Hey I.was.ink, yes, those are great (and really show the influences you mentioned). How's Art Center? Heard anything yet of your portfolio?

Great sketches!
Some poses are still looking a bit too little defined but some are also pretty cool (bottom right #1).
I like the looseness in your strokes on most figures.

Thanks so much guys. I do try to keep it loose, but at the same time find a focus area.
@gasmask- I agree with you about going farther with my stuff. I do learn a lot as well, for instance with the guy in the top left. I tried recreating the face of the guy in the top right, it was sort of hard and didn't come out exactly, but I learned a lot about portaiture. Another funny thing is, the guy in the third page that has the most human like qualitys with the stretched head I made up based on a picture by Jessica Alba. That's the first time I take something and Totally change it around.

these are way cool man, just from these pages i can tell you really have a brain at work when you're drawing and thats INDISPENSIBLE when it comes to this kinda thing. my only advice to you would be to soak up as much inspiration as you can, from where ever you get it cuz it really seems to be working for you. and maybe start drawing portraits of friends and fam to get more of a sense of light on faces,
keep posting man

Well, I think that I might have gotten too much inspiration. Since I got Jon Foster's book, I'm constantly looking at it, and a lot of others work on ca. But anyways, I have this new sketch, I want to paint on a canvas, but my friend (sepulveda) told me that he likes it, but it looks to much like Jon Foster's art; And that's something I don't necessarily want, but then again, as a sort of thank you. I was also thinking of making it an ode to Jon Foster just for being such a great inspiration. So what I'd like to here suggestions on, is what can I do to change it so it doesn't look like I'm copying his style, or I'm a Foster wannabe.
I guess I just got too inspired ;)

I'd like any insight, and crits on whatever you guys/gals think is wrong, good, bad, crappy, or whatever.
thanks

Good to know. I'll make sure to fix that.
Any suggestions about the whole Foster look alike? I mean does it, doesn't it?
thanks for the comment, incog.

Hey once again nice looseness, only thing i can say is when ur dealing with things other than form like machinery id practice ur line quality and being more presice which is what im workin on as well, keep pumpin the stuff out..

THanks for the crit.
We talked on aim about it too folks and he helped me out a lot. He pointed out things, like functionality, and use of the machines gadgets and little knick knacks.
These things really helped gasmask.

Hey iwasink...
I know you wanted me to be honest so I will try to be as anal as I can. I think the limbs look very foster-like as well. Foster was inspired by hale and you were inspired by foster but the first thing I thought of when I saw it was that the rigid pose of the arm and the subject matter looks a lot like phil hale. Foster uses less rigid posing and some other things. I like the sketch a lot...although the anatomy is a bit unclear. It seems you haven't "committed" to defining the muscles in a certain way...I don't mean adding more shading...etc...I just mean the actual mass that exists there hasn't been nailed down. Not sure if that makes sense. The things that look like foster are the circle indents for the eyes and the shoulders...he makes goggles so well doesn't he hehe...and also the background is very foster-esque as well...something cutting through the scene like that. I think a way to make it not as foster-like is to think of a whole bunch of different details that you think would be cool and add them to it. For instance if you gave him metal wings or if you gave him a cape...or if the goggles weren't there etc... There's nothing wrong with learning a particular style and then departing from it later in my opinion. Just be bold about telling everyone foster has influenced you. Foster was influenced by phil hale and now he has moved (and is moving more recently) away from that type of work but people still sometimes can see the influence in his work...who cares...no one lives in a vacuum and this design you came up with yourself...just push it further...use more of your imagination and apply it to the piece. Keep it up bud it's lookin great.

I.was.ink (btw, whatever happened to Rock.it.science?), these are comin along nicely, I'm bad at giving critiques but its not hard to see ur improving. Unless there is something in particular you want me to comment about I think keep on drawing and studying is the best piece of advice i can offer at this point.

Once I change my name to rock.it.science some people didnt know who I was anymore, and I didn't like that, so back to the original I came.
MCM, thank you sooooooooo much. I needed to know that as well. Yeah its very fosterish like, but oh well. It is just a sketch, but you do have a point, about how I should change and emphasize certain things so that they look like an iwasink original.
Oh.....how freakin cool are goggles, and I just freakin love those stiff poses. I'm going to go to the comic-con, and I guess I'll make a print of my sketch(of course I'll work on it some more) and I'll give it to him.
You're also right about the arm, its the hardest thing for me to draw, so hence the uncertainties.
Thanks for being so anal about your critique!
;)

hey iwasink, i think you may be over thinking the influence thing. basically you have a pose or gesture that kind of resembles something i may do or phil may do or before that jeff jones may have done. but this piece is still yours! know one owns the idea of cool and unique body language. you have many things in this that are you and that is perfect. keep pushing and do not be so concerned as to whether you are too influenced, you will cheat yourself of some fun experimentation if you do.
this looks cool by the way!

Thanks for the insight foster.
MCM, I decided to not paint it, don't know why? Well...... actually, i do, it's cuz I don't really know what i would be doing and I don't want to mess it up, so I'll just leave it as a dandy sketch!
(I don't know why I said dandy......)

I'm cool Osk. I've just been painting and drawing as much as possible. I did a portrait in pastels last night at Art Center. It was a bitch, but very fun.
