation skills are, and how subtle tonal variation can be to make a large impact.
Also, thanks to IdiotApathy for showing me the thread.
I ended up having to do a bit of gridding on the face, because I was having difficulties. It's funny how nice my copy looks until it's sitting next to the original :P
http://www.texahol.com/images/ofdw001.jpg
EDIT: here's my progress gif http://www.texahol.com/images/ofdw1.gif I wish I had taken more progress shots. But this really shows how horrible the initial stages were. I ended up spending somewhere around 12 hours on the image total. I think I worked too big, especially considering I have a 12.1 inch monitor :P Also, I started with poor observations, which just made more work for me in the end :<

GriNGoLoCo,
Great to see your WIP! :) If I may make a suggestion, I would recommend reevaluating the relative size of the legs and arms as compared to the torso. I would also suggest graying down the face a bit since you are running out of room in the light values - remember to reserve your lightest lights and darkest darks for very selective areas of your painting. A lot of the time when I start to go too light, I will throw a quick mid gray layer either over the entire painting or over the area that needs dulling down - then I'll either erase out using a mask to get my lights back at a more selective level or build up additively with light grays to reestablish my lights. I find that I do this quite often. :) We tend to think of 'light' areas as really, really light, whereas if you take a look at an image in grayscale, you will see that a lot of the light areas actually fall in the midtone range, with only a few small bright areas of highlight.
Hope this helps! :)

Hi JustinBeckett, great to see you over here as well! :)
Thanks for telling me that you participated in the OFDWs over on CGTalk - here's the thread you mentioned:
SPOTLIGHT: BEST of OFDW 018 (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=379254)
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=379254
I think maybe the reason you couldn't find the thread is because the SPOTLIGHT forum is closed for posting, so it only gets updated once a Workshop concludes - to see all threads ever created, go to the bottom of the SPOTLIGHT: Best of the Artistic Anatomy and Figurative Art Forum (http://forums.cgsociety.org/forumdisplay.php?f=198) (or of any forum)
and where it says:

That way you can see all threads that have ever been posted in that forum, and not just the once that have been updated in the last 30 days, which is the forum default. Hope that helps! :)

idiotapathy, that's actually not a great figure to study for the head. The arm looks nice, but the head [on the original] isn't very good IMO. the ear is far too small, the back of the neck/head is off, and those and mouth seem to be on a different plane than the eyes, and the forehead is really small....to mention a few things that I see right off. Good luck though, if you pick it back up.

invinciblewombat, this is a very nice start - I would encourage you to try this or another piece in Grayscale, I think that you would be amazed at how much subtlety there is in the tones of this and all of the master works here - as a test, try grayscaling a version of the reference to see the amazing range of values. I recommend then either adding more subtlety into the tones of your existing piece, or trying a grayscale piece - you will learn a tremendous amount! :)

There is some really nice artwork appearing here now.
AztcFireFlower: Thanks for the feedback and I'm glad you like it so far, I really like what you had done it's beautifully rendered and very accurate. I just wish I could get better at using colour ... maybe in 2007 !!.
Ivo: Nice work it's good to see the WIP's.
zhay13: I love your sketches, very impressive.
Justin: I like how it's coming along so far .. it maybe an idea to add a bit more red/brown into the mix especially around face. I wish I had used the grid as well as I've run into some problems with my piece here and there.

Neptune has become a popular guy hasn't he. Every one is turning out great work.
Katfay - Cool rendering. Something about the way his forward arm connects is bothering me. Maybe recheck that.
Rebeccack - Thanks for all the resources I'll try to find time to look through all that but I have a slow internet connection so it'll take a while.
Iwombat - Good job on the hair. It looks like the dress could use more work though.
I didn't like my first try to I'm going digital. I'm in the early stages, hopefully I will finish in time. Its amazing how subtle the contours are. It makes it hard to draw. I tried using the opposite curves rebeccack was talking about but it's not coming easy. Just posting it I can see a bunch of things I need to change.

thanks for the pointers rebeccak! I decided to leave the anatomy one aside because I was too lazy to redraw the entire body, but you're suggestion on putting a layer of gray over the entire image was top notch. it definitely improved the overall grayscale usage. now here is my finished piece (and an animation progress gif).. in the end I just pasted the head from the original, cause it was too difficult and small to draw... hope I don't get expelled or anything...

the next one to do is the Ingres Self Portrait.. number 6 in the list I believe.

Announcement:
I'm not in the habit of extending the OFDW deadlines, but due to the holidays I've extending the final date for this OFDW til the end of (your timezone) day, Jan. 10 - that gives everyone 5 extra days to work on their pieces.
I frankly didn't touch Photoshop during the Holidays (I needed a break!) so I hope everyone is okay with this deadline extension.
So:
This OFDW 020 officially concludes at the end of the day on Jan. 10th.
Happy New Year everyone! Please keep posting! :)

I did another. I had a bit of frustrations on this one. The "high res" copy still wasn't quite enough. When I went in for details on parts it came to smooshing pixels, which was not what I wanted. So I tried to get the gist of everything. This time I didn't use any gridding or value picking like I did in the last one. This also went much smoother, and I found myself able to make better choices the first time. Much quicker study.

I hope I didn't breach rules too gravely by deciding to focus only on a detail, i.e. the head of piece number 06 - Ingres selfportrait, although I admit that doing it in whole is a very good composition exercise, my hat goes down to all of you who painstakingly marked your drawings with gridlines. The main reason I did just head was that I wanted to do it in traditional media, and the closest thing to the real media used by Ingres (oil, it appears) I had was acrylic. For that, I used a beautiful 165 lbs paper made for work with this particular medium, but it was too small to use it for the whole painting: its size was merely 23cm x 32cm. However, it was just the right size for the head, so I decided to do it this way. Here is a finished piece (large picture) plus some step-to-step. Please give me your crits! :)

Thank you so much, Miljenko! I set myself a time limit of one day for the painting since I had other duties…You mentioned that oils take a long time to dry; well, it depends if you work thick or thin, and what kind of painting medium you use. I work quite thin, so it’s basically dry in a day or two. (Technically, it’s still drying for a few months.) Actually, I think oils are easier to use than acrylics in that regard, since you can still play with the picture while its wet. But I’m biased: for me, nothing replaces the vibrancy of oil colour!!
I liked your initial sketch of the Ingres self-portrait best, with those dark eyes staring evenly out of their sockets. (I thought there was something funny going on with the ear, but then I saw the original…I guess Ingres just had funny ears…lol) I’m wondering why you chose to work on paper; do you prefer it to canvas? Doesn’t the paper absorb the paint?
Similar comment for Destinatus: I like the second to last version of Clytemnestra better than the last. There’s something amazing about the light glowing off her face.
Rebeccak, you’ve got so much patience…don’t worry about those pearls…I didn’t dare undertake a complicated piece like that! My hat is off to those who did.

i found this thread late (i started yesterday morning after finishing a calendar project entry, a Thunderdome piece, and a ChOW attempt in the last month), hope it's OK to post this close to closing. the master image (#15) intrigued me because of its fairly extreme foreshortening, the unusual tonal range of the dark marble's surfaces, and the variety of textures. i wanted to make sure during the painting (Photoshop, using Brush & Smudge tools mainly) that i was modeling the forms as i perceived them rather than just copying the patterns of light & shadow from the photo. the progress shots start with a comparison of the master image and my very quick (and rather inaccurate) gridded sketch, intended only as a rough guideline for initial placment of painted strokes. it was scanned to match the master image size, and both were gridded with guidelines for side-by-side accuracy checks as the painting progressed.

active acidophilus, you did a lovely study - I really commend your using oils! I hope that you will participate in a future OFDW. :)
masque, I think that looks really good, but the main thing I would recommend is that you not color sample from the reference - the main purpose of the exercise / Workshop is to be able to judge value relationships for yourself - so that when you create your own work from reference or life, you can better see / judge value relationships to create better artwork. :)
Great sketchbook btw!

all the values used were created by me. the only sampling i did was a single mid-tone from the BG, which i modified in the values slider to create a BG grad to work against (see prog 2). all other tones were mixed or blended, eyeballed from the photo. i liked the pale sepia tint of the original so decided to keep it, as it seemed warmer than a straight greyscale treatment and more suitable for the subject.

no offense taken, and you make a good point about sampling. you got me to wondering just how close my tonal range was to the original so i did side-by-side histograms -- mine's flatter in the highlights and also a little in the shadows. visually i can also see a bit more magenta in mine, something i hadn't noticed while working on it, 'cause i guess i was focused so tight on the tonal rendering.

a detail, about 2/3 working size:

i know i have some proportional issues in the bare shoulder & head, slightly oversize, and i'm still working at the extremes of the tonal range (max highlight and shadow) on the figure so some parts are a little flat still.
i like the classic contraposto of this painting's subject, and the very high-key lighting, which makes for extremely subtle values shifts. i had to smile -- she looks so demure at first glance, but when you get up close to her face she seems to have faint, impish, rather knowing smirk. hope i can preserve that.

active acidophilus: Thanks on your remarks! The paper is just perfect, cuz its a SPECIAL PAPER TO USE WITH acrylics, you dig? :dur: Its a beautiful 165 lb paper that doesn't wrinkle at all: Just a light sketch with a charcoal, and then you apply as many paint-overs as you want! Canvas? Well, I bougth that convenient pre-gessoed canvas, but I am keeping it for something special, maybe a nice little composition of, say, apples, a vase, etc. Never painted on canvas, I guess acrylics will do nicely on canvas, huh? As for the flair and vibrancy: You know, when you use that gloss with acrylics, it sorta resembles that oily brilliance, but I'm no expert! :^^:

I think that these are my finals - at least to meet the deadline. I have to admit that this was one of the most challenging paintings I've worked on - it's incredible to me how Ingres did this in oils - I can't begin to approach the level or finesse of detail in his work, even with the luxury of digital and Ctrl + Z - I barely have the grayscale worked out, and just the beginning of color. I truly tip my hat.

I just wanted to let you guys know that I have compiled the following thread for this Workshop on CGTalk:
SPOTLIGHT: BEST of OFDW 020 (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?threadid=450223)
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?threadid=450223
I've included the best work from both OFDW 020 Workshops here on ConceptArt.org and on CGSociety.org - and I've plugged the thread, so it should be getting a lot of attention.
Thank you to everyone for participating! :)

Thank you for this great workshop :)
Unfortunately my exams and other work for school killed whole my free time including Christmas holidays :(. I hope next time I'll be more lucky ;)
