Master Sargent and Bouguereau paintings locations?! /study vacation

Hi all,


I'm planning on taking a short trip with the primary goal of visiting some
museums that contain wonderful and amazing artwork.
I'm mostly interested in the late 19th century painters ( Sargent, alma-Tadema,
Bouguereau, ....and earlier masters )
But I don't know where all those masterpieces of Sargent and Bouguereau are
displayed! Which city would you guys advice to go to?
Paris, Rome, New York,... ? ( the louvre or the MET ? )

I'd like to hear your thoughts

Why not take a vacation to the conceptart.org / massive black workshop? see some great professional / peer artwork and learn a ton? plus there's the shooting gallery in san francisco... so there's bound to be some decent work there.

I've been to the Amsterdam and Prague workshop and will probably go to the
next one on european soil.

But this is about a differrent learning experience.
I want to get as much information as I can about the painters and paintings
I mentioned before by standing face to face to them.
Smell the paint, absorb the atmosphere of the museum, get sucked into the
paintings and their timeframe,... you know?

But where are all those Sargent paintings for example? In the US, in France,
Italy,.. ?

Maybe this is a bit offtopic, but there is something i'd really like to know. What's that hype about this guy(Sargent) around here? Before seeing his name frequently mentioned here I haven't had heard of him at all. I got interested, and I checked some of his works on the net.(the ARC gallery of his, for example) IMHO, he is very skilled, undoubtedly, but he isn't really standing out from the masses of good painters from that period, for me at least. Sooo, is teher something I'm overlooking, or I happen to have a bad taste in art? ;)

If you really want to see Sargent's works there are a bunch in Boston, where he lived and painted for several years. I think the biggest (canvas-wise) are in the Museum of Fine Arts, then there's a bunch in the Fogg Museum, which also has many of his sketchbooks and drawings, and the murals in the Boston Public Library. That's all I can think of for now.

edit: oh yeah and the Isabella Stewart Gardner museum has maybe five or six, including El Jaleo.

In Europe, the Tate Britain (located in London) has one of my absolute favorite Sargent paintings (Carnation Lilly Lilly Rose) as well as several choice Waterhouses (Lady of Shalott, St. Eulalia) and I do believe they have a Bouguereau or two. Hands down one of my favorite museums I've ever been to

edit: no Bouguereau according to their website, but they do have 2 Waterhouses and 3 Sargents on display (they have others in their vaults it seems, but unfortunately not for public view currently). The Cummer Museum in Jacksonville has a couple stellar Bouguereau's....I can count the times art has made tears in my eyes. That is one of them.

The easiest thing to do is go to www.artrenewal.org and look through the paintings. It shows what collection they are in. Otherwise Fronia Wissman's Bouguereau book will say as well.

The Sargents in Boston are gorgeous.

LA has a few Sargents, LACMA and the Huntington Library. SF Legion of honor has a couple bouguereaus. Detroit...Mnpls...lots of places.

The MET in NYC has a pretty large collection of Sargent's and usually display at least one Boug. Be sure , if you visit the MET to take time to go through the archived room (can't miss it- right next to Sargents) - they have more Sargents in there as well.

and the ones in the MFA in boston are buetiful, the recently had a other exhibition there and it had a bunch more in including Madam X (aswell as alot of whistler stuff(including his mother) among many other awesome painters)

if you really want to find out get one of the big coffee table sargent books about all his pieces and it will probably give you the locations in that.

there's two or three bouguereau's in the Dali museum in Figueres(Spain).. but I guess it's not worth to go just for that.

Personally I would travel to NY and Boston, there's a $30 roundtrip bus ride between the cities. I'd be glad to show you around Boston if you decide to come here :)

I've seen "Springtime" by Alma-Tadema at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles. 15 feet high. Gorgeous.

There's also 3 of Bouguerea's shepard girls at the Fry Art Musuem in Seattle, near the Seattle Art Museum (which has none). The Fry, IMO, is a lot better than SAM. It's FREE, and they focus exclusively on western paintings of the 1800-1900 era.

The Appketon Museum in Ocala, FL has three Bouguereau's, one done by his wife, a small Gerome, and a reproduction of a Cot. Look into the Dahesh museum in NY for nineteenth century stuff.

was just going to mention the Sargents here! the MFA here as well as the Gardner Museum have alot of his work (the Gardner having El Jaleo in particular). both museums are pretty close to each other as well so it works out nicely.

really don't know of any Bouguereaus here though :\ either way wish ya luck on your adventure!

It looks like I'll be travelling to Boston and New york then :)
I read somewhere that a ride between Boston and NY takes about 3-4 hours.
Is that correct? Would sure be easy to travel back and forth.
