Use any dimension you want. But try not to go too big. Mine is probably too big: 800 x 800. I would say around 600 Wide by 4 or 500 tall is good. I think what you have to remember is that not everyone has there monitors set to a high pixel width.

I think 1024x768 is the most commonly used resolution. I personally prefer websites that don't use a fixed resolution, but are designed in a way that works with any resolution.

if you want to build a 100% compatible site, I would suggest a maximum of 760 px wide. So people with low 800x600 resolution can visit the site without disturbing scrollbars.
I think that nowadays sites with 1000x600 resolution are possible.
Just decide what you like :)

personally, I try to make something that will work for 800x600 users but will rescale for bigger resolutions. You can't please everyone ! After it'll be "should I make it IE, Netscape, Opera, etc. compliant too ?"

Good luck btw ! Spend lots of time on thinking about your design and layout

Keyth... over 50% of people on the net still use 800×600. Of course, if your demographic is more specialized, like for artists or gamers... that figure may shrink dramatically. I'm a full time developer and this is what we shoot for, but we design our sites to scale upwards (and back) well, if someone wants to use a different rez. cucaracha hit it right on the head. Shoot for about 760px in width and you'll be good.

For an example of what I mean... click the link in my sig (I designed the theme for that site). It will work at 800×600 all the way up.

i agree, keep it on the small side if you can, or scalable.

even though i run 1280x960 i usually don't like my browser to take up the whole screen (unless i'm browsing ca :)). i'll resize it horizontally so i can keep track of other things like im/irc.

cheers,
steve
