Hey guys...I'm just sad.. I mean, this T-Dome is coming to an end and we've all grown as close as family here. (me being the father....and come to think of it, the mother too) A family that we all love to hate and now that it's coming to an end it brings tears to both my glass eyes. I'm just an emotionally high strung little egotist deep down....*sobs*

Hey WAHOOO!! I just reached 100 posts!! WAOOOWW yeh, man! party!

Hey Sve, You asked for some crits, so i'll do my best to give them. First I want to say I'm not great at critiquing art, because I think everyone sees the pictures differntly, so I supposed it matters what your intentions are with the picture, if its to please yourself then you could be satisfied with it, if it is to please others, then I suppose you would want to paint it up to the standards that everyone else is trying to obtain at the time, and I am not quite too sure what those standards are but I have an Idea.
SO I'll say that some anatomical clothing type of "errors" would be his interior robe, the arch at the bottom of the interoir robe almost makes him look hollow, but you could argue that that part of his body is infact hollow because his legs are spread out, but it just seems like that robe should not be looking hollow like that because of the look that he is short of a chubby fellow.
I don't like the colors of the boots that much, but thats just a personal thing,
I think if you wanted to "improve" your piece, you could have zoomed in some more and continued to "render and blend" the piece more and add some more detail. I think that the belt looks sort of unfinnished, if that is a belt, I can't really tell, it is the part on his body that is under his hands.
I think that there are too many colors over all in it, I can kinda guess what the look you were going for was with the colors, but overall the image looks a little saturated, which once again is only a personal opinion, because im sure you can find 10,000 other people that don't think it is too saturated.

I also think some more contrast would have made him look a little more realistic or believable, not necissarily realistic , but believablility is what you most likly want to obtain with this type of portrait art.
I like the background alot, it really adds some contrast to the character and makes him pop out a little. I think for clothing his sleaves are very well done, I like the colors and the detail, It looks like silk.

I don't like the fur around his neck very much, it looks sort of flat, I think this is one of the areas that could use some more shadows and contrast to make it look more 3dimensional or believable lighting. The material on the otter robe is very well done, tons of detail there, but I think that the shadow areas are off in color, I'm not too sure how to go into detail about this, but im sure there is some kind of color theory explination for shadow colors, but those greens in the shadow areas kinda blend in as the same color of the regular greens on the robe.

Now that I look at the whole picture more and more I think im going to take back that clothing comment about the arch of the interior robe, im trying to picture it the opposite way . "the arch" and I don't think that would look right like that, I think it works well.

Ok Overall I think its a very great image, the face is done wonderfully, a great expression, This is one of my favorites, the colors are great, It looks like you put in some good time and effort with this and Im sure you learned alot, just like I normally do with each new image I spend some time with.

I think overall for improvement , I think if you spent about 10 more hours on this piece even if half the time was thinking about it and looking at it, you could find ways to improve it yourself. I find the best way for me to improve a piece when I call it finnished, is to come back later, mabee a few hours or a few days, and the go back at it and just find little things to keep working on, and after more hours work ,I look at it and I am happy that did some more work to it. If you just spend the time looking closely you can normally find tons of things to fix for yourself.
But like I said, Great piece!
Hope anything I said makes sense or helps you someway.

Take care,

Joe.

Oh, Thank you so much, Mr-Joe. That's wonderful critiques and all this is true. That's what I was struggling from beginning, no volume under the robe and an overloaded with details image. It is still there. He stands like he is swinging on his heels. Pose and anatomy are bad. Arm foreshortening is wrong and many, many more mistakes.
Agree about the fur collar and sloppy work in renedering. Image was changed very many times. I lost track a bit and didn't correct many things. I will try to paint differently from now on. that's what I learned. I will think about pose more and then will paint, improvising with painting.

Thank you so much, I'm very happy you gave me your thoughts and they are right to the point.

I will return you favor, if you prefer today or together with other crits.

A Latin text describes him as fratris interfector (brother-slayer), and it is entirely conceivable that the "blood" component of his cognomen refers to his propensity for fratricide."

"Pili-kaaiea
In Hawaiian mythology, Pili-kaaiea (or Pili-auau) is a chief, called a 'grandchild' of Lana-ka-wai on the Ulu line, but born and brought up in Kahiki. Because the chiefs of (the island of) Hawaii had carelessly intermarried with junior chiefly lines, Pa'ao went to Kahiki to find a relative of pure blood who could compete in rank with the chiefly lines of the other islands. He recites a chant to invite Lono-kaeho to return with him. Lono-kaeho declines the invitation, but sends Pili in his place. Pili becomes high chief and wins the support of the people and he becomes the ancestor of the chiefs of Hawaii on the Ulu line down to the late 19th century.

As there are no written records before the 1700's in Hawaii I don't know the exact date that Pili-kaaiea lived, but it is believed to be around 1100 or 1200 AD that Pa'ao arrived in Hawaii."

Yoshitsune was a general of the Minamoto clan of Japan in the late Heian and early Kamakura period. His life was a short but tragic, and his skill with a sword is still the standard of high excellence in the Samurai world. Extensive Manga and animes have been created about his life along with the Japanese classics including Akira Kurosawa's film The Men Who Tread on the Tiger's Tail and the great Japanese literary classic Heike Monotogari (Tale of the Heike)."

"Edward of Woodstock (June 15, 1330 – June 8, 1376),
Prince of Wales, effective military leader, and very popular during his life.
(from wiki): Although Edward is almost always now called the "Black Prince", he was never known as such during his lifetime. He was instead known as Edward of Woodstock, after his place of birth. The "Black Prince" moniker does not appear in writing until at least 200 years after Edward's death. Its origin is uncertain; according to tradition, it derived from an ornate black cuirass (piece of body armor) presented to the young prince by Edward III at the battle of Crécy. However, it is also possible that the name was first coined by French chroniclers in reference to the ruinous military defeats he had inflicted on France or his cruelty in these"

"Mine is based on a famous Icelandic viking and skald named Egill Skallagrímsson. He was born in Iceland in the year 910 and died some time around the year 990. Many historians consider Egill to be one of the deadliest men that ever lived in bladed combat- several accounts tell of him slaughtering as many as 20 or more armed men singlehandedly, and even dispatching a feared berserker with relative ease."

Mine won't be in the competition, sve, but once I get hold of JenZee and work out some details of timing, maybe we'll be posting both in the crit section. If not, I'll post mine there after this competition is over.

If it's because you didn't post it on the 3th, I think you have a right to post anyway because you were organizing the event and it's time consuming. I would prefer you to post with the rest. I'm not making rules here, but I think it would be fair.

Sve, mine's a real painting. That means it needs photo'd. I discovered the camera I needed to do that with was faulty on new year's eve, so I stopped painting. No matter how i worked it out, I'd be at least a week late.

Besides, one of my original arguments against the timing on this competition was that JenZee, myself and a few others were going to be screwed royally time-wise unless the start of the contest was after new year's...something a certain bonehead didn't give a shit about, apparently, which WAS his right. I am happy with the pieces that were entered, though. I think you all did a really amazing job, except for a few "I didn't read the rules" mistakes here and there...heehee...

Some of the match-ups are incredible. I'm not sure who to put money on in your's, for example...

Well, I'm feeling a bit of an anti-climax right now. The contest hasn't exactly ended with a lot of fanfare, just a slow trickle of discussion. I've still got a lot of momentum right now though. I don't feel like writing a lot of detailed critiques, but I'd love to do some overpaints if anybody wants some. I basically never draw or paint people, so I can't really help out much with anatomy problems. But I might be able the help out with lighting issues. I'll do them on a first come first serve basis until I tire out or have to go back to my real work life again. I'll send the overpaint back to you via email or private message, and you can decide for yourself if you want to post it in the tread for others to see. And I'd feel honored if anyone else wold like to paint on top of mine - go for it!

one note about the side-by-side presentation: i strongly urge judges to use it as a valuable reference but to also visit the original submissions thread (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=86130)'s links so they can see the submissions unaffected by a generation of reduction and jpegging. i hadn't visited the Image Ready link 'til this morning and it hadn't registered that the images there were not the same sizes as submitted.

These look great side by side Ilae. I just want to say that this was one of my favorite tdomes I'd ever been in. Alot of smack talk slingin, and alot of fun getting to know everyone.
The only thing I regret is not getting a chance to participate in the private schoolie group and alotting more time to my work. The holidays were a big time consumer for me and this contest kept slipping down my list of priorities. With that said and the holidays behind us I suggest getting all of your collective asses over to the BATTLE TD (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=86460&goto=newpost) for some serious quasi-self portrait-ish slaughter. (please see rules for a better understanding of the topic)

Thank you fro being a good sport, giving me a much needed knowledge while criticizing my piece, presenting me with wonderful paintover which I will keep in my folder and study more.\

Thanks for sweet laughs as well.

Hope you will create some fantasy pieces and send them to Spectrum, Exotique. expose your art more and more, because you need to do that and your art deserves it.

Thanks to Nerdinger for great idea of TD on history theme and for being a good sport as well. Hope we will beat schollies one more time in Enlightenment, Renaissances, century of great discoveries, late 19th century..

Thanks for Ilaekae for thoughtful, loving presentation of our images. That's a lot of respect to artists in the manner you did it, IMO. Hope to see your painting in one week, yeah , new deadline ;). Kidding of course/

you can wait a little longer and take me up on a TD Im about to start, promises to be one of the better challenges after this one.
My TD will feature a kick ass topic, with minimal to no research required
and a "pick your opponent" option. Freedom of artistic expression and totally conceptual in nature. I'm going to organize it myself-so it wont be as half assed(sorry nerd) as this one.
I expect all of you guys to be there, including the no-shows who disapointed everyone and the ones who didnt even know they were in.

Ha, ha, Yah, well that sounds like a decent thunderdoome. So if Im reading you right your a bit to scared for my chalenge then?
I dont need the Neard for a buddy judge, and I dont see how timezone has anything to do with it.
You can ONLY work on it for 2 Hours and that is a honnor system, you post it here in the thread on a specific day, you can have any judge you like, bring your mom for a judge for all I care and we dont really need a punnishment... If neard came up with a punnishment it would be too weird for anyone.
LOL.
all jokes aside, dont take me to seriously, this was mearly a friendly fun idea, if you dont feel like it we wait for your TD and I take you on there instead. Anyhow its all cool man ;).

4 judges have deliberated (against me) and we're still waiting for one more judge to deliberate (against me). AHHHHH maaan!!!

Also, I could be a great judge, I learnt from the 5 judges we have now how it's done, you turn up late, submit your results days after you should and vote against the devilishly handsome organiser..Simple!

-Nerdjudger

P.S I reckon the last results should come in in a few hours, Mike Dutton get judging!

HEY! JLAlfaro! you can't advertise in my thread!

Yes! I'll be your judge. All that responsibilty will make me feel like a real man for a change.

Also, everyone needs to send PM's to Mike Dutton telling him to put down those pork rinds, stop watching Sesame street, get off the couch and get judging!!!!

Aaaaarghhh, NOOOOOOO!!!!!! Where is my katana, I'll ritualy decapitate myself for betraing(sp?) my team! :xpld:

On a side note, mr. nerdlicker, are you sure you haven't offered some shamefull services to the judges, resulting in the totally ridiculous and UNFAIR voting? You don't have to answer, I'll be too busy crying and bleeding to death in my bathroom.

P.S. Grats to the GO team for the very much deserved win I'd say, since I'll be dead and won't be held responsible for those words from my own team. :P
It was very fun TD!

Nothing like a little suspense, right? :) Sorry to keep you all waiting. Congratulations to everyone for participating and to the winners. As a sidenote, I wish there was a way to judge based on historical accuracy as well, but it looked like the main criteria was figure drawing. Some of you had great figure drawings, but not the best reference for your costumes. Some went the other way around. But all in all, a great job. Thank you for having me on the panel. It was an honor..... especially the complimentary pork rinds.

Don't worry Vorbiss, I didn't tamper the results, when I realised us selfies had the majority of votes I thought there wouldn't be much point in that after all...:}

Thanx neard. To me you are the real winner in all of this.

"Thanks, Nerdlinger"

"and a big thanks to Nerd"

That's right, let it all out...let's monitor the love...

lastly, this is it guys it's just about over and I know we're all ready to go out and make everything right in the world, but as long as us selfies are still here I've got to ask if sometime in the future the "GO TEAM" wants to take on another group on CA? keep the old team alive!!:) :) :) :)

Peace out brothers!
