Okay....I've been given the chance to mess around with Maya...I'm blazing through the beginner tutorials and now ready to model my first character. My problem is...most tutorials show using reference guide. I gotta be missing something because every time I try to load a reference onto a plane in maya...I get nuthin'.....any suggestions would be appreciated...

Cool thnaks....just messing around with the attributes and I figured out a roundabout way to get the reference how I needed it....kinda.

You can create a reference plane in two ways. One is of course, using an physical plane polygon or NURBS. But this would require you to turn on textures.
The second way is actually to go into your camera attributes. (select your camera, and press Ctrl+A), under environment, you can create an image plane. Load your image into that. You can adjust the size and distance/placement from the camera, and can see it physically in the perspective view.
The best thing to do is to make a very light reference so that it doesn't obscure your geometry.

I disagree on the concept of "learning something new everyday."
I've gone for several days in a row not learning a single thing. And have even forgotten many things.
