View Full Version : [WINNER: ILAEKAE] 2-Faces-In-1 Portrait Challenge
FlipMcgee
October 16th, 2006, 10:03 PM
Poll results: http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=81434
http://img107.imageshack.us/img107/4299/portraitchallengeai0.gif
DEADLINE: SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 2006
Separate poll thread to run from Nov. 6-10. Winner will be announced in this thread's title.
CHALLENGE: Create a dual faced portrait (i.e. half face "normal", the other half something else). Refer to this image (http://img376.imageshack.us/img376/8881/imgfx08qm5.jpg) if needed.
DON'T GET DISQUALIFIED, READ THE RULES:
- One half must be human.
- One half doesn't have to be grotesque or scary just because halloween is coming. But if you want it freaky, go nuts.
- Don't make a Janus head.
- Entry size must be around or less than 800 high x 700 width. (So no humongous pic will hog the poll thread.) If you break this rule I'll be forced to down res and re-sample your image....and add lens flares!
- Host your submission yourself so it will be easy for me to set up the poll. Or if attaching, make sure your forum name is big and clear in your entry. The forum's attachment tool has it's own way of sorting a group of images, so it can be confusing for voters to figure out who did what.
- Compositionally, crop your entry from the neck up (from the torso up is ok too); We're just going to focus on the face/head. If your actual piece is bigger than that, display it in other forum galleries and submit a cropped version in this t-dome.
- Any Medium, Any style, All skill levels. Photo manipulation, paintover, Poser use, 3d-2d mix 'n match is welcome. Experimentation with technique and tools/media is encouraged.
- Faces don't have to be anatomically correct, like jaw line flows logically from one half to the other. Be as asymmetrical as your dare. You can use a split screen effect (http://www.tv-timewarp.co.uk/incredible_hulk/IncredibleHulk.jpg) where half of your face or picture plane is different from the other. Conversely, you can do something like the Harvey Dent/2 Face (http://trashi.blogia.com/upload/twoface.jpg) villain in Batman.
- Other interpretations besides the provided examples, in terms of blending of the halves or orientation of the split is allowed as long as one half, or at least a good fraction :) of the image is human and it conforms to the framing (close-up to extreme close-up) as I've mentioned above.
- So an entry can be a head shot photo with one half painted over (tattoos, warts, etc.); another can be half digital collage, half trad media rendered.
- Optional: feel free to share wips, experimentations, different versions or interpretations. Just clearly mark which one you're submitting for the poll.
- Keep image wips under one post as much as possible and keep these files small to keep things tidy and minimize browser slow downs.
Submit final entries anytime on or before the due date. I'll edit this post with a link to the poll, gathering all your final images or whatever you've abandoned in this thread if you don't finish in time.
RULES WILL BE AMENDED AS NEEDED.
Pick your own art direction. Mine your imagination. Let's go!

Btw the entry should look like the second example, or we should draw 2 separate images like the first example? 2 images would be cooler imho. ;)

EDIT; oh I just read that the other part doesn't neccesarily have to be freaky, just different.. I'm thinking about going more mechanical now, that'll be an extra challenge. :P

Flip, I can't access your examples, but everything indicates that this is a vertical split only, ala either two half pics or one pic with some sort of physically real blending (I assume that's the Dent reference?). Ergo, any other kind of half + half is out, as in overlapping, transparent, or top and bottoms?

Yes, they're all verticals.
Okay (I knew somebody's gonna ask or suggest this :confident), other interpretations besides the provided examples in terms of blending of the halves or orientation of the split is allowed as long as one half, or at least a good fraction :) of the image is human and it conforms to the framing (close-up to extreme close-up) as I've mentioned above.
How's that?

two portraits..both alike in dignity in Veronas fair city where we set our scene....
do we have to do the split down the middle thing? I have another idea..it's still 2 portraits of two aspects of the same person...thats the point right?

Nice Piece, Chaos. Is that fire and ice, or water and fire. I would suggest you drop the bottom of the face down a little lower starting from the top of the lip. It looks too short.
JALlfaro: Both are really nice, but I would go for the turd man. It looks more unique.
Glikster: Haha! Any chance you could go for half male half crossdresser?

Okay, Flip, don't flip, but this flips this contest on it's head.
This is the first time I have posted any work on CA, let alone entered a contest, but I didn't see anybody else trying this idea, so I gave it a shot.
I am more of a graphic artist than an illustrator, and more of a writer than either, so please don't kill me.
Thanks for having a look.

fire and water. thanks for the advice. I won't be updating it though, Im done with it. It spent a week in Critique land and I acted on the helpful comments I recieved there. I wish you had said something then. Maybe you didn't realized it but its oil paint.... not so easy to make changes without repainting a quarter of the image. I was trying to make it a bit more proportioned like a child rather than an adult oh well. it is what it is
thanks anyway.

Nathan- I love that thing bro! I always been intrigued by those thingamabobs( damn I forgot the word)
Noiion- Brother I think my witch looks ahellavu lot like your medusa, I didnt do that on purpose, I'll stick to my turd man.
Chaos- oil? you crazy you, with all the cleaning and the brush strokes-my hat goes off to you...is that a scan or a pic?

woot hyver that's looking pretty fine already!
I must say the normal side of the face looks kindof unnormal too :P but not so unnormal to not be able to exist.
Love the glasses, they add a lot to the personality or something like that :)
I'm not sure I'll be able to make it, I'm very busy with school and having trouble keeping up with all the subjects at the same time, we only have 2 weeks until next test week, and we've only just started the new school period (we have 5 of them) a week ago, so we have to do a lot of work in a very short time.
Ah well, I'll try to get a bit more details and basicness in my image and then stop working on it.
love
