I thought it would be good to have a separate category for awards/scholarships for those still in high school (or middle school!).

Here's something to start out with:

Hi rblitz7, it's possible that the deadline has passed for this year.
I'm having trouble finding out because it seems they give you more information after you sign up.
Did you see anywhere they listed the deadlines?

I assume you can apply next year if it so happens that the deadline passed this year already.
Let me know what you find out.

Registration for scholastics shouldn't be closed yet; I just registered another piece last night. Maybe it's closed for portfolio, though... I don't know.

At any rate, that whole site has been really touchy the past week or so.

And you do need to download those submission forms. You're supposed to tape two copies of each on the back of your artwork. :) There's also another tag you need for the front of it that's different from those submission forms.

NFAA's scholarship competition has already passed for this year (2006. The cutoff was November 1st), but the Scholastic Art Awards competition is still open...I think.

I'm pretty sure the Scholastics is still open, the deadline for visual arts (at least individual work) is sometime in January (I hope... meep!). They keep sending me an email reminding me to finish the registration process.

I entered the NFAA competition, but I didn't place. Got a 7/10. :P

Here's a fun scholarship contest... you get to draw ducks!! (for US state residents)

Age limit is Senior standing in high school, or 18 years. You can win money from your state and if you place best in show in your state you can go on to earn possibly thousands of dollars. I won 50 bucks and a duck dvd and a stamp. x3

"Students in Grades 9 through 12 are invited to interpret our theme 'You Can Make A Difference' in an original poster."

Rules for this one are on the website and the deadline is Jan. 19, 2007, so you still have some time!

2007 PENNIES FOR ART SCHOLARSHIP (http://www.gfwcma.org/id60.html) of up to $800

Applicant must attend a Massachusetts high school and must submit a letter of endorsement from the president of the sponsoring GFWC of Massachusetts club in the community of legal residence, a recommendation from high school art teacher, a letter stating goals, and portfolio of three examples of original work. SASE required.
The award is for tuition only and will be sent directly to the recipient’s college.

All materials must be received no later than February 1, 2007.

American Spirit Publishing Portrait of America Scholarship Contest (http://www.bestkeptsecretsforwinning.com/Portrait2006.php)

Original photograph or artwork, which represents your Portrait of America.
Must be a U.S. citizen
Must be enrolled in high school for the 2005-2006 school year: public, private, or home school are all acceptable

Note: The website says "The winner will receive a $500 cash prize that they may use however they wish. We suggest you save or invest it to help pay for college, but it's up to you."
So this means that you don't have to be accepted into an accredited college to apply for this scholarship. You can use the money any way you wish, which is good for those of you thinking of attending an atelier.

Edit: I hope they are doing it again this year? I am having trouble finding current info on the website.

It has closed for this year, but you can probably start getting ready for next year.

The NFAA youngARTS registration is now OPEN for the 2007-2008 school year. Registration before June 1 is $10 cheaper per catagory.

Huh, I don't remember having trouble doing so. It should be xxx-xxx-xxxx, 10 digits of area code + phone number. I don't remember if I put in dashes, so maybe it was just xxxxxxxxxx

I got it to work after many trial and tribulation, I hate it when I make things super complicated x_x

Hello, I applied on line for a government grant. The next day they called me to tell that I was approved. I had to print out and sign a contract and send it with a cashier’s check, for the grant writing fee, via express mail. Then I was told by them that I would receive a packet in the mail in about a month. But never get that. Can you tell me what is going on with me? Thanks a lot.

It was probably a scam. You shouldn't need to pay a fee to recieve aid. Alternately, could just be buried in bureaucracy.
