extra brownie points for use of a 3-point perspective!
double extra brownie points for use of a elliptical perspective!! :D

I don't know 3 point perspective, or elliptical perspective. But, it sounds like a good topic. I can't wait to see some submissions.

I want to get some ideas, but I'm probably gonna make mine 2 point.

To go from 2 to 3 point perspective just add a vanishing point for vertical lines (above the horizon when looking up at structures and below when looking down). Like how verticals converge when you tilt your head up or down when looking at walls or whatever.

Elliptical perspective... Not sure. Is that just the perspective of ellipses? ie. their roundness in perspective.

I'm confused about elliptical perspective as well. I'm assuming it means drawing ellipses that conform to the perspective present?

Is this Holograph or Hologram?
A holograph is a document written entirely in the handwriting of the person whose signature it bears.

I guess the elliptical perspective would create a fish eye lens effect (2 point perspective where instead of perspective lines you use curves and they create a parabolic effect as they approach the viewer). Again... I guess.

I'm definitely in on this one!!! Are there deadlines on these things??

I'm going with hologram! it makes more sense!

Back to the elliptical perspective, if you google it everybody refers to it as circles becoming ellipses when you draw them in perspective, not a special perspective technique as I was expecting.

Maybe that'll help.

Look at the link on Number_6 first post.
http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=67035&highlight=%22elliptical+perspective%22
And some general perspective comparison from 1 to 6 pts.

NIce topic, cheers.

interesting thing, i meant hologram, but if anyone wants to go for the true meaning of holograph, go ahead! i can totally envision some megatastic important handwritten holy document being displayed or whatever!

with elliptical perspective, i mean more or less like the 4 point perspective described in the link above.
so it's not like you'll be getting brownie points for having a lot of cylinders in your design :D

stalsby - the deadline is noted in the first post, as usual. i might not get around to compiling the voting thread at that precise moment though.. but i try to keep this in a more or less weekly schedule

frustration about that link in the post; it doesnt work the way the person shows in his panorama, as vartical lines have nothing to do with the horizontal vanishing points.

one can either do a cylindrical projection (which the link has another link to a picture of) where the vanishing "points" up and down are actually infinite lines at the same time (which gets you a mercator-like distortion if you went all the way up or down, with that single point being stretched across the entire page....think north and south poles)

or you can define a direction of view which is where the person is actually looking, and establish there your perfect horizontal and vertical lines, with up, down, left, and right lll being equidistant from this direction of view. theres a trick of this though, anything too far outside the normal persons range of focus (approx. 60 degrees) can look rather distorted. also, if the person is looking up or down at all, the horizon bows because it is no longer aligned with the perfect horizontal line, and this has a tendency to bother people. still, i like this point of view best for showing the most true-to-science ive been able to get to work practically.

i might give this a try, though im new to this whole environment thing

the right term for elliptical perspective is "curvilinear perspective" (or "spherical perspective").
Yes, It's basically what a fisheye view would give you. 5 VPs and I just love it! :D
In fact, curvilinear perspective pretty much resembles how we actually see the world...well, more or less that is...

Pendant would be "rectilinear perspective" btw. This is also commonly used in architectural drawings creating dynamic compositions.

You can find some very useful info here:

and here:

Oh yes, for some advanced content: :D

Well, I won't have time to do this one anyway....
(I would have gone for curvilinear madness, heheh)

damn.

damn, that elliptical perspective is melting my brain. im pretty sure i'd fail out of industrial design if i feel too far down that hole, lol. pretty intresting though. also think if you draw a cube in perspective. and then find the center line on one side (it usually sits more towards the back edge) however if you draw an ellipse on that face and find the major axis of the ellipse its dead center the distance between the front and back edge. technically it should be towards the back like the centerline of the face. but then you have a wonky looking ellipse! sorry thats kidna confusing but basically...
linear perspective is BS!!

anyhow. good stuff

ive actually got a good idea for this now, i just need to see if i have the time for it.......

woah... I say anyone who can do curvilinear perspective successfully should automatically win! It's too bad you don't have any time for this one Hideyoshi I'd like to see what you come up with, I'm in the mood for a little madness.

@chaosrocks: "I call it crazy stairs..." Sorry, I had to hehe. I really like the values, I'm wondering if maybe you could've pushed the perspective more extreme and distorted, like a M.C. Escher painting?

chaosrocks
November 9th, 2006, 08:25 AM
actually curvilinear perpsective and spherical perspective are not the a same thing. and spherical perspective can be either convex or concave just to make matters more confusing.

.I thought about Escher..then chickened out

Well this is what I have so far. Dunno if I want holographs or holograms yet, hmmm...
EDIT: Finished. Didn't think I would get it in time, had to do B&W cause I was lagging behind.

Holy Hall of Holograms
The majestically large hall houses many floors filled with holograms from past holy figures of this species' religion. Many of the denizens come to visit and admire the figures much like that of a museum. This alien civilization reveres their holy figures over anything else, which is why they dedicated so much time and resources into the construction and implementation of such an elaborate attraction.

hallo: Hallo, how are you? Yes, well, I think you probably know that your piece is far from done right now. It leaves too much unclear and this being concept art - we need more info. Angle wise its fine.

Hello dragon4lunch, I'm fine, thanks. What about you?
Indeed I do - I really hope to get it done by monday, since the topic is quite inspiring. Are you working on an entry for this round, too?

hallo: I won't be here over the weekend, but I have started something, that I could turn into a hologram room if time allows on Monday. Good luck to you. gizmodus looking good! A little more clarity would be good though.

hey hint hint a strong light source or sourcces could totally Make this piece. the totally centered one point perspective is a little dull atm....
