[ Quite a few angles you could shoot this one from, I wager... ]

[ We'll probably see some portion of the station building itself as well as a number of older vehicles... whatever has been the standard. ]

[ Go draw some. ]

The short answer? training.

Longer answer?
You learn to use various tools better and better with time & training, and you learn to draw things better and better each time you draw them.

So for example I used the following brushes to make this picture
http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/1932/brushesvj8.th.jpg (http://img297.imageshack.us/my.php?image=brushesvj8.jpg)
Note that I've stamped the brush once, and have then drawn a line with the same brush.
(I've used different brushes on my spectre, and any other DSG)

Then you have tools like perspective etc.

Still they are just tools one learns on your path to a better drawing

& how can you improve, how can you make better then I? Training ~ that is not just drawing, but trying to draw better & faster each time - look at what you do wrong, what others do better, or simply what you could do better ~ and then improve.

So you suck on perspective? then draw everything in perspective and learn how perspective works. You suck on colours? always draw with colours when training. You suck at drawing humans? draw humans, and use references of real humans. The list goes on, and I find that I will change my focus from day to day. So one day I find that my skills on drawing animals suck I'll take forth pictures of goats and dogs and just draw various animals all day. The next I'll try to improve my human face, the next lush forests.

& compared to my own star, where I will be tomorrow and the day after that I suck, and will probably suck at drawing to the day I die, as I can always learn more and more as time passes, but I can never learn everything; the important part is that I'll suck less with time, and that those better then me will be fewer and fewer each passing day.

That said I'm never really happy with what I produce, and if I am, I've done something wrong; that is laid my critical thinking on the side and so far that have never been a good thing.

hey dan,

hope you don't mind me saying... but the perspective is a little wonky. The horizon for the vehicle and the rest of the pic don't match up. The vanishing point for the ladder is too strong a hint I guess.

Yeah I know - I was hoping people would miss it more :)

It was a fast sketch and I just threw stuff in from left to right and then decided not to work too much in fixing the problem.

For example the height of the soldiers are really weird and some at the back are huge compared to those in front.

oh wtf I'll fix some of it, my hopes where too high on peoples blind eyes :nohope: .

Nice work all so far :)

dan - did you get that vyle dvd - heres what i came up with using some of his brushes.

I really like the fact that you've created your own brushes - nice work brother - prefer your first version though

Yeah, but it took some time for it to sink in - for I've done stuff like grass/leafs/bushes before that - but the more abstract happenings was something that was somewhat of an eye-opener.

I got critique that it was hard to read, the first version - so I made it simpler and more normal - for good or/and bad.

Goran
I was over at smogyboy earlier today, enjoying the lot of your creations; but like with this one it was really nice to see the raw pencilship you posses ~ something that gets lost in translation once you stylize them (something you do so well to boot). :hatsoff:

johnn
November 20th, 2006, 11:22 AM
yeah, effective pencil work Goran, I like it. It's such a simple tool but so effective when used well!

Dan - another version! the trees make it look like an park rather than a parking lot though! thanks for posting the custom brushes, nice to get some insite to some other illustration processes.

given that I have a tree brush - we are talking about two strokes here ;)

5-10 minute example of my tree, grass etc brushes at work (I was slow as well, as I was showing my brother how etc)
So for speed the speedpainting method is king - a monkey could have drawn the same with my brushes :(

dan liimatta: Very cool design. I like the clean, sharp look and the colours... good composition too.

watereater: Hehe... donuts! The perspective is a little off in places but atleast you're getting stuck in.

rodriguez: I'm not too hot on the choice of persepective and composition, but the pink and gray front of the vehicle looks good. Nice choice.

LadyHydralisk: The little eye-bot is a cutie, although I would have liked to have seen it more dominant. Were the police riding uni-cycles before?! :}

johnn: Great design and stunning composition. Good job.

machzero: Nice solid design. The blurred background tends to draw the eye too much, although it might just be my eyes.

Vanvalen: Quite a nice design. I like the chunky wheels.

setmonkey: Nice and clean looking. I can certainly see some of Vyle in there.

goran: Nice to see a sketch in here. Great design and rendering.

the first time i read the title, i interpreted it as a new squadron of unit that just sits around doing nothing in the station. Good thing u guys wernt as stupid as me!

Goran and Dan been enjoying your work everywhere. these increases your domination of this site ^^
Horse fly love your texture and design of the new unit.
Vanvalen really nice comic-y feel
Johnn nice sketch so far and composition, really looking forward to this being developed a bit further.
The rest are also very good...

as for me i will try to do one now.

Hey daa, I really like the color palatte and design. I don't really get a sense of what it is, just that its armed and looks cool.

This is mine in ink. I didn't finish some linear shading on the the mechs shadow because I'm beat. It works without it. I haven't done a one point perspective in a while...

sorry daadaa, I can't help you out with what it is that you have painted either! but it looks good and I think I might want one for christmas. As you requested a crit, I will suggest that the tonal range is a little on the dark side. But, it's a 45min visualisation, reads clearly regarding forms and atmosphere so I would call it a success all round in general :)

Dan - once again thank for the samples with custom brushes, I gotta start making some and having a play around.

Setmonkey - the tone has helped it along, good work.

For the speed boost it's fantastic.
At the moment mostly trying to break out of the mould though, and I'm currently spending more time on brushes then the pieces I actually make ;)

I felt compeled to do just a little doodle for this one. I've been reading all day and have been feeling a little agitated since I finnished the book well before 5:00 today. This helped calm me down and gave me something to do while my mind tried to cope with the fact that the book was gone and there was still time to kill. Normally I read books in one sitting and by the time I'm finnished I'm ready for sleep.

hey im new here... i really like the idea of DSG's...
i know this turned out really crappy, and i didnt put any background... i need a tablet>:{

Hey Retrostream, don't worry about your equipment. If you keep plugging away with pencil and felt-tips you will do just fine. Tablets are a great tool but all the important skills that you should be practicing can be done just as well (probably better) with traditional media.

thing is... im way to lazy to draw a bg with a pencil... and without at least some bg or details this picture above looks really plain (not to mention how dull it turned out)
i guess this theme is not my thing (i screwed up the perspective really, and the whole design is crappy)
but thats what i like i about conceptart.org: it "makes" your practice stuff you dont usually do...
i did draw this in just 5 minutes or so... i should give myself more time... oh well..

hey Retrosteam,

i agree with johnn, you'd be amazed at how fast and detailed you can get with a plain pencil, especially when it comes to quick sketching. I still can't get anyway close to my normal level of detail using a wacom (without a lot of effort that is).
