Gesture thunderdome #3. Quality over quantity

This week we're gonna do 50 gestures. But to add a twist to things you have to do 50 quadrupeds, meaning animals with 4 legs. Horses, cats, hamsters, rhinos and so forth. Concept artists require a good understanding of all sorts of animals to make good creature concepts. This is also to mess with those of you who have already started doing human gestures just to get a headstart. ;)


This time around we're only doing 50 because we want you to focus on quality. You dont have to meet a certain quality standard, since people are on different skill levels from beginner to pro.. But do your best - NO SLOPPY JOE!


And as always, those who enter but fail to finish will have to wear a LOSATAR for 2 weeks. The losatar is an avatar carefully crafted to maximize the pain and humiliation of pussing out and not staying committed.

sve, i really would like to do this...going into the Zoo as i did during my study time...i had to do hundreds of animal gestures back then...i loved doing these....but now i have no time for that kind of pleasure :)

Maybe i should do it one time to get some of the atmosphere back into my veins...

Ahh, dear Fozzybar. I will never see your gestures. And I'm so nosy, you wouldn't believe it. I see your finished polished art, it is beautiful, but it doesn't allow inside you much, it is very selective in what to show me, viewer. i wanted to see you without guards. Are you precise or sloppy when you in a hurry, what is your favorite in figure, face, expression or body language? What you see first in object, what is important to you, what is touching you first and the most? Oh well... it is not about sport anymore. Just curiosity. I like how you project yourself on this site. Wanted to know a bit more :). I think you are an artist with soul, I wanted to see it open.

I am just wondering about the quality thing.Because these are gestures I think they should be drawn quickly.If I am trying to make them look nice and spending more time will they still be gestures,I am not sure.
Maybe if someone could explain.

Just an idea here. How about moving this to the community activities if this is an ongoing exercise?
Heartbeat i think the ones you did last time were great. While they are meant to be done fast though, that doesn't mean you have to rush them as a rule. It's possible to to do a gesture in 3 or 4 lines of course, and sometimes that's something to aim for. I like the idea of mixing it up though. See how far you can take it in a minute or two, maybe make it 5 sometimes. That way it still counts as a quick sketch i hope :$

Could you add another thing to the first post? It would be cool if everyone writes a line about what ref they used...especially if they draw from life it's very interesting to see the movement and vividness in the drawings.

I'm still in doubt.. It's monday now, and wednesday we're going away to Rome (yay! :P) so errm, I know I can do 50 in two days (I guess) but if they'd be of a good quality I dunno :S

EDIT; I'm in if the things drawn below are okay. I did 25 up until now.

iolarnula-nice animals .As for the darker pencil ,you can adjust the levels in photoshop to match the look of your drawings.

ok Im gonna post each page as I do it. sorry about the scan quality, i actually forgot about this and didnt bring my scanner home from work. enjoying it so far..

edit: ok they are all up, quite proud I did it in a day and I definitley learned something, the quality is not as good as it should be, especially when I ran out of pencil. and in the later ones i started to not use reference, just looked a few pictures to get the general gist of the beast and drew it ..

Yeah i know chaos... but a friend came over yesterday and wanted me to help him fix his laptop. Spent most of my time doing that. So i guess the moral of the story would be bad planning and procrastination = crap work. I really just wanted to sleep last night, but i didnt want another two weeks of losatarism, espescially not inflicted by the fozz.
