Well just finished this class project, the idea was to take an old piece of architecture and then combine it with its contemperary counterpart. I chose to do the classic texaco style pumps with todays modern gas station shuttles.

Maya/ mental ray/ photoshop

Nice details modeling the pumps.

A few crits:
My advice would be to use HDRI lighting to give yourself better shadows and illumination. If you are short on render time or using a lower spec machine you could fake the softened shadow effect by using several spot lights but only applying shadows from one of them to avoid confusion.

Looking again at the shadows the ones thrown off the gas station and the pumps are in different directions - it could be that the light source is too close to the objects. Neither shadow appears to match the position of the sun in the background image.

If you have the time put some more subdivisions into the kerb on which the pumps are standing to give a better rounded curve (or just clean them out in Photoshop - the top of the sign also looks quite angular).

All simple fixes and should be a cracking render when it is done – look forward to seeing how things go – any chance of a wire frame to see the details of the modeling.

http://www.maxwellrender.com/ Maxwell is great for architectural renders and produces very good lighting, there should be a demo on their site that will plug straight into Maya - it can take a little getting used to however so if it is for project you may want to play with it for the next one you do.

NB - I like the organic ball room (for a lack of a better name) in your portfolio, again some nice modeling there.
