Hi folks

These are two paintings I did recently. The first one is a book cover style composition I wanted to experiment with, since I noticed a lot of my stuff tends to be very horizontal. The second is an old game concept sketch that I re-worked. Hope you like them...

I wanted to add a couple more recent paintings, and since they are so similar in feel to these two, I thought I would add them here. Please let me know what you think, comments, crits etc. I'm PRETTY sure I haven't posted them here...

Yo,

The second one is very compelling. Its a world I would definitely like to visit. I do however feel the figure is not as enthralling as the beautiful environment.

thanks for sharing,
-Joshua

hey francis really nice to see you here, and i like how your style has changed over the years since the teamgt forum.

the more paintery style really fits and looks really great.

in the first pic the text is kinda distracting, it looks really good though :chug:

the second pic is really cool to.

you need to post some more here francis, and post some sketches to.

Hey I'm glad people found these interesting. I had a good time doing them, very different from work subject matter at the moment.

tegehel - thank you, I will, although I am very sporadic when it comes to art forums.

ShawnYe - cool, glad you think so, thank you.

Joshua - yeah, I have to agree - the figure is not very well designed. Although he is sort of be the subject in the image, I was more interested in the whole composition, and didn't spend the normal amount of time considering his design.

Kambei - the two pieces are pretty much just painting exercises. The first, with the woman, was an exercise in composition and color for me, things I have been struggling with for a while. The second one was a painting I did based on an old concept design sketch for a game that was cancelled. I thought it was a decent enough image as a pen sketch, and I wanted to try rendering a very dramatic lighting scheme. Other than that, there is not really a whole lot behind these images.

Ant4D - thank you; I referenced an image of Jennifer Connelly, although I don't think I ended up with a very good likeness. Not my strength, as I'm more used to making stuff up than getting a good likeness! I posted a close up of her face below.

Sparth - thank you very much, glad you liked it.

CleptoCat - cool, I'm glad.

MindCandyMan - thank you, I have very little spare time these days, but I do like to work on personal stuff like this when I can - so, when I finish more I will post them!

Behemot5 - thanks man.

Tyboogie - probably right, I remember pushing the figure around quite a bit on that one...

Crash - thanks for the feedback and observations; yeah I think the old stuff is pretty weak, hehe...

Davi - cool man, thx.

Yaseck - thank you - the text is actually the same on both lines, the second one is some dingbat font or something. I just thought it looked kind of mysterious.

Glenn K - thank you man I appreciate it.

MCorriero - thank you. To answer your question, games offers a steady paycheck (usually!) and benefits, but lower rates than film work. If you hook up with a good representative or manage to get into one of the unions, you can make a really good living doing movie and tv work, but it's a long road to get there. If you go into games, I don't think you will make 50K right off the bat. A good, valuable concept designer in games has to have a really wide knowledge base, to be able to cover all aspects of design. Most often, that comes after school and after working for a while, gaining experience in many different genres of projects.

It can be kind of a trap to concentrate in one type of game, or a specific look or genre - you can get sort of "typecast" with your portfolio. Better to show that you can handle many different kinds of design work, and be able to adapt to different situations. It's different from making a name for yourself as an artist - usually in that case you want to develop a style, and have a certain look associated with your name.

Other people might disagree with me, but I think it's a valuable skill to be able to be "transparent" as an artist, so that you can assume any role you need to in order to successfully pull off a concept design exercise. Usually in a conceptual design situation for a game, you are not just designing one isolated ship or weapon or character - you are designing a whole world or universe, and everything you come up with that inhabits that universe needs to follow the same basic "world rules." It's much harder than it sounds, at least to be able to do it right.

Hm I could go on for hours about this, but I'll shut up now.

Here's a close up shot of the face from the first painting.

i hate you for being so damn good!

the chick with de wingies is great and all the color worked into it with her contrasted skin just really stands out.

the one below it, i have no clue what its about, looks like jaw dropping concept art, some sort of wizardish..... i have no clue. killer.
