Is America the only option?

Not that I don't love you guys tremendously... but can anyone recommend any good schools or courses in Europe that have a leaning towards traditional painting techniques? I've looked through the Degree shows for all the UK colleges and I'm not really very inspired.

Not that I know a thing about it, but I feel there's gotta be some traditional painting going on in France. Maybe PM one of the Frenchies that frequent the board? Sparth, Bengal, or Bone might know.

Kinda shocking that the UK would be devoid of a decent traditional school. Are art schools over there still reeling from the modern art bomb?

Tedsuo: Cheers. btw, I think it's more to do with apathy in the colleges than any kind of art-movement mentality at the moment.

sparth: Hehe. I think I need to get back to studying ordinary painting as often I have no plan or anything when I do a picture. I just use intuition. I guess I could learn from books, but working full-time in a non-art job doesn't make that easy. I think it either has to be all or nothing (or at the very least less art).

MindCandyMan: Excellent! I doubt I could get in there though. (though I think I could afford the fees okay).

They teach you from the ground up though ceenda...they start from the beginning so I wouldn't worry about that too much. People that have never painted before are accepted there. I think it mostly has to do with a commitment to painting from life and your work ethic.

I hope you go for it. I don't know what you want to end up doing, but I think you'd make a really good concept artist for film / games with all your 'dark' ideas. I suppose what I'm really saying is I want to play a game with some of those characters / environments in :)

I sort of did the same thing a couple of years ago and went back to architecture school to do my diploma after spending my free time drawing sci-fi stuff. I don't know if the teaching is soo important, it's more like having a focus and projects / dealines to work on that makes you push yourself in ways that you wouldn't in your present situation.

there's a school which I've come across in Italy http://www.angelartschool.com - Classical Realist Art it's small though 20+ students....BUT they have some special courses for people who are only visiting 1-2 months at a time.

I can't vouche for it, never attended.

That's a fantastic school as well...if you complete the whole program you have the option of working with Mr. Angel on some murals in Italy and other stuff...pretty cool!
