View Full Version : DSG 1140: Halloweeny: HORRIFYING CREATURE HAS FLESHY JACK'O'LANTERN LIKE HEAD

[ I'm really not looking for the typical "Sleepy Hollow" headless horseman here. ]
[ This creature's body doesn't have to be human, and the head need not look exactly like a carved pumpkin (although it should be perfectly integrated with the body.) ]
[ In fact, I sorta like the idea of the head flowing right into the body without a neck... ]
[ ...but, you don't have to do that. Just shoot for something creepy and strange. ]

Planted by a witch in a cemetery and watered with the tears of infants, a pumpkin seed, blacker than the drakest night, has ripened on halloween and wants nothing more than to bring the pain it feels on others.

Sorry for the crappy quality, didn't bring my stuff with me to work so had to use what was readily available and within easy reach. At some point i hope to try creating it in photoshop.... yay for drawing with soap.

The creature is an aggregate vegetative life-form. It's feet are coconut like hooves with hairy roots leading into legs that have a texture closely resembling an un-ripe banana, leading into a woody upper body. The 'hunch-back' and head are both pumpkin-like gourds. I honestly don't know why i told you all that... but... yeah.

Yup. Its an old latin saying which basically says to remember your mortality. I take it as a sort of 'carpe diem', live life while you've got it.
It inspired a genre of art for a while which I kind of like.

Simonl - I agree with Mitze about the glints... Good wet feeling and they help our understanding of the forms. Colour's a bit washed out.
ashton - Good illustration... I don't think I care for, and certainly don't understand, the shape that's touching the left of his head... is that... what is that?? There are qualities about this that remind me of stuff by HungerArtist, who hasn't posted here in ages. Your logo doesn't fit the image, it only detracts from it. I really dig the expressive face, the body like an inverted artichoke, and the narrative set up by the environment.
Mehz - That first one is unexpectedly cute. :)
burrito - Nice creature. I dig the boldness of the linework... especially dig the hand/wrist areas. The addition of some soft highlights might help punch an image like this up a bit.
Ylla - A very good start... not crappy. But, yeah, it woulda been nice to see you really flesh this out a bit more. 20 minutes is not usually gonna be enough. ;)
Honey - Cool drawing! The tree has got some cool twisting going on, and that little branch to the right is adorable. The gourd-like lumpiness on the skin is a great addition.
Skolld - Cute. I like the arms.
apriori - Great fleshiness to the head! That stuffed toy looks really interesting. Good teeth, nose, and hair. Perspective's a little wonky here and there, particularly on the axe-blade (which would appear larger and more distorted, I think), but an appropriate and interesting angle to tackle. Next time: Colour! :teeth:
paradoxba - Very fun. I wish for just a bit of detail in the face, which grabs your attention but then there's nothing further to discover... unlike the neck and torso, which have some lovely little subtleties. The foot area's kinda dark... He's a good character, though.
Hamsta - Good sense of light and nice composition on this one. Proportions are a bit peculiar, but thas okay. The figure occupies its environment well.
AriA - You get points! The image rendering is rather inconsistent from lower right to upper left, and it'd be nice to see the flappy floaty creature as carefully done as the cute round one. Those little ghosts are marvelous. The moon is strangely positioned...
orionterron99 - I really like the overall idea of your creature... The rendering needs work, but keep at it and that'll catch up with your imagination. Very cool concept.
bobble - Groovy character. It took me awhile to recognize that white thing as a candle... I think letting the stitchwork overlap the flame was a bad idea, not to mention that the flame should probably be the brightest thing in the image and yet it is not. The background seems somehow arbitrary, but I like the other shapes you have carved out here.
dagreengo - I dig the idea of the viney horns.
Knight Vision - Looks like a creepy Muppet!
angora - Awwwwwww. That would make a marvelous Halloween card.
sez - He, he. Good sense of movement. I think this would have benefited from starting on a black/dark canvas and then working towards lightness. The white that shows through seems to suck power from everything else.
Brand X - Great environment. I'm thinking you just decided to ditch the topic parameters altogether, but since the brush is so nicely rendered, it's a short path to forgiveness. Colours are a bit bland. Good composition.
ThikSkin - Nice feel to the expression, and I like the mechanism of the mouth. There's a nice sense of perspective to the sky, but the surroundings lack any real substance... Maybe tossing down a basic colour for the sky and for the ground would've helped with that. Leaving all that white showing through doesn't do you any favours. The areas where you use fields of colour work a lot better than the areas where you use lines of colour.
Knight Vision Good colour in the sky, and I like the viney bit. Looks like he'd do battle with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to me. ;)
.adamb - Good basic rendering here... I wish that there was a bit more detail here and there to keep our attention. The arm to the right, which appears to be bent upward and on a horizontal plane, seems like maybe it'd be illuminated in a similar way as the head is. Dunno. I do like your overall expression of the bony and sinewy.
Vanvalen Yes, you must try and Lurk less. Good consistent rendering. Nice contrast. Pretty good description of form, although the mouth reads as a positive - not as the negative that you want it to. Satisfying details here and there. Pose is a little boring. Good creature. Good offering. Lurk less.
Dexion - Welcome. A decent first post here. There's a lot of life in this little guy. Nice face.
Fingers - Yes... good to have tentacles!. What is killing your pic is that damned sky. The hard edges don't fit with the way you've rendered the rest of the image, and the colour is all wrong and too light. Fun pic otherwise.
Oddo - Beauty! Definitely my fave. Great job. I hope you post more often.

Haven't posted in while...oh well.
The stalker of Hallow's eve, searching for warmth and the friendliness of humans. Unfortunately he goes about it in the wrong, monster-ry way, resulting in a murder. He is driven away from the town by a grief-stricken community, forced into a life of solitude. And pain.
Hmmm. 'bout 30mins in Open canvas? Fiddling around with some tools. Like diffuse, if you hadn't had guessed.
