View Full Version : DSG 1145: Weirdness: LARVA BABY IN HIS "SANDCASTLE" NEST

[ Although I say "baby", I'm not picturing something that's helpless and unable to move about... ]

[ I'm actually picturing something that has very baby-like body ratios, but that is physically active/mobile enough to build or otherwise produce whatever this "sandcastle" is. ]

[ ...Which brings up the possibility that the sandcastle might be the result of creative intelligent intent, or it might just be the interesting looking by-product of some strange waste excretion process. ]

[ Or a combination of the two? ]

[ :teeth: ]

Aye William, I'd maybe change the topic to "Larva baby in IT'S Sandcastle Nest." Gender can mean the difference between barbiedolls and action figures - you never know.

Beyond that - good to see you'll be able to sketch again.

Yikes!!! :O I did an image search on Google with "larva" and it returned this image. The web page is in a language I can't read but, the pictures tell the whole story.

GreyGhost. Oh man, I saw one of those on Discovery where this woman had one in her skull. Getting that little fucker out was one of the most disturbing things I've ever seen.

The Castle Wasp female will build an elaborate structure on a sandy beach, Place a paralayed insect in it's center, and lay it's egg inside. Several weeks later, if it was undisturbed, the Larva will emerge, and crawl it's way to the ocean.

Thanks GreyGhost for disrupting productivity at my office :)
Here's my contribution, sadly I couldn't quite get into the larva thing after GG's post, but I got the baby.

Hello, long time lurker trying to dig in to improving. Yea it's really obvious I have no clue on this things true anatomy and I just hid it with the cave thing he resides in. Ah well... This took about an hour. Really nice work Sandworm, love the color transitions in the sand and water.

Thanks Nibs! For that I used the Dry Media brush set in Photoshop, specifically the Charcoal Flat brush, set to 90% opacity. It's great for creating light texture and slight color variation, while laying down color across a large area. I've just discovered this brush, and with it I've made my last two paintings in about 4 hours each.
I've really been trying hard to shorten my painting time lately, in the past I would have spent a whole day on an image like this.

Recycle the larvas and pray for tomorrow.

Sandworm - I think you just defined your user name through artwork.

Anyone got any suggestions for making the sand (specifically on the castle) look a little more realistic? My computer locked up last night at 2am, so I stopped there, but I'd like to touch up the sand a bit.

I would suggest a cream-crust coating over the castle. Gaps and crumbles in the ground would also bring out the realer side of beach kingdoms.

Haha fun pics!

He's the ugly black sheep of the larva family. Content with building his "castles", they let him be.

Thanks, Yeah I'm planning on entering this next COW and putting a little more time into it than the last one I entered.
