View Full Version : The SCULPT & 3D challenge - ROUND #1 - VOTING

October 3rd, 2006, 01:40 PM
Hello and welcome to the 3D & SCULP challenge VOTING.
After a shy start.. the very first round of the 3D battle... brought to your attention soem strong players.

THANK YOU ALL FOR JOINING AND FOR YOUR EFFORTS.
A big hand goes to the people who couldn't finish... i know time is not easy on any of us. Hope to see you around and to see you finished stuff.
Thanks go to the CHOW crowd.. i hope they will be here more often to give you a hand.. and i hope you guys will give the the harsh feedback - there where it's needed. Building orthos it's not easy.

Now... i was thinking on how to split the poll.. into Sculpt, 3DHIgh Poly, Low poly etc... but in the end... i think it;s all a matter of how we represent the ortho.
A low poly.. seems easy.. but we all know that normal maps these days... are drifting the poly barrier in terms of detail. Surely.. holding a sculpt in your hand and looking over details has no replacement in a digital world. The picture of a sculp should be no match for a great render. The highres guys have all the lights, materials and the freedome of the 3D tools - yet their job is hard like hell.
All in all - we all have fun building in 3D.
I consider we all know the diferences between mediums. We all have our own preferencers and theories.
The voting allows multiple choices, and it's public.
DON'T VOTE FOR YOUR SELF!
Apart from that... fell free to value the works as you see fit.
The new round is on.. it's easyer, and it should be fun. We haev some crazy orthos this time... so.. BRING IT ON.
Dont; be shy.. ask the ortho guy about anything.
Let's rock this place!

TOPIC:
ORTHO - 3 eye masked mechano goblin hunter

later we will have the concepts from COW, IDW and even... EOW.
feedback is always welcome!

NOTES:
Before we roll the orthos i will kindly ask you to consider upploading your 3d files to the website along with the render.
the ideea is - we can use the models for other activities - texture challnege, light & shader, animation, etc
This is optional!

For the Sculptors:
If you want you can send the sculpt to the artist who did the ortho. I ma sure they will be so happy to see touch their concept for the 1st time.
It will motivate a lot of people to submit concepts and it will help up all along in the long run. Again.. this is optional!

One more thing.
WE NEED A MASCOT.
So.. the winner of this round, could become our header for a year. :yayca:
Feel free to advertise this activity to other local 3D sites... bring the big muscles in - the more the better...

These are the orthos picked by you - for wips or finals:

Hi, It's time for an update on my sculpt. I started sculpting Marco Mazzoni design I wanted to build all the mechanical parts using styrene but I didn't have enough to finish it and it was going to be a while before the new stuff arrived. So of course I still wanted to enter so I picked cognition.sb design and started sculpting. I sculpted him with sculpey and it took me 3 and a half days to do. In the pics he is missing two straps they will be added after he is painted. Anyway here are the pictures.

My original sculpt I still plan to finish it in the future.

Small update I have started to paint my sculpt but it still needs alot of work. I have only done the upper body the legs and back still need to be painted, any way here are a couple of pics.

Well, I would have liked to have done more cleanup, but with the given time frame I did what I could. It was a very good concept, but I underestimated how long it would take for me to do all of the metal parts/all the stuff thats sticking out. I hope I did the thing justice! Oblio, thanks for organizing the event, it was fun, and definitly a good portfolio stuffer. Here are my final pics.

Okay, not much time left, but this is too much fun to pass up. I'll devote my second effort at sculpey-mangling to Sinix' excellent goblin hunter.
Here are some progress shots of the big-headed skinny-guy:

Much much more work to do, clearly.

Finished. I didn't have as much time as I'd have liked, what with school and exams :[ . Still, it was a lot of fun. I'm looking foreward to seeing the others done.

I too picked Hurricane's X-bow goblin. About 1/2 way there, not sure I'll finish this weekend as I have family coming, but will finish when time permits.:bashful:

about a week and some worth of work off and on....i spent way too much time laying out the uvs for the main body the one day i think...so i will most definatley be doing a zbrush pass with it. i didnt spend hours on end trying to get pelting to work half way and then another handful of hours laying out the uvs nicely for nothing...

*nvm about textures....just saw the post where you said you'll see about them...unless you do want them done*

blast!

still need to install the claws, the joints connecting to his elbow, teeth, mask, ears, eyes.

i cant wait for the next one now.
much fun and good practice even if i dont get this mo fo done.

Lots of great stuff, I put in one vote for 3d which went to flip, and one vote for sculpture, which went to tainted. I really was impressed with flip's 3d, I feel like he captured the character wonderfully and kept a reasonable poly count, so bonus. I was going back and forth between kris and tainted for sculpture, they're both crazy.
