putting time into this

i usually try to do portraits pretty quickly, but i started to get into this one and am gonna put more time into it, this is what i have so far after a little over an hour and a half....any crits would be great...thanks!

here's an updated version, i'm not happy with the background.... does anyone have suggestions on what to do, as in which color scheme will go well with the tones i used for the face. do i go with the same color scheme, compliments...what should i do?
