I have a 30D and a 580EX flash. My biggest challenge is getting shots of people walking towards me. I want to be able to fire off a few quick shots with or without the flash so I have multiples to choose from. Often they are out of focus and/or the flash does not fire. My problem is I am struggling with what camera and flash settings to use. Any suggestions?

Stay away from the Auto/P modes and get to know the Av/Tv/M modes. Theyll give you full control, also read the manual. To get proper focus with moving objects you might want to use continuos focusing (see manual).

What kind of light is there in the scene. Is it indoors/outdoors?

I think you should be able to see when the flash is needed. If not then meter the light in the area and see if what kind of shutter speeds you get. One good way is to meter the light of your own hand when your shooting people.

Id say since you use an off camera flash theres no harm in using it when you are unsure. You can also use flash bracketing (see manual ;)).

Hope I was of some help.
