so grab youre partners hand and when we get inside the museum were going to use our "quiet voices"
From the MET
This started out as a storyboard assignment for myself so i could have an example to show potential clients
but its too detailed i think for a story board--more pen and ink illustrion narrative--
i should have made the shots more varied--theres too many "medium" shots
Its not exactly a stunning example of pictorial narrative either
DOH!
any feedback appreciated

Why is the backpack colored blue and the rest black and white?

i think your own point on medium shots is correct, but man i like the way you draw. these have life in them. perhaps you could vary the camera angle a bit as well, up, down, in front as well as close, medium and far, but you already said that. i like the spot of blue to help us follow through the action but it does need to have some kind of meaning. in this case we are asking what is he carrying in the backpack, a bomb? i think that if his shirt or hat were color instead we may not have the same needs to place importance on the object.
now that i look at it again it appears that we are following behind with our own video camera. you definitely need to get out side of that camera angle.
love the drawing. very nice feeling and handling of busy scenes.

tyboogie, this is definitely excellent. it's live, nervous.
also, your drawing style fits perfectly in this sort of rendering.
bravo!

this is something you don't see evry day.
the one with the japanese armor and the one just to its right are my favs.
your line work has a nice sense of space, but maybee you could improve the pics by adding some depth of field. or using more greytones in the bg.
my only real problem is that there are no orcs....

This is great. I surely also get the feeling as if I was stalking the guy with the blue backpack. :)
very well done!

Hehe I also thought he was carrying a bomb in his backpack. Symptom of our times eh ?
I really like the immense tension you created, as Sparth already noticed it's all very nervous as if something is about to happen.

I'm working on a similar project right now, so this one was exciting to see.
i agree with your own assesment of the amount of medium shots used. but i like the detail level .... keeps the eyes moving. the only thing i would have changes is maybe a bit of a brighter colour to the backpack so the back pack wielding guy is more readily found.
unless you are going for a "wheres waldo apporach" ? ;)
fantastic stuff.

Yes! Excellent! And so accurate too. Very nice Ty. Oh how many times I have walked those paths.
I say this is a great sample for a storyboard. Nothing wrong with it at all.
Keep it up!

tyboogie-
i dig your style on these, and I don't think they are "too detailed." Have you seen some of the boards from the Lost World movies? some of those are full color, dynamic lighting, and anything else the director may want to see. Your use of the blue really helps keep tabs on your character, which really helps. One thing I would add to your boards that has helped me with clients in the past is to give an idea of camera motion, if any, and other types of motion. Clients (at least the ones I have worked with) have reacted real positive with arrows showing a direction of action. It helps put them into the action a bit better.
just 2 cents from me.

WOW--thanks guys!!
mtw--so teh main character wouldnt get lost in teh crowds visually
Jon--thanks for the thorough response. All good points--im not sure why i subconsciously chose to have all the shots behind him--for my next story board i will most definitely free myself from this position. Great point about the blue back pack gaining narrative/context importance --as opposed to just being a visual color seperating scheme. Its Always nice to hear from an artist you look up to--glad you like the drawings!!
Sparthicus--well im glad your feeling em'! Im just trying to learn how to draw in dimension--im just trying to be like you!
RM--heheheh--yea maybe an orc attacking the obnoxious guards who get bored and cranky--interesting points about teh depth of field and mid-tones--thx bro
boom--thanks--hopefully i didnt make you uncomfortable
Kaini--cool-glad you got more out of it than i intended--hehehe
Davi--good idea--ill be back
cire--thank you cire
blue--more to come thank you
lono--aww youve been in Tx too long havent you?--thanks duuude
Cinsev--thx mindcandy--appreciate the encouragement
mutton--thanks bro--yea everytime i got to the met i feel liek such an idiot for not going more often--one of the coolest places on the planet
afro--well i just dont think anyone would want to pay for this much detail--time is money they say--good point on teh arrows--back to the drawing board!!--thanks
thanks again peeples
youve all been blessed!! kapow!!

Ty - Actually I have a question: did you do these on-site, while standing in those places, or did you take pics as reference? Either way they are impressive, I was just curious.

yeah that's nice work, found my eyes filling in the missing frames, my memory of it reads like an animation (which I guess is the point)
well done

These are great! I love the feeling of movement. Although I also love the detail, I think you're right in saying they're too detailed for a storyboard.
My other crits are what you yourself and a few others have already mentioned.

HOLY CRAP BATMAN!! :ep:
I love your work dude. Great boards. Excellent idea of the color on the backpack.Absolutely love this kind of inking style. I wish I could pull it off. So much energy and life...reminds me of Guy Davis or Paul Pope...2 of my favorite comic book artists.
Great work dude....and please post some more stuff!!

My favorite work Guy Davis has done is his work on The Marquis. Don't know if he has a site though.
