I recently came across this artist (http://www.soanala.com/) from http://www.cgsociety.org/.
Her work is the most photorealistic, as well as artisic I have yet encountered in 3D work. Have you seen its equal? What do you think?
TheDirtSyndicate
November 30th, 2006, 07:26 PM
first off, her stuff isn't photorealistic at all. i've seen better than equal... in fact, i wouldn't even consider her to be in my top 100 list of 3d artists. (and after taking another look, i'd even go so far as to say this person sucks. they're taking basic poser models and doing lame texture jobs on them, make the ears into elf ears and boom they're done. fucking lame.)
you can spend 10 minutes on cgsociety and find 3d artist better than this.
hell, ON THE FRONT PAGE there are 9 3d artists that blow this person away.

nope. still dont put her there.
her shit LOOKS like its a poser model even if she didn't use poser.
lame hair, lame textures, lame modeling, etc.
i dont get it, how the fuck can people like this stuff? its terrible. i saw better modelling, texturing, and more creative stuff come out of the people that i went to school with back in '99.
if she had presented this stuff to our instructors, they would have just patted her head and said "thats nice dear, thats nice" and moved on.
how can you say this stuff is CREATIVE?!?! its a fucking regurgitation of the same shit i see every fucking day! its LAME. theres NOTHING unique about it.
seriously, this is the best thing she has on her site:

oooohh, a fairy!!! so fucking original. bad pose, bad lighting, terrible texturing, bad modeling, and then she added a bunch of ugly grain to hide how shitty eveyrthing looks.
she must be hot. yeah, she must have big titties and a pretty face. otherwise why would people turn off their brains for this shit? oh! i know, maybe because her fans are LOTR fans that want to see elves and fairys half naked!

lol dont be so harch complete2, but i have to agree with you, it does not look that good really, but people sometimes get famous because of something and then they gain more fame and fans by their name only, they can post a picture of a rendered 3d ball and people turn like "WOW tahts amazing!111"
in short, ye, not that good really, it looks pretty but its the same time over and over

oh, and i dont do 3d.
i do motion graphics, web design, print design, photography, and illustration for a living. i know the basics of max, cinema4d, maya, and lightwave, and am currently delving deep into zbrush and mudbox.
i could spend 10 minutes in zbrush and create something more original and especially more realistic than this girls work. but thats beside the point.
the point is, she's not that great. in fact, i think she sucks, especially when there are people out there (not me) who could fart of their computer and create a better model, fully textured and photo real.

If you wanted to show off her "realism" you probably should have posted to things like the thread of her trying to make the actress instead of her website. The art in her gallery is kind of cute in a girly Lisa Frank* type way, but none of it shows realism in any shape or fashion. Thus you're going to get people screamng at you for bad eyes or bad taste when perhaps you meant her more recent work.
*edit: And that's actually a compliment from me, I happened to be a girly-girl who liked Lisa Frank when I was in middle school!

I wouln't say her stuff is photo real. On the contrary the stuff is very stylized. And i can totally tell that its done by someone asian. A great majority of artist over seas have similiar art styles which is cool. If that's your thing. For more photo real stuff i would say check this cat out.

I registered here JUST so i could comment on this thred.
I have to agree with Complete 2 here, as this is by far NOT the best realistic modeling I have ever seen.
to say REALISITIC, means you could look at it and mistaken it to be a Photograph of a REAL person.
I could never do that with any of the models on the website provided in the origional post.
they are all extreemly fantasy based, and the acutall "people" in them are easily looked at as digital, un realistic people.
like someone said, this is a great example of some of the realistic stuff out there today.
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=399499
and the fact that this is REALISTIC, but not ARTISTIC is bullshit in my opinon. note I said OPINION.
to do anytype of ART, which THAT is, takes an ARTIST, which in my book makes it artistic.
the placement of hair, the sculpting, the paint work, that all is artistic and only an artist can do it.
thats like saying some avrage joe could do realistic models, but not artistic models.
which is exactly what that sounds like.
doing REALISTIC models is the most difficult thing to do in the art world....in both physical and CG.
it takes the most artistic tallent to do. thats why you dont see it much, its EXTREEMLY difficult. to take everything into thought.....sculpture, molds, hair and paint work,.......and its very similar in the CG world.....sculpting and textureing, painting, hair......eyes...etc..etc....
these things would all have to look like they do in REAL people...
your knowledge of form and anatomy has to be the best, you have to have an eye to see form.
THAT all takes artistic talent. it takes a true artist.
so EVERYTHING that is created, is artistic.
just because there FANTASY, dose not make them artistic in the least.....its the fact that an artist CREATED them is what makes it artistic.
and people asking to see other peoples work to compare etc....
seeing these things dose not mean you have to be better of an artist.
it means you have that eye.
another reason why Human realistic things are just so difficult to do is because EVERYONE who has eyes knows what a human looks like. its the most familure form to the eye, so you are going to be abel to see flaws in models that do not look realistic because they can tell...its just not what they see when walking down the street.
and for the record here....I'm not bashing the girl who did the models in the origional post. because I have No reason to.
they are GOOD models, great models.
but they are not photo realistic models.

@complete2
reiv is famous ;)
it`s a little bit sad for soanala who - and i`m sure - never wants a comparison like that.
and it`s easy to say that beauties are simple to do in 3d - that`s a prejudice. the problem with the female form is the softness of shapes. if you`ve one ugly or hard looking part on her, you destroi all of her beauty. it`s an equal prejudice like realistic stuff isn`t art. try to do it and i swear the first three times you have a male looking model instead a beauty queen ;o)
i think we should quit this. discussions about taste are mostly senseless and as i said, it`s not fair for soanala.

Well...thanks for the rousing debate. Leave it to me to inadvertantly start a rousing debate!
I was interested to get your feedback on how you would rate this artist with others, and I got that...and more! Complete2's candor comes across in all his posts, so I take no offense here.
I think the artist in question is defended in that she does not use Poser. Had she done so, I would have labeled her a Poser myself!
I enjoyed seeing the work of REIV here, and also agree that some of the other works outdo Soa Lee on realism. Some of the works I still like by her include those that have a painted style, inspired by classic artists. While some of the other artists dutifully duplicate an actor's face, they have not obtained that sense of paint, or the sense of style that REIV brings to bear.
Thanks so much for the exploration and your insights. I must agree with Take2 here, and quit further debate.

Most of your posts are hostile.
Don't you think sayng "she sucks", isn't hostile?
You sure you are an adult?
Because adults usually can calm themselves down before posting stuff that you post.
First of all, you are totally entitled to your opinion, but sayng "she sucks", multiple times and trying to make everybody hate her work,
is idiotic and makes you seem like a geek who'se just jealous.
Soanalas work or style is not new, but neither is anybodys on this site.
I've already seen tons of 2d works with girls that have blood coming out of they'r mouths, or "scary" monsters with big teeth,
that are not new in anyway.
Everything that has been done once, has been re-done by other people millions of times, and we all know it.
If you want original, go see art of the 1700-1900 century and talk again.
Personally, I've never thought of Soanalas art as being realism.
Is realism having looks that no one has in real life? No.
Is realism a person that has long ears? No.
Guys, seriously. She is not doing realism, SHE IS DOING FANTASY.
Complete, you would probably bash off kjun/bzo aswell, wouldn't you?
http://www.kjun.org/
Oh, and about the poser comment you made...
People who use poser are not all idiots and wankers who want to make porn.
There are a lot of users using that program, that make own clothes, hair, textures and everything themselves + achieve amazing results when it comes to REAL realism. So before you bash an entire community of users that use that program, check before you do so.
(mixing up 3dsmax results with poser shows how little you know about 3d, btw. :)

No offence to you, complete2, I haven't read the last few comments here, but I have to agree with the guy who said that you need to chill and stop acting like a twat. What is wrong with saying what you've said in a friendly way? Trust me, it could've been done and people would have gotten your point just fine. Just avoiding the "sucks" would have done wonders.
It is one thing being angry when good artists are not given credit, it's an alltogether different thing to rant and lash out at those who care for the work of an artist that is not, objectivly, as technically proficient or knowledgable as another. You could have just told the guy/girl who started this thread that the work wasn't all that realistic, and pointed out an example or two of work that was better. It's better to help people discover great art, than to bash them for their views.
