View Full Version : guns advert

An older piece, these are a few guns I illustrated and compiled into a mock advertisement for a futuristic arms manufacturer. At that point in the project, the specifications called for a sense of 'realism', so I tried to find and tie together some interesting shapes in existing production and prototypical weapons.
I hope the German text means what I meant it too :-)

excellent, the "grip"-parts have this p90 or seburo look.
oh, and "hohe kapazität kastenzeitschrift" is not really correct. I assume it was "high capacity box magazine", but the translation would be sth. like "Vielschuss Box-Magazin" oder "Boxen Magazin mit hoher Ladekapazität".. its hart to translate.
what was "greller Entstörer" in english?
I could help you if you just post the original english text, the translations are a bit pointless :D
oh, and it's Automatisches Gewehr, and "Granatwerfer" not "Abschussrampe"... uhm... not your fault, was it a translation software? :D

nice designs, very p90-ish. for my taste, the grip section looks a wee bit too much like the p90.
as for the translations:
first weapon: judgins the size, this looks like a smg, that would be "maschinenpistole" in german. automatic rifle would be "schnellfeuergewehr".
grenade launcher is "granatwerfer" in street language but military official slang would be "granatgerät"
sniper gun:
sniper is "scharfschütze" in german :) (literary: sharpshooter - that is a valid term in english, too, right?)
sniper rifle therefore is "scharfschützengewehr" or "präzisionsgewehr" (precision rifle)
i am not sure about the camera part but if you mean a camera scope thing that counters bright light, so that you could aim against sunlight, e.g., i would call it "kamerazieloptik mit gegenlichtentstörer" (=camera aiming system with that thing i don't know how to call it... the counter light thing)
machine gun (nice concept... a bit like the portable gattling gun in predator)
first, it's "schwerES maschineNgewehr" ;) grammatic stuff
high capacity box magazine would be "großraum-kastenmagazin" (magazine as zeitschrift would mean the magazine like mad mag, playboy, etcetera... a box magazine like that sounds VERY strange ;))
drehkraftentstörer... ugh, you mean something that counters the reactive force of barrell drum turning, right?
hmm, yould be something like "drehmomentkontermechanik" (turning force counter mechanical system)
replace mechanik with elektronik and it is an electronical system, if mechanics sound too oldfashioned.
the firm name is nice... delo mechaniker aktiengesellschaft :) sounds very ww2-ish.
if you meant mechanics, the translation software interpreted it as "one mechanic, two mechanics".
if you meant mechanics like a description of genre (the genre of mechanics instead of electronics etc...), you should write "mechanik" instead.
instead of katalog des sommers, you might want to write "sommerkatalog", that's the term we use for that usually. yours would theoretically work but it would sound as if i said "catalogue of the summer" in english.
eh... one thing:
a sniper rifle might need a bit more elaborate muzzle brakes. snipers usually shoot with very powerful ammunition and long barrels, high muzzle velocity and lots of muzzle energy.
therefore, it is recommended to have a bit better muzzle brakes than on simple assault rifles. (in urban environments, in open field, no one will take care of a muzzle flash 2/3 of a mile away... these rifles often don't have any muzzle brake - if the recoil is manageable, and 7.62 absolutely is)
the m82 (.50 cal) even directs everything of the muzzle flash slightly backwards to counter the more than heavy recoil.
www.snipercentral.com is a good source.

Hi Gekitsu,
Sorry for the german excursion.
Just one thing for the translation. I somehow suppose "Drehkraftentstörer" is a translation for someting like "gyroscopic system", a device to minimize the recoil. This would mean in german something like "Rückstoßdämpfungs-System". Hope the characters will show ...
Otherwise nice designs ... the germans here around seem to be a PITA for helping you out ;).

Thanks for the comments everyone, and sorry I butchered the German text. . . I blame my secondary education and Babelfish :-)
Delo 'Mechaniker' AG was meant in the mechanics=technology sense, rather than the neighborhood auto repair man. . . whoops :-) 'Delo' is the name I used to post under back in the day, and I liked the AG better than GmbH, so that's where the name comes from.
I'd like to post more recent weapons designs in the near future, but we'll have to see. . . more proprietary design work has to be cleared by legal :-(
Thanks again

sweet ... could all these guns reallly be made? i mean did u actually design the gun mechanisms too to which it ould be a working gun? i dunno this could be a dumb question.. lol

fipse: jep, zivi (so gut wie fertig... noch 2 wochen urlaub) und gun nuts, aber genug "gewissensbisse" dass ich auf keinen fall zum bund darf. ich haett eh so gut wie nix machen duerfen dort... :)
---------------
as for the gyroscopic thing, i don't think it is there for countering recoil but countering the force, the drum of barrells causes. the design looks gattling-like and therefore, will create a certain amount of turning momentum. i guess the device is to counter that, so you won't get your aim shot off because of the heavy barrels spinning.
glenn: there are enough germans, french, etcetera here that are able to turn out more believable results in translation than babelfish, i guess.
sou you might as well ask some questions here, if you are allowed.
i know you are delo, btw... i was there in the days of the tla's at the old team gt forum :)

Cool designs, I like that they all share a common pool of traits. Most fun, however, I got from trying to find out how to hold the buggers :D

Glenn, really nice presentation.
What kind of project? Is it a console game, pc game etc.? Nice to see your stuff, as always. I saw some older dark-age games stuff a while back, very nice.

I have no idea what guns they look like.
But they rock. Nice work.

Hey Francis, long time no speak! I'm doing console work out at Volition/THQ now; I gave up on the contract stuff once I got a permanent gig (all that work is up at http://www.dark-age.com/showimage.php incidentally). I've got lots of recent stuff I'd like to post, but you know how tight the industry is on IP :-P
I sure miss TeamGT's golden age :-(
What are you up to?
And thanks again, everyone ;-)

1st off the gun rock from a purely asthetic standpoint.
the sniper rifle looks a bit too much like the current WA2000 with a diff handle and mag.
the assault rifle is killer but i think 7.62 is a bit of a heavy round for it. pending whether you were going for armor penetration and accuracy past 250 yards it would be fine but the negative is less flesh damage, less bullets per clip by roughly 10.
the machine gun is dope and the magazine box is wierd and cool.
