HI there. Not a bad way to start off a SB thread by a long shot. My fav's the colour portrait (oils?) Not so hot on the robotic dog thing, looks too convoluted (if that's the word.)

Nice mechanical stuff and the painting is very pretty.
I like the Lara Croft one even thought it's unfinished, cause you downsized her boobs substantially, and she looks like an actual (although badass) person! Woo.

that's an absolutely gorgeous painting, and the lara croft piece has a fantastic softness to the rendering. I also really like seeing how you worked through the robotic piece in layers.
keep it up man! The workshop will be a blast for you.

Thanks everyone for the comments. I haven't figured out how to put comments under each image...grrr. The painting above is 8x10 oil on panel study of a girl I was able to bribe into sitting for me. The Lara Croft drawing is really old and has gotten quite damaged over the years.
Below are some more recent life drawing/painting from 10 & 20 minute poses plus a copy after zorn:

Thanks Steen.
The sculpts are from 4 years ago...damn I miss sculpting. My entire stash of clay have all dried on me, except the WED Clay which is awesome stuff (stands for Walter E. Disney clay).
Do you recognize the first painting above - Girl named Alex from Eckerd figuredrawing?

Weird, attachments aren't working the same way as in the Insomania pics thread so the captions don't work.
Below are A couple sketches from Insomania I was happy with:
2 min sketch of Kevin Llewellyn, sketch of model.
I just made myself a 6x8 paintbox so I have something small to take to the next workshop :)
I'm so broke from Insomania I can't buy any gifts so I'm giving art.
Christmas presents:

Hey man! Nice stuff you got here. I seem to remember seeing your sketchbook open somewhere at the workshop. Wonderful sculptures.
I've got a couple of crits for you at the moment.
Pay close attention to basic 3 dimensional forms. Your portraits and renderings have a good feel and likeness to them but they lack some depth.
For painting my favorite quote is this one "Every mark has perspective" meaning every brush stroke should build the form of the object. The direction, length, and width of each stroke matter. Try looking and thinking about each stroke 10 times as long as it takes to put it down. Try to accomplish as much as possible with each stroke. How can I use one stroke instead of 10 to convey my ideas? Each stroke has a purpose and should be charged with meaning. Take another look at Hussar's stuff. Every stroke and every shape in his Alla Primas serve a purpose (and they all relate to eachother on top, that guy is sick!).
I'm a pallete dork so I'd like to know what the theory behind yours is if you don't mind. I noticed one of your drawings is from Art Center. Are you a student there?
That doggy is bad ass. By far my favorite!
Keep it up! I'm so happy to see another Oil Painter on here!

January 30th, 2007, 03:26 PM
I find myself in the lowly position to apologize for not updating more frequently. Surely that was not how I intended this sketchbook to go. I have works ready to post, but just haven't photographed them...mostly sketches that I want to bring to more of a finished version. Work has been killing me lately (no I don't work in the art industry...yet), and getting up at 4AM every morning really saps up my creative energy. Not much of an excuse, but it's what ails me right now.
Dtran-You inspire me, bro. I will post more.

Bloody hell roomy those paintings are great! I should have picked your brains while I had the chance. Those sculpts are coming along nicley too.
I dont know much about sculpting but do you use a armature (that the right word?) It might help give some of your characters more structure. Hope you keep us up to date :)
escape2mars
January 30th, 2007, 07:47 PM
Rich, concerning armature: I hate it! Most of my sculpts (at least the concept ones) are done in earth clay. It is very fast. In fact the longest one took me three hours. I cannot use armature with earth clays, because they'll crack as they dry around the armature. That's why you only see me sculpting busts in earthclay (white earthenwhere to be exact). The best earth clay to use is WED clay, but the shipping costs more than the clay itself!
The SuperSculpey sculpture (the only sculpt in pink) does have an armature. I used an air-hardening water based clay for the armature. Then I used wire for the arms which were epoxied into place before sculpting over them. If you look closely, you can see that over time, the supersculpey has begun to crack around the massive armature beneath. If I could, I would never use armature as I change my mind a lot as I sculpt. But let's be realistic. For full body sculpts with arms and legs, using an armature is inevitable. I'll be posting a new sculpt soon. It's a bust again in water clay...no armature of course

Dosadi, I've been meaning to reply to you coz I'm a palette freak too :) I'm pretty new to oil paint so I'm still trying to figure out my palette. Currently my palette is broken down to a (1) gamut palette of brilliant warm & cool primaries, (2) convenience colors, and (3) premixed colors which are mixed from the "gamut" and "convenience" pigments as needed.
Gamut: CadYellowPale, CadYellowDeep, CadRed, PermanentRose, UltramarineDeep, and CeruleanBlue.
Convenience: YellowOchrePale, TransparentOxideRed, and Viridian.
Premixed: "RawUmber", "TeraRosa/VenetianRed", "Alizarin", and "IvoryBlack".
When plein air painting I'll replace CadYellowPale with CadLemon and CeruleanBlue with PhthaloBlue.
I typically arrange them in hue as in this pic.
89536
I usually treat my "RawUmber" and "IvoryBlack" as warm and cool greys. I try to use only 2 or 3 'pigments' for any mixture. This can be visualized on the palette as lines or triangles. It helps me recognize which mixtures I use a lot.
Hope some of that was of some use.

So, okay. After almost 2 years of sparse drawing and painting, I have decided to finally start posting again. Two weeks ago, I started drawing again, but this time only digital. I'm still getting used to the wacom, but after I decided to ditch the idea of buying a cintique, I had no choice. No more traditional. Everything is started and finished in the computer. I am also learning painterX as I go along.
452793
This was started to familiarize myself with the wacom and the program. Don't even remember which brushes I used.
452794
I started this sketch just for fun, but then decided to colour it with the airbrush tool. Also first time to use layers.
Blue Severin
September 2nd, 2008, 02:55 AM
sweet, though I have a lot of fun with tradigital, as my pencil sketches sometimes have more life to em than wacom line work, not to mention scanned textures I use and stuff like that. Even though I like to draw cool shit (i.e. robots, guns, chicks) I've been shown that the best way to learn digi is actually by painting live objects with a wacom. Just stuff to think about. Good to see you're still alive man, been a while, good luck.

the other pieces are great as well and I#m happy to see you go into digital painting too!!! looks good so far! on the last piece I think I can give you some advice, (even though you're working on a higher level than me)... the skin tones still look to monochrome.... add some other colours like blues green and reds, very slightly on the skin! this will make the colours mor vivid!!!
and thanks for visiting my sb! I hope to see you there soon and also looking foreward to your next diditals paintings :)

Of the last three, I like the aviator best. Which is funny, because the thumbnail on Facebook exaggerated the thin-ness of the character and I was going to comment on that until I saw the actual image. He's got great expression and I like the stylization. Would be interested in seeing it taken to paint.
escape2mars
April 8th, 2009, 11:43 AM
Thanks, Alicia! I didn't even notice that facebook made him thinner...hmm. After Reverie, I decided to just draw more and worry about digital painting a little less. I have to sort out my values and proportions first before worrying about colour...not that I'm going to completely ignore it. I'll take the aviator to colour eventually. Thanks for posting.
By the way, remember the discussion we had at Reverie about replies on sketchbooks? I might actually try it just to see, heehee!

A sketch I did of one of my favourite X-men, at least 15 years ago. This is done from memory. I haven't seen this character since I stopped collecting the X-men title. So this is how I remember Havoc 15 years ago.

Hey man. Just have to say that the jack nicholson is fantastic. looks real creepy and good! I would get fotoreferance though, more detailed than a paused dvd ;-) Whats up these days? cuming to the italian workshop?

Wow, I haven't posted anything in a while! I'm so tired from work, but I had to do something to put on here. So I did a quick sketch of Cyclops.

Muscari: Thanks. I often feel that the first half of my sketchbook is completely different. Truth is I'm still getting used to the digital aspect of things. There's still nothing like having real materials and paints in your hands, but the computer is much faster and less clutter....and CTRL Z, haha! Eventually I'll return to traditional media, but for now I'm still training with digital.
AlexKrill: Hey there, buddy! I haven't tried photoref with digital yet. The reason I use paused DVD is for substitute for life-drawing. I still have to use all the same skills as having a real model posing....but I don't have to pay. I will be using photoref soon though, as my sketches are quite loose and I want to start posting more "finished" stuff. Thanks for the advice, bud.

I like the Cyclops piece a lot, I also like the loose almost-watercolor direction.

Yeah, so I haven't uploaded pics in a while. Well here's one I did of Wolverine before the movie came out. Don't know why I didn't upload it before. Several more pics to upload later too.

Really like the wolverine piece. I think it captures the essence of the character with the pose and the bloodstrokes.

Thanks, Alicia. Like the Cyclops pic, this one started off as a doodle. I didn't plan it out that way, but I try not to get attatched to sketches and erase/change poses. A lot of my experience with Photoshop is still experimental. There's a lot to learn!

This is quite old now. Just never uploaded it. Inspired from a bad day at work.

Inspired from the movie obviously. And the design of the terminators is amazing! James Cameron rocks!!!

do some more color studies! i think you can go places with those bright colors of yours but you should rein them in in some areas.
here is a good resource for wacky color combos:
