To the best of my knowledge, it's 'Boo-gro'. That's what Google yielded for me a while ago, anyway.

it was tremendously funny to me when I was 10 to say booger-oh, which I believe is an acceptable pronunciation (though an "ooo" sound may be more appropriate, as in "boooger" as said above)

My tiny heart is bleeding right now ! :P
Rebecca is close, even if the "gue" is the most difficult part, due to the way French people pronounciate the "E". Said quickly, his name sound close to "'Boo-gro" as said by Midnight. Maybe the most natural way for be understood by French people ?

what i want to know is how the hell he managed to live with his mother so long. :)

i just call him "booger-nose." hehe...
I hear he was only 5 foot tall, and to compensate for his short stature he always did huge 12 foot paintings. Thats my theory at least.

boo-jeroh (or quickly boojroh) right? if g is too hard and sh is too soft, I'm pretty sure a j does it. A soft j. A french soft J that is.
I can see how hard this would be to 'splain it to people who haven't taken at least a french class :$

This is the way I say it. It must be right, because I like the way it sounds :)

Most of the French I have spoken to say it with the hard G...though not all.

I always imagined it sounded like Boudreaux with a g instead of a d, "Bu-grow",
I used to pronounce it Boge-ray-oh

I guess the easiest way for english speakers would be to say Booger-row, with a french R (you know what I mean) if it were Boo-jer-row the u in gue would have to go.

I remember asking this question to a french girl in art school years ago, and she sounded so good when she said it that I forgot to learn the pronunciation I was asking for in the first place. So thanks for this post.

while we're on the topic, what's the pronounciation for all sorts of artist's names? My old lecturers would all pronounce them differently.
This is what I've been thinking they are, so please correct me before i embarrass myself further.
Ingres - on-gre
Rondin - row-dan
Munch - Moonk
Schiele - she-lee
Titian - tiss-ian
Degas - de-ga
van Gogh - van gaw
Delacroix - dela-kwa
and finally
Picasso - Pick-arse-hole
any corrections?

There's a book called Klee as in Clay that's a pronunciation guide to artists' names. It's out of print, but finding a library copy shouldn't be too hard.

Yup. I wouldn't know who the heck they're talking about if someone would blab about 'that famous Row Dean sculptor'. Who? Was he an american? OH ! You mean Rodin! Gates of hell, etc. yeah get it... ahem.
NOW I understand why non french-speaker have trouble with french names. Not only for artists but for everything :) When chatting on TeamSpeak (something similar to Ventrilo), guys had a hard time with my nick at first but with a little hear/say practice anyone can do it.
P.S.: Delacroix = Dela-kRwah hard R !
*has visions of Jane Birkin speaking.* tee-hee!

Native french speaker here, it's boo-gr-oh, with hard g like GRRR. Jesus christ, French is a language not a secret code. There's no weird accentuation, clicks or other cryptic pronunciations in this word!

If you don't speak it, it might as well be. I don't expect people to know how to pronounce my name, and i don't know how to tell them =\. So I'd say ndebele/zulu can seem like secret codes too. Good thing I'm not a world famous old master.
