The advice is quite simple: take the best you can afford - all graphic stuff is hardware expensive.

You donīt have to have a very good scanner if you donīt want to do colour-reproduction. For most of B/W-linework the cheap scanners are enough, better use your money on a good monitor this is one of your most important tools. Donīt go under 19" monitor, better bigger or a twoheaded vid-card with a secondary monitor. Take lots of RAM - at least 512 MB, better 1 Gig. If you can afford buy an Wacom Intuos-board, the bigger the better. With my recent experiences with a Graphire I would recommend at least an A5 one. If you donīt want to do much 3D work and gaming you donīt have to buy the biggest vid-card with a high framerate but better a mediumprized one with a good amount of memory. Pentium or AMD doesnīt matter much. AMD is normally a bit cheaper, Pentium in my experience needs less ventilation and is therefore less noisy. A good HD with at least 80 Gigs will help and of course a CD or DVD burning unit is a must (whatever you can afford for backups).

Furthermore a PC is normally cheaper than an Apple but the Mac is easier to handle if you donīt want to spend much time on working with the OS (and it looks cooler ;)).

With the brands itīs better to ask the other U.S.-aborigines here around, I donīt know anything about prices in the US. I personally take Compaq for my firm if I donīt want to configure the Computer or one from a local store.

Hope I could help you a bit

BTW Iīm working with a 1 1/2 year old 1,8 Ghz Pentium at home and an Apple G4 at work.

A few PC brands that I would recommend are:
DELL
Sony
Hewlett Packard

Compaq are VERY proprietary and since HP purchased Compaq their own lines have started to slip. Gateway is OK in price but they are not consistent with thair quality and I do not recommend them. I have a Mac and I'm getting a DELL PC laptop to do more work on the road. I'd rank DELL and Sony tops in reliability and power. Sony is more expensive but look at one up close and you'll see why.

What PC do I have.

I have a Dell Inspiron 4150 Pentium 4
1,6ghz
256mb ram
30gb hard drive
32mb ATI Mobility video card
14" monitor

If I were to give you 1 advice, DO buy a well known brand. Hewlett Packard, DELL, IBM or something like those. Not ACE or Compaq. I friend of mine bought a Compaq the same time I bought my DELL (both laptops). And all he would talk about was "I saved $550 dollors on a laptop and I've got 200 mhz more than you do!". But later that week his sound card crapped it self. Every week something would fail. The fan stopped working, his monitor started blacking out, his dvd drive didn't open any more.. he couldn't sit with it on his lap cause then the dvd drive would stop and make this gastly noise like a wounded animal (had to have it on a desk to use the dvd)... and so on and so on. he never has his laptop cause it is always at the repair shop. I however landed on a computer with a faulty video card and monitor, so I got a new monitor, and a new processor (the video card is attached to the processor on DELL laptops), they even gave me a better processor and video card for my trouble. Two other friends of mine however have DELLs and nothing has happened to them.

And don't even think about getting a brand you've never heard about, they're cheaper but you'll be in and out of the repair shop. I bought an ACE once, It crapped it self within two months and I had to get a new one after a LOT OF hassle. So be smart and get a good brand. Both is it more reliable, and you're safer with customer support if something goes wrong, just my 2 cents :)

Thank you for all your help and I won't not get Hewlett Packard, ACE or Compaq. They did crash on me three time each brand. I am gone to get DELL or SONY or Gateway in the future.....

Thanks again........

The only thing with HP is that they have a SHITTY warranty. A cd exploded in my sis' drive and instead of replacing the unit (there were shards of plastic everywhere I couldn't open the drive properly anymore), they just took the whole unit and gave me a refurbished one. A fucking display refurbished station with stickers all ripped and missing screws and all.
I do yell when things are just getting ridiculous. :evilbat:
I guess Dell is the best bet in brands, but I'll be upgrading my machine instead of getting a brand. I'm cheap like that.

Anyways.. I have a p350Mhz 64Mb ram at home and a 1.4Ghz 512 Mbram at work. That ctr samsung syncmaster isn't too bad either. This is the minimum you should be working with.
Now reguarding tablet size, I'm content with my intuos 2 6x8. I got a 4x5 at home and it's a bit of an adjustment to go from one to the other but if your strokes are generally short, you don't need to spend thoushands on money on a huge tablet.
