First off, congrats to Bendragon for his win on challenge #18!

The Rules:
Anyone ages 13-19 may submit an entry at any time before the deadline, and any medium (sans photograghy) is allowed.
Your entry may include a brief description if you like.
Please host your image on a remote image-hosting site instead of uploading it to the CA server. This makes it much easier to transfer it to the poll thread.

The Topic:
Environment/Scene: 8th Wonder of the Ancient World
For those of you unfamiliar with the other 7 wonders, read this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven_Wonders_of_the_World
Your goal into this challenge is to depict an architectural marvel along the lines of the 7 Wonders, though one supposedly lost to memory thousands of years ago. Descriptions are not necessary, but I think it would interesting to do some research for this and base your entries on real historical civilizations.

Thanks to Narmo for the topic, and another thanks to him for setting up a topic thread. I was hesitant to make one myself because I was unsure if non-challenge threads were allowed in the dome, but it seems to be working fine so far. :)

The Deadline:
Friday, November 24 at midnight PST
Following the recent slump in participation, I'm raising the challenge back to 2 weeks long per topic; hopefully this way more people will be able to find the time to finish an entry between schoolwork. Good luck to all, and let's see lots of entries!

Architecture = boredome!:perv: :^^:

I'll probably skip that one, too far from my zones of interest, but good luck to all of the participants! :)

Architecture = boredome!:perv: :^^:

Well it doesn't necessarily have to be a building, it could be anything man-made, really. After all, the Colossus of Rhodes was one of the 7 wonders and it was a giant statue.

Yay for comparative civilizations class! To bad we've only just finnished Mesopotamia (Sumer, Assyria, Babylon, Chapel), and only just started Egypt. Still, this stuff holds a speacial place in my heart, unlike environment drawings which in a way, this kinda is.
*muddels around some civilizations*
Hmm, maya has always been cool. China could be neat. Maybe some sort of massive totem pole for Native Americans. Hmm.. right now my mind is swarming most with Mayan civilization. I even did mayan heriroglyphs for my halloween pumpkins. *le sigh* If only my computer didn't have colour problems.. Oh well, I feel like giving it a go anyway.

Story-
By far the most mysterious wonder of the world, the Egg of Amazonia is a glowing, perfectly smooth egg with no known purpose. It's deep into the Amazon Rainforest and has confused scientists and tourists across the world. It is protected with a natural reserve, so it's impossible and illegal to touch or experiment from it. In the near future, however, scientists hope for a way to analyze it without the need of contact. This is still under development, and might be finished by the year 2031.
For now, it remains a total mystery.

Here's my idea; it's a reconstruction of the moon temple built by the Atlantians thousands of years ago. Moon worship was central to Atlantian religion, as they were the first peoples to realize that the changing phases of the moon affected the tide, and by extension the quality of their vital fishing industry.

When the moon was full in the sky, hundreds of Atlantians would gather on the temple floor and raise their arms in worship to the image of the moon reflected to them by the mirror. A priest would conduct rites before it on the naos, sectioned off from common people by a large gate. The mirror itself is made of bronze and gold and is supported by massive statues of the moon Goddess.

EDIT: This will probably be my final, since I was caught up with REAL finals all week and am about to roll straight through thanksgiving into my first day of work. Ugh. There's a lot I wanted to do with this, but this is the best I've got for now.

Hopefully I can enter a few more of these with the three months I've got left before I hit the big 2-0.

Do it have to be a wonder of the greek world?? Because they actually made the list of the 7 world wonders, or could I make a building of an asian culture??

Narmo
November 13th, 2006, 12:44 PM
I think it could be something else than a greek wonder, since the world was as big as we now it today: there is no reason for keep it greek. You can immagine that if the list-writer has known your asian wonder, he would have put it in his list. For example.

yungks.ae => great picture ! I love the mythological tuch :)

Final. Your actually seeing the base of the wonder which is this three tower supported super tower that these ancient Chinese dudes built as far as they could into the sky before the workers started dieing from lack of oxygen.
The tower is meant for an ancient god who lost his love at sea and commanded that a tower be built tall enough that he could look for her across the ocean. The mofo's that are heading to the tower are going to take the long journey up the spiral stair case to go to pray at the top. Maybe they have some sort of base jumping ritual once they reach the top aswell, that'd be sweet.

Do it have to be a wonder of the greek world??

No, it can be from any culture, just as long as it's believably ancient.

Sloth - Perspective issues aside.. where's the wonder? No offense, but it looks to me like a pretty standard building. Unless the structure in the distance is supposed to be the wonder, in which case I think it could use more focus. :S

Probably my first pic close to scenery done completley with mouse on photoshop. Would be more comfortable with pencil lines first but scanner not working! Perhaps not my most creative.

An anciant sleeping volcano has been found close to the coasts of newzealand. Its notable feature a massive statue of unkown origin a new wonder of our world. it's technology seems way beyound its time as it has a built in waterfall that seems to run by hiden mechanics.
Its emerald eyed dragon seems to be the shape of some god of the ancient race that sculptured it or does it mean that dragons once flew the pacific?

Woow Evil Sloth, that's really nice :xpld: The mood is here, and that's the most important part maybe.

Here's my very very first sketch, the white thing is going -if I succeed- to be a tibetan temple. There are some stairs under the tree shadow. The background will be moutain from the Himalaya's. The green thing will became a great forest, I hope :p. I've been trying some of the photoshop brushes, but.. dunno, can't do anything with.

EDITED: WIP version there: http://narmorhin.free.fr/illus/TCH/8th%20wonder/wip/wip-gif-ptit.gif

Here is my F I N A L:

The Himalayas used to host the biggest boudhist temple ever built. It had a 5,5 meters gong wich could be hearing from about 11 km arounds, its echoes resounding all over the nearest valleys !
It disappeared about the 2nd century BC because of violent earthquakes, but the Gong itself still remains, found by L.B. Jefferson (1673-74): it's nowadays one of the masterpieces of the Potola temple.

Gate of the Gods:

Few ever saw the marvel, for few had the courage to search for it in this world of many dangers. It was said that the gate led to the land of the Gods and whoever passed through it would become a god themselves. But it was not nearly as simple as the beast that guarded the gate must first be defeated.
The gate seemed to stretch into the heavens and the beast that guarded it, a hundred foot of pure muscle and ferocity to contend with. Good luck travelers i do not envy you.

Better be some awfully fantastic pimping you've got planned. Right now my eyes get caught up big time by all the little strokes in the lillies and the hut. The "wonder" is actually the last place my eyes are drawn.

"Nobody really knows where it came from or what it is; it just sits there, like an austere sentinel lost in contemplation. "Fallen God" of the Misty Valley they call it, the local villagers say it's the husk of an ancient deity, though the archaeologists think it was probably a shrine build millenia ago by some lost civilization. It's inner structure remains a mystery, and some have even suggested it may have once moved. Whatever it is, the only thing known for certain is that it shall continue to slumber dutifully."

No explanations=Lame. This is concept art people, half the work is the idea behind your piece!

Temple of the sky

"Somewhere high in the mountains, around present day Pakistan and Iran a Ziggurat like structure was build, its was a far more simpler design than a common ziggurat, but its massive size made up for its "beauty". It took 300 years to build this wonder. Carved into the mountain side, built from rocks and mud. And coated with a slightly reflective blue paint, this temple over looks its people like a looming god. Every year a huge number of people make a dangerous journey to this temple to worship their god who is said to live there."

"Recent discovery suggest that the placement of the structure was the reason it fell. Heavy winds weakened the temple's structure and the material it was made with, over-time, crumbled. All that's left of this once amazing wonder is its ruined towers, and its foundation. Which cant be recognizable from a natural flat plain.

btw the rocky mountain on the far top right, for me it looks too realistic, but let me assure you its not photography, i painted it, somehow, :O

Hey I got this contribution here...:( Im not happy at all with it. Just like the legs a little bit, the leftone. Took me like 2,5 hours. And yeah the sketchy, scratchy style is totally deliberate so this is no WIP. Here it goes anyways.

http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/1150/lookslikeshitef2.jpg
Some concept then?:
Unlike the 7 other wonders of the world the 8'th is a mobile one. Made from the core metal of earth by the Khasers 2000 years before christ it is mention in greek myth. The greeks described it as the "indestructable evil". A giant man emerging from the very earth, destroying everything in its path. Anyone who had controll over it would rule the world. It was said that its mind were posessable. I assume they ment that this giant robot is steared from its "head"... It is said that this "indestructable evil" is what really won the battle of troy. That one man managed to posess its mind and thus gaining incredible power. The iron giant then supposibely returned to its resting plase below ground.

EDIT
Hahah...

Edit: Description

The Temple of Life. This great pyramid was crated in the image of a snake by the mayan people. It is said that withing it's coils it protects the fountain of youth and life. Many have sought it out and mistaken it's waterfalls running parralel outside it to be the legendary springs, but were gravely disapointed as it is home to a parasite with no known cure. To find the true key to everlasting youth one must travel deep into the serpants belly, but the it is the prize that the mayan never intended to be accessible to just anyone, numerous curses are said to have been placed on it's walls, among other dangers.

hey folks... what Im seeing here is aome really good ideas. Many of them would be improoved as environments by more atmophereic perpective, This is where the distance is lighter than the foreground ususally your colors would become less saturated as theyt are obscured by the air (yes air is solid). even heng.s (which i like the quality of a lot) could seem like a more real space if the the line qualkity got thinner in the distance.... ink is tricky, bu tit can be done.
which makes it harde for sloth to get the focus on to the temple in the back of his image...
be wary of burn and dodge as a way to get lighter and darker, you'll end up with a unfocussed fuzzy image.
Dile , your colouring is looking great, you need to punch the value back into it...
keep em coming !
