Nice start! I like your character drawings and I think the futuristic pistol design looks especially great! Remember that bones shouldn't be drawn straight though or your figures will look stiff. And muscles of course add their own curves too which IMO doesn't show too well on the contours of your arm studies. Keep those up, and keep this updated. :)

Hi Call0ps, nice to see some more work from you. You've got some very nice pieces here.
In the tenth post the kids arms look a little too small and is feet are strange.
I like most the shoes sketches and the one with the cat. The last one is also very simple and nice.

Like the knights head...very nice. Your other stuff nice as well, but it could do with less short lines...at the moment your digital stuff can look a little scratchy and nervous in places because of the length of your strokes. Same with colour...dont be afraid to go crazy!
Keep it up!

hey call0ps, thanks for stopping by my sketchbook and leaving a comment, i really appreciate it.
you look like youre headed on the right track and putting basic yet very important principles to great use. i love your approach to the girls' hair, it gives it a nice sense of depth with, what it seems like, not too many strokes.
since im in the early stages of learning and am still building on what is currently, a very small library, a piece of advice ive been given repeatedly is to take my time and really study things. its simple but when put to good use, its amazing what those extra moments of study or just looking from a diffent angles and seeing how certain features interact will do.

February 4th, 2007, 04:03 PM
nice stuff :)
you can't improve colouring if you don't practice, so keep at it and don't give up ;)
drawings are looking good, but try and improve line qualit and precision, as Mull said some lines are scratchy...
keep sharing!

Hi
some good works. and i see a lot of improvement. I like how in the last post you have more of a varying line. and you didn't feel the need to have an outline going all around the head. keep heading in the direction you are going with your lines.

eyes are rarely outlined. The are various shapes that constitute the eye and it is important to know them. The eyelid are 3 dimensional and should be drawn that way. Think of a tangerine or orange with a few slices removed. The eyelid also casts a shadow on the eye. Eyes automatically become a focus point so makes sure you study them well!
Work some on your colouring and lighting as well. I recommend doing some mastercopies of Rembrandt's self portraits!
Like the energy in your work.
Nice stuff overall, keep it up!

hi
nice updates. I like the way you are moving forward. keep on drawing. I was think the best advice for me to give you on color is use draker darks and lighter lights. If your not going to have dark shadows make sure to have dark accents to give the illusion of a full value range. taking a look at how other artists get a full value range is a great way to improve. thats what I try and do. :)

I suggest lowering the size of your WIPs. Over half of them are over 200kb so browsing this thread becomes a bit difficult when you don't have the good hardwares.
If you're not already doing so, I reckon some hear proportion studies will complement the real-live sketches you're doing right now. Hope that's relevant to you.

Pencils are developing a very nice moodiness to them - love it. It all comes down to mileage - the more you draw the better you draw - so keep grinding because I love where this thread is going. Getting stronger with each update.

Hey callops, really enjoyed going through your brief, albeit nicely improving SB. Youve got a nice quality with your rendering, could be cleaned up a bit, but will come over time and practice. Really liked this one mate

You're portraits are coming out very nicely, but do not overabuse them. There are a lot of people falling on what I use to call "portrait madness" just to realize they can't draw other stuff well. Diversity is the key.
TheGnoll
March 11th, 2007, 05:11 PM
hey dude, latest updates are looking good.
Listen to what all these wise people have to say man...get an anatomy book from loomis, bridgeman or hogart or whatever and start studying seriously, if you want to improve really fast.Sit in front of it, read, copy the pictures. While you draw them, make sure you always visualize what you work on in 3d in your head. Then try and use what you've learned on something completely different.
Remember to keep the subject varied too, don't fall in a comfortable position or you won't be motivated to push harder.Always challenge yourself ;)
keep pushing man, keep pushing, and make this SB grow...quick.

hey,
seems color is your weak spot, atm. do more color studies, also get rid of the white background when working in color, first. that's really important and helps a great deal to get better results with color! =)

my man call0ps,
sorry im so damn slack and hardly reply to your book man :nohope:
i really like the way you're using that pencil, great confidence in some and rawness in most. can i suggest something? try drawing form your elbow, really loosen up and draw big arcs to get your forms, this adds alot of life to drawings i reckon, great for quick sketches.
sorry about the foot, bad to hear, but im glad you're still at it! im really looking forward to seeing where you take your drawing in the next few months ;)
also you draw women really well, chicks are haaaard to draw well.
keep it up friend :)

hello callops, whats up man, i like that last one, good details on the pipes. A bit hard to see whats going on ( maybe im a freak but i see a crow foetus in there ?! ) Maybe its your scanner but this piece could use some darker blacks, and some cast shadow coming from that pipe would help with the overall 3d feeling in my opinion... hope you dont mind if i crit your pencil which are far better than mine btw. And something maybe you dont know if you use photoshop, theres a nice thing called auto-level that i always use each time i scan something, it fixes most of the crappy work done by the scanner. ( ctrl-shift-L ) ;)
keep posting !

Yo dude, thanks for stopping by my book!
This (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y112/Call0ps/lovecoupleBIGshitiam.jpg) has incredible potential as an emotive drawing - you've captured an awesome moment, fleeting yet timeless if that makes any sense. What it need is a more emotive style. I usually use hair, leaves or snow to handle this, to get that sense of emotion going better. Would like to see this one get taken further.
Would also have to echo Donkey. Keep them coming mate, and don't forget to work on the more technical side of things - anatomy and such.
ciao dude!

Hey dude! Thanks so much for the constant support!
Last one does look great, think you should introduce more colours into the face. Keep it nice and desaturated, but add some blues and yellows and perhaps greens to the face aswell - very subtly! Jason Manley once said you can find all the colours in a good looking skin tone.
Looks great though, keep it up!
ciao!

I agree with brendan and Manley about the the different being present in the skin tones. VEry much true. Btu ttis really hard to capture those colors because they are so subtle.
the pencil are wuite cool but the coloring need work. YOur a lot liek me, I am not that good with coloring either. Still keep working. PRactice makes perfect.

nice book going here bro. in your pencil work remember to feel out the forms and try to suggest volume by wrapping your values around the forms. on the heart for instance you might be better off suggestion the folds and bulges with variations in value rather than line. keep at it!

hey Callops things are coming along nicely here. love #77 and the first pic in #82. minor crit- the girl at the bottom looking down - her face and cranium appear to be at different angles/ sizes. This (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y112/Call0ps/portraitsofgirlz.jpg) is going somewhere really cool. The variety in scale makes it more very intersting, and the repition of shapes gives it a consistency and binds it. I think you should keep playing around with these concepts and ideas, develop them!

As for your last one, really cool, and I could tell you had just seen m@'s vid .. several things , but anyways a small critique is the brush strokes wich in some angels doesn't look so comfident as the rest of it.. it looks kinda sketchy like if you didn't knew what you where doing until you had already put down a few strokes. haha its hard to explain what i mean, but its pretty visible on the and around the eyes on your last one!

hey c, thx for stopping by my book. your stuff is really nice, and your color work is getting stronger. just a question, do you like anime? i ask cause when you draw faces, they tend to be flat and out of proportion. i used to struggle with this a lot, but i studied the planes of the face and ive gotten better. if you have the means, i would recommend picking up a bridgman book (either the big comprehensive book or constructive anatomy or the human machine) or somebody who goes over planes and forms of the face. studying that will make your faces look more accurate and more 3d-like. keep up the good work man, g'luck. :cheerleader:

Hey it's about time I take a peek at your sb... :3 Hey, while the direction is generally good so far, with your shading I suggest using flat difinitive shapes on the planes of faces for example (or anything) to keep them from looking flat. Like this http://www.heroesonline.com/Photos/hc03/images/pratt-darker.jpg by George Pratt, her face is readable even small with flat shapes on her face ~
Keep it up !

Ah, so you practise kendo? I had some lessons long ago during the Aikido training, it´s soooooo interesting. Nice SB, your evolution is quite general, which is really good, but I agree with Naomiful. Why don´t you try to make 3-tones exercise using paper with a middle tone on it? limit yourself to 3 tones, using highlights and shades to create volume, and it will help you to think in a tridimensional way.

hey callops, missed a few updates, but some neat stuff..I really like how the speedy of the gasmask dude turned out(umbrella logo was a lol touch!) The last one has some nice colors, take it to the next stage(after addressing the issues already mentioned). And yeah, sucks to hear about the vista thing, there should be a way to replace it with XP. :O hope to see you back and posting soon. Ciao.

Looking through here, there is definitely improvement. I think you would be well served to really focus hard on facial structure, and really study and figure out for yourself what makes things look dimensional. Think about the simplest way to make something, such as a face, look volumetric. I think that may help you understand more fully.

Great animal studies!
I remember going to the zoo, and just was frustrated they don't sit still...
For the portrait studies...I can give you some advice, but I think it's better if you learned it from where I read it:

Looking good dude, second what naomi said. Study the planes of the face and especially when painting female faces, you want to involve as little texture as possible - keep it simple.

Drawings are lookin better already, now get to those face studies! Some things still look off, like the eyes slanting inwards and the width of the nose (averagely the nose is as wide as the eye). Also the mouth on this last one is too big I think.
Keep drawing dude - like the bone doc says every day is the only way.

Nice work Call0ps
like the pencils, rendering and good improvement
sometimes you are lacking dimension as others have mentioned and i think you would benefit from a longer and more planned study. Think of the form of your subject and how it influences light and shadow. Use your lines to support your idea of the form
And you have to post more art :!:
Keep it up dude and thanks for your comments and support, i appreciate it

well the tournament it over for about 3 weeks, i lose so fast, i blinked and i lost lol really fast, my first international tournament and it was GREAT!! see all those kendokas from everywhere, the bests of their country and an opportunity to practice with them was a honor for me and a great lesson. now i must practice more and harder to lose a bit less faster :P
unfortunately i almost didnt grab a pencil these days, lot of school works to do, good news is the school is almost over 3~4 more weeks. for now i will stop praticing kendo and draw. Studie a bit, cuz i'm really dumb, its the final tests so... dedicate a bit to it. another thing is the computer have given me problems, its because of vista but anyway, now its seems to work fine ( it took some weeks to ) no drives for vista back then.
i just want to thx everyone for all the suport/critic/advice. THX U!!! i'm really sorry for not to listen as much i liked to your advices, thats also due to the lack of practice i suppose. i know, or at least i should know theres no shortcuts to become a better artist, just need to pratice and pratice and pratice every single day. as soon as the school over i intend to do so, or as soon the last test over :D

if you are referring to the teeth that is way back behind all the other teeth, they are called wisdom teeth here in the United States. And yes, they hurt like hell when they need to extracted, especially if the gum has to be cut open to get to it. Anyhow, rinse your mouth with lukewarm salt water every couple of hours to help it heal and reduce swelling
nice sketch, surprised you can concentrate with the pain.

I should try and participate in those challenges myself, but maybe only when I'll have more free time, that is next month, blah...Wouldn't want to find time only on the day of deadline, haha.

A lot of the time you seem to be compressing the faces when you draw, making the faces very thin compared to the size of their heads. Maybe take some more care with support lines before you start drawing more?

hi Call0ps
good stuff since my last visit. looks like your faces are improving. and I think drawing the skull is going to help you. The biggest thing is to have the face broken down into basic shapes. and then having the features in the correct places... These last gesture drawings are great. I think they would seem less stiff if you gave more of an arch in the back and exagerated the twists a bit. Keep on going these are great!

On August 1st you posted a page of hand studies, on August 5th you posted a character with their hands behind their back... Extend one of her arms , and try on all of those hands and observe the effect it has on her character. Hand Row 2 in the middle would make her look like a Trekky, so I as the viewer would assume various things about her personality, the piece hand in the first row would make her look japanese possibly... would be interesting to see the different combos. Hell, I'm going to try myself in a little while, you got me curious.
EDIT: the new character doesn't have hands either! Just another opportunity.

So true to my word I gave it a shot, here are about half of them. This kind of stuff is new to me too, was surprised by the amount of difference in expression just by changing the hand,it was a worthwhile little exercise, I do suggest you try it yourself.
The moral of the story is always incorporate your studies into new drawings, find new ways of expression with each one.

Hi there Call0ps!
Imaginational stuff, awesome seeing that. I'm doing more of that myself and it is starting to become a great fun. I must say the hand drawings look very good, a few lines and everything's there. Are the gestures refed? Those posted before the hands studies. Define the ribcage better, the back looks too straight. Oh hell, just read that someone has pointed this out for you. But that just proves I'm right, haha.
Beware of those ballerinas in the clouds! Though it looks good I must say, as if you painted her there on purpose. But watch out for that stuff when you don't wish it to be there.

Hi Callops!
The contrast really is low in the speedpaint. When working with values only it helped me to have a gradient from white to black, so that I could pick the value I need and use the whole scale, not just the middle greys. I guess that's a problem most of us have to deal with. It does make the painting look flat, so look out for that.
In the drawing proportions are a bit messy and his back looks too straight. The head looks nice by itself though.

hey razz, thx a lot with the advice, yeah the proportions are stil a problem to me, as well as everything else xD, always good to hear your critics, straight and honest, love it :D
another value exercise thinking about what razz said, altogh the proportions still arent as good ... gotta draw more :)

October 9th, 2007, 01:21 PM
Yo Call0ps, looking good dude! and about values.. while razz has an interesting point about using the whole range, you can also easily make realistic forms with limited range. The trick is to make sure all forms go through same value change.. well i am just repeating what's in loomis books actually.. hehe.. but yeah, the whole range does it a nice contrast but doesn't mean limited range can't do similar either. suppose I also use the whole range too..heh
and few things I notice is lack of shadows... that really adds so much more..
keep going dude!

Cool stuff callops. I really like the life drawings and the weird little creatures. Just a little crit I saw on one of your drawings:
Just remember that faces must adhere to perspective rules as well. I moved the eye on the right side down quite a bit. I placed it almost below the left eye (eye closer to us) because the features all have to go towards a vanishing point. And if you notice, the lips will be angled a little upwards, also going towards the vanishing point. All angles of the face will adhere to this rule. Just remember those vanishing points. hopefully that will help you to draw better proportioned faces

Nice biro sketches. Those will really help you with your linework. You need to be careful when you can't erase. I like the sketch with those three creatures, very nice. Planning to push it any further maybe?
I might just pick up a biro after seeing these.

Wow Callops, I can't believe the improvement shown throughout the thread! Those last few posts really show how much you've learnt, the profile life drawing is gorgeous, especially the nose. *Has a nose fetish* I really liked the clouds painting on the previous page too, the colours on that were spot on, as were the clouds.

hey man, i'm glad i came across your book!
pretty sweet stuff in here man
you definitely know how to render pretty damn well, except thats the easy part. one thing i would work is the drawing aspect of it. Trying to get the same depth and sweetness with just line once you can draw well, you can render and do all that other stuff as well. It will also help your anatomy and all that stuff. basically i'm saying become an expert at drawing and you'll be way ahead on everything else. this is just my suggestion and opinion though!
keep this up man!

the sketches you did of the people hughing and reading are great man, spontaneous and cool. this last sketch is great too, the only thing that i find odd is that her left bumcheek is a bit squared, it doesnt get along with the rest of the body since you did it round and full of curves, but its just a nitpick. great sketches man, ill be watching. thx for your comments on my book.

Damn, you're getting much better, Call0ps! I kind of like the environment, only you could add more atmosphere. HERE (http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/9850/bumkseeinspiredopoq6.jpg) I did a little few minutes overpaint to show what I mean. Think foreground, middleground, background when doing environments, and seperate them. And as you know I'm in early learning stages myself, so takes this as a suggestion.
Keep working!
