First post. Let me introduce myself.
I am very new to all of this, I hope my image even uploads.

I am working very hard to improve my 3d skills and painting ability using Photoshop. I am 6mos away from graduating in Game Art and Design and simply wanted to ask for any advice.

The best way to show the style I am shooting for is to post this image of work by Dan Milligan and Craig Mullins.

It is not the overall ability and great work I am trying to duplicate (I know I have a long way to go for that) but the style and technique.

I do not even know where to begin. I feel I have a good grasp on the basics and I do not consider myself a newbie with art but I would appreciate any help please.

Either tutorial links or simple answers. Are those specific brushes used in Painter perhaps? How do begin to create art with the effects as show in the image. I am at a loss and I would love to work towards that style and goal.

Sorry the image may be large (if it works) and sorry its so elaborate. I am a fan like anyone else with the aspiration to do very well.

Thank you

Sorry. As I said I am new to this in every way.

Hopefully this link will now work.

This image refers to the thread starter that I mentioned.

How do I create art like this? Just process and technique, I know I cannot duplicate the quality.

Thank you

I'm guessing you mean what brushes you would use, whether to use an underpainting etc. I'm curious abut what replies this'll get, since it's something I've been wondering about too.

if you know how to use goache and watercolors and some of those, it will be easier to understand how those were done. mullins uses different brushes and masks, he blocks in the shapes and goes in for some details. he can do this stuff because he's a great draftsmen and knows his photoshop. basically with the skills using the traditional tools, he can make the transition to digital easier.
why don't you post your own work so we can see and give tips?

Here is a sample of some colored stuff.

Keep in mind most of my intention is to improve painting skills for the intention of creating texture maps for 3d models.

Any help is great.
