I've been watching a bit of Star Trek : TOS lately. The old Kirk/Spock stuff is fun and playful, not pompously moralistic like the newer stuff. Bring back the cheerful colored shirts, mini skirts and rubbersuits I say!

Anyways, here I try to make ships contemporary to Kirk. This means simple shapes, no easy way out with bezier curves (or atleast as few as possible).

The NX-01 sheet was intended as a mix between the original Enterprise (1701) and Akira, kinda like the ship in the recent TV series tried to be. Mine is closer to TOS though, and I'm reworking it a bit.

Goddamn these are cool, Prom.

They're sexy, even.

There. I said it.

really fun concepts and nicely rendered- it brings me back to the old st days.
I see a bit of the akira ship detailing in the top ships, but I'm not seeing as much akira influence in Nx-01 though..

Other than the sharpening up to make 'em prettier... I say they need boobies. Yep. Two biggun's for good measure. I say a little general redesigning is in order. Looking at these, and thinking about the original enterprise, I'm constantly reminded of Apollo era space capsules.

your drawings remind me of the greatest videogame moments of my childhood

its so obvious that you love creating and imagining and drawing

you should create a semi-retro games console and your own catalogue of 2-d side-scrollers!

Nice ships, the ones at the top actually remind of R-Type.

I just looked up bezier curves on wikipedia, so how are those used in design? Is there a tutorial somewhere?

I enjoy your rendering style more than should really be allowed, Prometheus. You give the digital paint a thickness or viscosity that I have a hard time achieving. Kudos, and keep up the good work.

Crits...mmm, don't have many. You could go just a tad darker in some of the ships' core shadows, but that's up to you. I'd imagine there's not a whole lot of ambient light in outer space, you know.

And by the way, you're so right about TOS...the biggest problem with all the other Star Trek series is how seriously they take themselves. TOS certainly has its cheesy moments, but it rarely takes itself so seriously that it becomes an unintentional joke.
