Hey everyone, Im Iiori. I'm not into finishing pieces to much so I think I'll dump all my work in here.

Im heading into college next year for Graphic arts, and I really would like to try and improve as much as I can. I hope to update it a lot. I then want to get into some illustration and maybe a bit of animation.

I haven't had much schooling in art as I would like, but I've been picking things up here and there, and anything you see that I can improve on I would be more than happy to hear it.

I'll start off with some Marker Sketches.

hmm. I really like that one sketch next to the dreadlock guy, using springy lines is an interesting way to create volume.

while it looks like you have a good sense of lighting, I think you may want to try using that more sketchy techniqe you had in the girl holding the brush/pencil... it may help your work look more solid.

oh yeah, and the toad thing is sweet :evilbat:

Thanks for replying. ^^

Yeah I should do more sketchy ones, I think if I get a chance tonight before work or tomarrow, Ill do it that way and post it.

I got a new anatomy book and I figured the best way to learn it all is to sketch it as I go along. So this is the start.

Bones..

Heres a nother one, I didnt really go into face details so shes kinda scary I just wanted to get the pose.

heres an interesting activity: use that anatomy book as a reference and draw out the skeletal anatomy of a person in a photograph. Mabey also try that spiral style on an exteme perspective!

This is a sketch of what I want to paint later on. I still want to get a decent pencil drawing out of it first. The word behind it is Silenced. I know I'm not being very creative, but I thought this could work out.

If you see anything wrong with it I'd love to know. Id hate to start using PS and then find something majorly wrong. (Like the second picture.. >< I didn't notice the wonky chin.)

some cool sketches in here. i'm having fun with an anatomy book right now myself. :)

i'll pop in here once in awhile to see how you're doing. :)

btw, i saw your last post in another thread, you mention the person in the back is a guy. just thought i'd mention it's hard to tell whether he's a guy or a girl. i think his features are a little too soft. men tend to have more angular features than women.

keep it up! :)

i am glad that you are learning the anatomy from a book. i think that the most important thing to remember when doing this is that you need to apply it to your figure drawings. you can become quite good at drawing the bones and muscles and what not but u need to keep it in your head that these are the structural part of what is in a figure. draw the muscles and what not and then take a look at like a swimsuit model and draw the muscles or bones over the picture. this will help you visualize how these parts are in the body. you want to remember that what you are studying in the book is not so that you can draw the parts well it is so that a drawing that these are incorporated in are correct. i am sure that you know what i mean.
good luck

Woah, long time no update. Well for me since I haven't drawn in ages it seems. >< Work work and more work. Interesting things happen when working with people.

Anyways heres another sketch for a website I visit. I really honestly don't like it but, whatever..I'm very not political.

Its suppose to be a drawing of three famous men. I hope that you can tell of two. The third one I drew went more into a characture. **oops** This was probably a 20 to 30 min sketch so please excuse some of the head shapes.

More marker? I could probably handal that, though it is my figures I want to improve on the most. ^^

I found some old stuff, I think Ill post it. I haven't colored a picture in such a long time.:O I should get back into it.

you were disappointed and stopped working on it? why the hell, it looks great! okay, maybe the hand is a little bit flat...but the face is just great! i love the area around the eyes, and the way his head fades into his hair...
the right girl from the love hina sketch looks a litte strange. especially her eyes and nose. are her eyes really supposed to be as wide spread as that? the left girl looks good, though.

Thanks for the comment Golgari! ^^

The lips I couldn't right on that one. They remind me of a basses mouth. haha I'm glad you like him though.

haha now that you mention it I notice that too. Oops. Thanks for pointing that out. Ill remember that for next time.:D

Here is a couple more, well one more sketch in two different forms.

I still have some of the facial features to fix on this one, specially the lips and such, I figured I should post it now.

Cool, I like your sketches, and admire you for taking on the study of anatomy (I'm doing the same thing right now). That last face looks very good. Her eyes are very well done...they really stand out in the sketch, I almost didn't notice the mistakes in the lips until I read where you mentioned it. the color looks good so far, but very airbrushy, lets see some more detail on there! is it from a photo?

Iiori
July 26th, 2003, 09:41 PM
Thanks Jeff. ^^ Anatomy is really kicking my butt at the moment, but its really fun learning new things about it.

Im glad you like the last sketch. Though I honestly not sure how to make it more realistic, I will add hair and try to finish things off, but Im not sure how to make it less airbrushy. Any tips?

I was working from a small, B& W photo sorta, just really got the eyes and shape of the face, but I ended up just going on my own with it. ^^

Here are a couple new sketches, I haven't much to show since I've been working a lot. The first one is me working with perspective. I saw another do it in here and thought I should try it out. ^^

http://membres.lycos.fr/vbcserenity/banner/sk5.jpg
Any tips would me much appreicated. I didn't have a ruler so please don't mind the wonky vertical lines.:O I seriously couldn't draw a straight line to save my life. *Shame*

Hi Iori,

you said you´ve been using reference drawing. I´m not sure if this is a good way to learn except for rendering practise. I think it´s better - beside lifedrawing of course - to take photos as a reference. With reference from paintings/drawings there´s a danger that you´re repeating failures and problems the artist has put in the drawing. Maybe this failures are voluntary to underline something or for developing a style (I remember a portrait Dürer made) or it may be involuntary out of different reasons.

There should be a link somewhere around with a site with lots of poses (in doubt ask Davi, he´s the Lord of the Links ;)) where there should be a pose like this.

Have a look with her upper left arm - I think the anatomy is kind of wrong, especially the triceps. The rendering of the body is good here you´re on the right way. Don´t forget the feet - like many others I myself tend to lose them quite often ;).

Thanks for the reply Fipse! I really appreicate it.

About what I said, I think I ment reference photo. I have the link :
http://www.netaxs.com/~asya/photo/f38.jpg

But I really appreicate your advice alot. Its very good advice.
You would think someone who speaks mainly english would get it right more often.*Shame* :P Im really sorry bout that.

I agree the upper arm seems off, I was having difficulties with that whole area to be honest. I couldn't get it right. Its very stiff too...

Hehe Ill make sure to add the feet in as well. I hate doing them, but I guess practice makes perfect.

July 27th, 2003, 02:55 PM
Hey Iiori,

those perspective sketches look good. good idea to put many boxes in different angles in one place, that's good for practicing to "feel" the vp's. did you try to move the horizon line above or below your objects, though? or tried to add a third vanishing point (very nice for getting that "bird perspective" effect). just some thoughts if you want to try some more perspective stuff.

the drawing from reference looks sexy :)
where's it from?
can't see any wrong with it, except for the thing with her arm
fipse already mentioned and maybe with the fact that there's a strong contrast between hard outlines and very soft shading. other than that, though, it's really sweet...

Iiori
July 28th, 2003, 12:02 AM

I tried some more Perspective ones like you said. I can't quiet get the 3rd point in there right. -O-

Jeff: I'm glad you like the females, I agree they are a bit cartoony, but I want to try other things with poses and more dynamic poses. Great Reference sites buried in this place. ^^

nice stuff. watch your smudging though. ..you are sticking mainly to light/middle grays in your pencil drawings because of the smudging. dont be affraid to go in with a pencil afterwards and through in some hatching and such. some of the perspective drawings are off, but youll get it eventually. good to see that youre studying anatomy. ..try drawing some of the muscle structures also. .i know that helped me with my anatomy. keep it up

golgari
July 28th, 2003, 04:08 PM
yeah, that was what i meant. some lines look a little strange, but i think that's only because of the freehand-stroking....
i recently focused on perspective a bit, too, since i got the feeling that it's pretty important if you really want to get down drawings with a volume-feeling to them, and not only flat stuff. i found out that there are a lot of things that the normal "perspective tutorials" don't mention at all...
as a general help, keep this in mind:
all lines which go away from you tend to vanish towards a vanishing point, normally. the only reason you have parallels at all in some cases is that the vanishing point for them is extremely far away and therefore their vanishing is almost unnoticable - so you draw them as parallels. uhm. don't know if one could understand that. if not, just ask ;)

the body studies look quite good. you seem to have problems with putting the body into 3 dimensions, though.
(the 3/4 view looks strange). i'm struggling with this at the moment, too. i think the best way to get this down correctly is to simplify the shapes of the body and draw them via perspective construction first - which is pretty hard work - or to just study more 3dimensional anatomy drawings / photographs/ models, in order to get a feel for that.

oh, and keep that avatar. it's nice :)

Metalwings: Thanks, for the comment. ^^ I'll try that and add it in my next update. For sure the cross hatching. I'll be sure to get to muscle structures too once I get this perspective drawing people thing.(Its kicking my ass at the moment :O) After you guys give me the thumbs up on that, Ill be sure to do bunches of pages of them. ^^

Golgari: Thanks for the comment too. ^^ I just started today doing a bunch of bodies in the way I think you said to do it. My host is acting up so I can't update with new stuff, but you'll see a lot of them if I keep going with this. I think its working, haha. Thanks again.

I don't have anything new, but erm....I'll update some older stuff. I found this on my host while I was cleaning it out.

I see a lot of the problems, isn't it true that the foot is suppose to be as big as the head or close to? Also the hands should be bigger on this one. It was a statue that my mother has in her garden, never got around to fixing it up..

This one, is just a quick thing I did from a DA stock photo I liked.

This one, the acutal sketch hasn't changed since my sister took it for some odd reason, weirdo..Oo.. I just got bored last night and wanted to use it for the other site thingy. So I threw on some color.

Some nice stuff in here!

Your shading seems to be pretty good, and the anatomy keeps getting better.

I think beneath working on structures and bones, etc. practising what you've learned would also be a good thing. As an example; If you learned about the two main bones of the leg (yeah, don't beat me for reducing the leg to two main bones ;) ) practice those two bones in many sketches. Draw them in every way you can, try to draw em in a sitting pose, kneeling, etc. Everything that crosses your mind. Maybe this is sort of a shitty advice (I'm actually "lesser" pro than you are), but it works for me, to repeat (and repeat and repeat and repeat) what i've learned... Might as well be, that you do a lot of these repeating sketches without posting em, if so... forget me and my name and everything i've said. :)

Anyways. Keep going, you're doin well!

i would suggest doing some blind contour drawings and some really expressive charcoal drawings (from life). these techniques can really boost your drawing ability. ..even if it doesnt seem like they would. blind contours help you to "see" more accurately, and charcoal helps a lot with values and tightening your pencil drawings. these may seem like odd suggestions, but they work. keep it up and i look forward to your next update

Iiori,

looking back at your first posts, I can see that your work is progressing nicely. Metalwinds' suggestion of doing blind contour drawings is a great one; I've been a little out of practice lately, so I've started doing some blind contours, and it really helps you to see the object you're drawing.
Also, (excuse me if someone has already made this comment), but a lot of your drawings are "flat"; not in volume, but because they're straight-from-the-front or from-the-side angles; these types of drawing are probably easier to do, but you'll notice more improvement in your own work by doing more 3/4 angle drawings, which are more challenging.
Keep up the great work!

metaphysiks
August 2nd, 2003, 01:49 PM
iiori that is it. the pages with the anatomy in perspective is exactly what i was talking about. learn to draw every part of the body in perspective and it will help you come up with really cool poses and they will be correct. also on that page u constructed the body with rectangle in 3-d. that was great for many reasons. you were allowing yourself to see teh basic sstructure and then build on top of it. also you can see how the big parts of the body twist and turn on an axis. when using these shapes your drawings are very full of volume and you proportions are more correct. do many many more of those pages. also try using that technique on some very fast drawings from life. 10 maybe 20 seconds.

Hi guys.

Thanks for the comments killing.people. antihero

metalwinds: I did a lot of blind Contour drawings like you said. Wow they are hard, but fun. I sorta liked this one so I thought I would post it. I think this one resembles the things I was drawing the most.

I also did a few charcoal drawings as well, but haha Id rather not show them. :o

Blackwell: Thanks for the comment.^^ I agree with you. I am trying to do more 3d drawings and just strange poses. If I get down well the barrel wedge thing I have going on I think it will help me do less flat people.

endregan: Thank you. I'm glad you think so. :D

golgari: I used references for all of those drawings I believe. There are som great sites burried in this forum in the reference part.

About the boxes, I draw the top barrel, Well there they aren't shown as that but in the ones I'm posting now it will be. SO I draw the torso first then the bottom box. Then the arms and legs then head.:) weird no?

ac_osorio: Thanks. I really appreiate that comming from you. ^^

http://membres.lycos.fr/vbcserenity/banner/sk20443.jpg

Any ideas for things to add or to be done differently would really help.

do not add a mask. if you think that you cannot pull the face off, then draw a lot of faces. because you told us the reasoning for putting the mask we are now aware of your insecurities but honestly even without telling us we would figure it out. the biggest mistake i think you could be making at your stage of development would be to shy away from improving. just go for the face, if you nail it great, but if not who cares. everyone does bad drawings. some of the best advice i have recieved (thanks stephenc) is to not worry about the outcome of the drawing but to just learn from every drawing. even the worst outcomes teach you something. i know you are plenty capable of drawing the face. so do it!!
good luck

my advice when sketching: go crazy.

forget you're drawing on paper...forget you're drawing at all. Just start laying things down quickly... if its not completely accurate the first pass then you can get it again later..stay loose!

hey iiori, you're advancing well.
the chest and the arms look really good. i like that pose of the arms, that must have been pretty hard to draw.
however, her trousers look strange. think of gravity!
her right trouser should fall down on her leg instead of the leg being at the lower end of the trouser...shouldn't it?
other than that, i'm with metaphysiks. don't draw a mask, try to draw a face. after all, learning is why we're all posting here, isn't it?

rubygenesis

i see progress Iiori, dynamic figure drawing by hogarth is a good book. keep in mind how the skin reacts where the body bends ^^
dont stop.

Atmospheria
August 18th, 2003, 06:24 AM
You show some progress Iiori....Try to pay more attention to the anatomy...by the way, the most important parts of the body are head, hands and feet...don't forget this..If you do these parts well your drawing will look much much better. Try to study hands and feet, at the and you can study head, after that comes the expressions. But it's early for you...As i said, the three parts "head, hands, feet" Make them your god!
Draw everyday...push it hard...! :)

Iiori
August 18th, 2003, 01:26 PM
Atmospheria : ^^ thanks. I really need to work on everything, especially those three parts. I am working on them, though not enough. Ill make sure in my next update to have a lo of hand and feet sketches. :D

rubygenesis: Yup thats the book. ^^ Very handy I think. I find it hard to come up with poses out of my head, so I use it a lot for reference. Skin , Hmm Ill try though Im not sure exactally what you mean. I do but I don't. :O

golgari: Haha you make a point. Damn that thing called Gravity. Thanks for pointing that out though. ^^ Ill remember to take that into consideration.

Gray: thanks Man ^^

Hunger_Artist: Glad to see you back! Crazy, Ill try that too. I notice I am kinda to erm..not tight but not loose with the pencil. Ill get some looser sketches in my next update too.

metaphysiks: ^^' You do have great points there, I have been working with the face. I'll just keep trying to get it right until I do. Thanks for the comment. ^^

Not much of an update right now, Im trying to get my new computer set up.

Heres a quick sketch I wanted to shade, but I haven't had time. Its for that site, Game over was the topic. I wanted to make a goblin or something eating the heros hand.

http://membres.lycos.fr/vbcserenity/banner/sg6.jpg

This is some quick Volleyball sketches.

golgari
August 18th, 2003, 01:39 PM
ahahhah, that goblin's really cool. very nice idea for a game-over-screen =)
i somehow like the shading you did. it looks not that realistic since it's too smooth for organic things, i think (it reminds me of metal-like, shiny structures), but for that goblin it's quite alright. very nice shading on the eyes. my only critic would be the hero's hand, since it's very simplified and block-like. but it doesn't detract from the piece that much here.

the volleyball sketches look good, too. i don't like that smudged shading there, but that may be just me. the poses are very good. also, the face, although not that deeply-detailled looks good on that level :)

I was talked into posting these. I want to make sure you all know that the first ones I posted were from references from other artists. That was the assignment. I can't stress that enough. I wasn't sure who each artist is, but if you know, Id love to know. If I can find the originals that would be great too. I've looked but I can't find them anymore.

This was an suppose to be anime/cartoon turned into more realistic. Mostly used my fingers, and they are all oil paints.
I made up the cloud backround, face and hair. The clothes were from the anime person.
http://membres.lycos.fr/vbcserenity/banner/comming.jpg

This one Id really like to find out who rendered it since I loved the original. If you guys know please let me know so I can thank them for doing such a pretty piece. I just tried to get the same effect of glow in this one.
http://membres.lycos.fr/vbcserenity/banner/space.jpg

Again these are used from reference to other artists

These next two are my own ideas. You can tell the difference, but Id like to make the ideas as good as the ones I used references on. I probably wont use other artists work again since It feels so wrong.

metalwinds
September 2nd, 2003, 10:20 AM
other than the clouds, your pics generally lack contrast. there arent any dark darks or light lights. dont be scared to throw down values and get expressive with the painting, thats how you learn. watch the spacial relationship between foreground and backround. keep painting cuz its the only way theyll get better. also, on a side note, painting with your fingers generally isnt recommended because the chemicals in the oil paints sink into your pores and cause problems later in life. .. .and you cant get the kind of details with your fingers like you do with a brush.

agreed, this rocks. the texture work has improved a lot, it looks really good, especially on the chain. the only thing which bothers me a little bit is the eye, you exaggerated the ball-like shape of the eye a bit too much in my opinion.
anyway, i think it's better to overdo this a bit at the beginning than to flatten it down first....

I could watch CB all day. ^^ Though it does damper other shows since you can't help but compare.

I haven't done any chibi mascots before and Im not sure this is right for a model sheet:O BUT I tried. I gotta do some more of the side view. I had a hard time with that one.

why are they looking at me, and why are they wearing so little clothing?

not that thats a bad thing.. but your characters seem a little artificial right now. Maybe get two friends to pose in the way you want and let them realize the context of the pose (i.e. you are naked inside of a volcano). Take a picture of that, mabey with the lighting pre-positoned and use if for ref and you should get interesting results.. just an idea!

Hehe Thanks Hunger Artist, I admit theres really no concept behind this picture, well not yet. I'd love to do what you suggested, but all the friends willing to pose for me are guys... Hmmm.. I could try giving the characters sex changes. I agree with you that they are artificial. Im hoping when I get working on the face that might help a little bit.
This piece is totally a learning process.

Well I should update on it then. I've been busy with college visit type things so not to much has gotten done on it. Still haven't worked on the faces and the lighting still needs alot of work. Haha Eventually I hope to get it okay. ^^

HI Iori,

just wanted to tell that you´re getting better all the time. Especially your last post shows good developments in different areas. I personally like most the last pic (the guy with the hat). Nice to see you improving!

Here are a few doodles. Nothings really refined, and I should go back and tighten them up. I probably will later.

Its good that you are testing out your tablet and it seems like you have control over it.

I can tell using reference is helping you.. dont stop! in school they will likely make you do lots and lots of figure drawings.. so get a head start now and start drawing more from life!

If you dont love the sketch, or get excited thinking about where it could go as a finished work, dont bother finishing(but do try again!). I like that you are doing DSGS, too :D.

Lots of doodles, I can see a pretty good progression along this page. Awesome! your lighting and color is for sure getting really better. Your line quality is also improving.

I like that gothik looking face.. its simple and a good use of light dark contrast.. also like the orange/blue you are working with.

For me women are entertaining to draw...but it is also fine to draw the male figure too if you are inclined.

when constructing the figure, here are some things to try:

-invent your own version of a skeleton that makes sense to you

-divide the edges into different faces, like polygons..that way the lighting transitions wont have to be as smooth

nice work iiori. im glad that i inspired you to start painting digitaly from reference....its really helped me a lot. my first suggestion would be to get different reference. i have found that pictures of supermodels and such arent the best source for reference. the tones and values all seem to be obscure in one way or another, so i chose to get my reference from other sources (domai, hegre, and met-art). if youre interested, go to the reference forum and choose the 18+ nude reference thread........theres a lot of great stuff on there. other than that, just keep at it...make sure to do at least one every day. also, pay close attention to the colors in the pic.........ive found out and learned a lot since i first started doing them. keep it up

Metalwinds: Thanks ^^ I can tell you have improved loads since we last saw you color images. I was really impressed.
Thanks for the tips. Ill try out some references from here and Correct proportion, they seem to have good ones too. Ive been doing them everyday, but Im just posting the ones that came out decent.:P I am having a bit of trouble with a b&W guy at the moment, for some reason its harder, haha.

Hunger_Artist: Thanks. I am actually working on a guy right now, though hes being a pain haha. Ill try doing what you told me. I think it will really help.

Today I did some reference drawings of faces. Figured I should focus on one thing a day. Ill post up the rest later. ^^

Todays studys . First two References used. Ya know I got a lot of looks for buying Sports Illustrated Swim Suit edition at school. Tsk tsk, Ill be referencing it for a while. Gotta keep working on the figures, ^^ Things are comming easier.

http://solaceape.fataldreamscape.com/images/Picture-631.jpg

The picture itself was kinda boring, so I added a dragon Half touch to it. ^^ Ouch with feet though. Kinda liked the suit she had on so I left it. Lots of the suits in SI are pretty cool, even though the models aren't really wearing them.

Color study, I didnt want to use the mag for the coloring, just seeing how it would comeout with my own coloring. ^^
