Round #41

Topic:
Serve the chow for free!

Deadline:
SUNDAY, December 3rd 2006

What's this? Here's the deal:
You get to make a background for next week's Character of the Week mission.
One rule: make it a good background for a character to be presented in. Think about scale and space. This does not mean that you *have* to make it easy on them chowers.. a nice angled perspective for instance could make their lives just a notch harder, but think of the extra cowbell value!
Be sure to give them enough light to show off their work though :)
Other than that, free for all.. no set topic, medium or style.
That means nothing to keep you from submitting an entry - they'll be watching!

**update**
i'm gonna leave this one open for a bit longer.. 2 entries (maybe 3) is ridiculous... Restrictions are good for inspiration/creativity i guess :)

Here's 4 options to go for:

- Glory stand (design a scene where the winner of a race/match gets his moment of glory. think sports, think unreal tournament, think vicroty speech.)

- Elven wardrobe / changing room (design a room for a foxy female elf to change clothes in - think curvy :) )

- Scifi dungeon keeper backdrop (cellblock corridor, janitor room, control room,...)

- The Leap of Faith (right on the edge of the seaside cliffs, this spot is a all time fav for depressed jumpers. You can find it right next to the dead tree of gloom)

get to it! deadline extended

OBLIO EDIT: Deadline is extended again since the CHOW guys are in revolutions! They have been invited to join here too. Love thy neighbour! Kick his ass.. in art :)

oh oh oh I am so on.. can we throw in our own characters while we are at it? :P

Hyver
November 16th, 2006, 08:31 AM
sure thing, they can help define the setting for the main character to be put in by ChOW

So if I want to draw a view of a hockey rink and a zamboni machine, they will be able to do the "zamboni driver from hell" as long as the angle is such that they can draw at least a 3/4 view of the zamboni driver, yes?

Far to the north, amid harsh mountains and frozen seas lies the cradle of one of the world's oldest religions. Although "The Serpent of the Sun" hasn't got the largest amount of followers in the world, it is certainly the most widespread, spanning all the corners of the world. Once in their lives, every disciple of The Serpent must venture on a pilgrimage to the Northern Temple, where it is said that their god rests. The long and hazardous journey to the temple is the act of aknowledging their faith, so that one may be spared when the Great Serpent returns.

This is my first EOW, as well as my first (serious) attempt at painting an enviroment.
Constructive critiscism most welcome!

Update! Minor edit to the concept description.
Minor changes to the pic as well.

Here's what I got so far. If I find time I might fix it up some.

This is a view from the first row directly behind the home bench of a AA hockey team. I left the door open so there can either be player, stick boy, or coach going in or out. There is also the possibility of a player jumping over the boards. Ambitious people might render a face off or the Zamboni driver from hell. A Linesman (official) might be hanging around in that neighborhood calling offsides. A superfan might be in the foreground pounding on the glass.

ill try to get something done before midnight, for the sake of having at least 3 participants. its a fun challenge, im curious that it got so little attention.

There are no restrictions and so it has now become impossible to draw anything. (Disturbingly paradoxical)

yup, its got a different prompt, only the form and not the theme.. as a lurker i was just hoping to see some artists really fly with it, was bummed to only see 2 people here ^^.

Just 2 entries? That's too bad! Adarias, I really hope you have time to post your entry so that we can have a little variety in this topic...

if we are already nearly done with something that doesnt fit the bill, we don't need to scrap it, do we?

I saw there was a shortage on enviros here, so I made one. I see a giant standing on that platform, but of course it's all open for interpretation.

*edit* -> updated with a little tighter pic.

Hyver- Are those just suggestions, or do we have to choose from those? I haven't started on mine yet, due to recent computer problems, but I have an idea.
gl0gg- Very nice. Are you going to tighten it up, or leave it loose?

Hyver

i was merely handing out some suggestions - it's still free for all ;)

Moai - Hey thanks. I suppose that depends on the deadline, it definitely needs a little tightening up but I am not sure when I get some time to do it. I will try though :)

gl0gg - Very cool pic! The building on the left could use more details though,
cuz it looks kinda dull compared to the detailed platform and the (awesome) city in the background.

gorgoth - thanks man, and yeah you're definitely right. I'll noodle a little more on it in a couple of hours and hope it gets done before the deadline.

looks sick twig.... my only concern is that with your three point perspective and distortion thereof that a character without the same fisheye effect when placed in that environment might look a bit awkward... catch my drift?

Grand Stand:

The city of Antioch celebrates an annual festival capped-off by a physical challenge, a game much like king of the castle, except played to the death. The winner has the honor of being the Serpent's consort until the next festival. The Serpent can be either male or female.

Hey EOW guys

Some cool stuff going on here!

Just so you know, the Character of the week theme is "Vampire Hunter Elvis Impersonator"

Since we're not having a lot of turnout here, I've decided to post an environment related to the theme to get things rolling:

http://www.gabo.ca/xgabo_eow42_chow.jpg

"Disgraceland"

Hey chow guys, you're free to use it as you wish, change it, improve it, place your characters in it, let's make this thing happen. The idea is to take any of the environments posted here and use it as you see fit.

EOW guys are also invited to create more options for the chow guys!

Cheers

Hmmm... now should go along with the CHOW theme... or the EOW theme... or perhaps there's a middleground somewhere... :P

I think we should have a regular Environment of the Week thread again, so that we have votes for a winner after one week. A good topic and the entries will come. Also, by not mentioning it has to be suitable for 3D level building, we will have more participation, I believe. 'cause the stiffness and sterile quality of linear side views takes the artistic spontaneity out of it... We are concept artists, not architects.

Hyver are you on vacation? I hope you're not sick or something. Calling all CA admins - please get the EOW going again. The deadling for this thread supposedly was December 3rd. It's the 17th now!

I agree. I am just starting to get into EOW. I think its one of the more challenging areas of concept and plan on hitting it as much as I can.
