View Full Version : My first broken bone evar! AWESOME!

So, I had some coffee and got on the internet this morning. Checked my e-mail, checked myspace messages, checked this site. Chatted a bit in IRC. Decided it was time to get off my ass and do a bunch of midweek housework.
I got all the garbage outta the trash cans and ran outside, down my back porch steps. On the very last step, my knee just made some lame decision to give out, my ankle bent inward, I heard a HUGE SNAP, and then I fell and felt like I'd been hit by a sledgehammer.
In between hyperventilation and hysteria and panicking, I yelled out, "Can somebody help me," a couple of times. But no neighbors came to my rescue. My chihuahua came out the dog door, looked at me, and ran back inside. I think she thought I was yelling at her. I was shaking and in pain and couldn't stand up or walk, so I crawled up the steps behind her, crawled up to the phone, and dialed my hubby's work.
"I think I broke my ankle," I cried to him.
He rushed home, carried me to the car, and we waited at Urgent Care for 5 hours to hear a doc say, "Yup. Congrats, you broke your meta-tarsals!" Not my ankle, but the little bones inside of my footsy.
So here I am, 29 years old, in a cast and on crutches for the next 6 weeks, wondering how I've managed to have never broken a bone in my life until today. On my back steps.
I've come to the conclusion that I'm either that cool or that retarded. I don't even have a cool story like, "I fought off 12 rapists in an alley!" "I saved two moms from burning alive by kicking out a car window with my bare foot!" "I fell off a skyscraper while performing the world's most awesome parkour flip!"
Nope. I took a step. And, yeah, I ... uh ... broke my foot. PWNED BY WALKING!!1! W00T!!
Oh yeah, the house is still a mess too. :nohope:

Oh damn... the snapping of the foot action sounds pretty intense. Kind of funny how the chihuahua was like, "oh damn that! I'm leaving." Anyways, hope the healing process goes smoothly without any troubles.

hey Ursula
same thing happened to me but when my dog came down, I spoke in dog language and barked at her. She dialed the medics and barked at them over the phone, 5 minutes later there was an ambulance :)
j/k!
Hope you get well soon,

Ever since I broke my arm (from a faulty peddle bike...) at the age of 11 or something, I've become a wimp and very squeamish to the breaking of any bones. Your story made me cringe!
But like DS said, you can just play video games all day... without being shouted at by your mum(mom)... ; ]
Hope you get better soon. AND WATCH THAT STEP! : ]

That sucks Frau Goo. I always thought it would be hilarious to break your leg while you're just sitting around, maybe talking on the phone. But breaking your leg while you're taking out the trash sucks. Didn't your mom tell you not to do that? Hope you get better soon, and lern2walk. Serious.

metatarsals... didn't know you could break those. At least nothing was poking through the skin eh?
You can say you fought off 12000 rabid alien chiuauas that was attempting intergalatic D-Day in your backyard; and you saved earth with the meager price of a fractured metatarsal.
We'll play along.

Gooey, Gooey, Gooey...what am I going to do with you...?
I suggest we all set up a fund for prchasing enough bubble wrap that I can make a full body suit for our poor 'Goo...maybe 7-8" thick to keep her from future damage. I'll even put in little pockets for mothballs so you can keep fresh and bug-free...
If it makes you feel any better, I was dressing to go to town about two years back and had one shoe on, and reached for the other just as the cat discovered what shoestrings were for. being the svelt, graceful creature i am, I went into ballet pose with bare foot in the air, reached for the rapidly retreating shoe and crashed like a fully-loaded 737 into the plastic kitty house to my right...breaking every bone in my right foot from the arch to the toes. Got mad, jammed my foot into the shoe and left to catch the bus.
My wife cut the shoe off that night when I got home and hasn't stopped laughing yet. That's part of why I'm planning on buying a 12-gauge shotgun this Christmas...
Get well soon...<3

Hahahah! You guys are all so funny. Thanks for making me feel better on my first day of being a cripple.
I'll take pics of the cast so you can digitally sign it :} My hubby seems to have something in store for it already. I'm afraid of telling him where my stash of Sharpies are! :hold:
Haha, thanks for the very weird cards, Guggen and 0kelvin. Cookie, thanks for Vin's neatly trimmed armpithair!!OMG!
I FEEL ancient. My parents and grandparents have never taken ONE step and broken anything. Hehehe! I am such a clutz!
Anyhow, thanks again everybody for the funny messages. I will definitely get more calcium, sweet ca friends!!

you're not the first person who I've heard was pwned by walking, don't feel too bad about that. Snaping the ankle though, ooh, gives me shivers. I hope your six weeks go by fast.

Nooo! How can you go trick or treating on crutches?!
Seriously Ursula, I'm so sorry to hear about your break...! I've rolled my ankle plenty of times and even fooled a few ER doctors who thought I had fractured my leg but never had the full break. Make sure hubby keeps your video games library stocked and the stacks of pillows fluffed.

Feel better Gooey! And yeah... lots of video games!
As a serious aside, have you had a bone density check lately? It may be worth doing to set the mind at ease. Low bone density is pretty common in women. (my wife had osteoporosis at 25. Long story. ;))

Awe babe!
I can sympathise...I sliced my middle-finger real bad on some glass the other day, and got claret everywhere
...I cant hold a pencil proper...I thought the world was gonner end:)...
BTW - did ya get an x-ray? I did wen I 'hurt' my arm after dropping offa my bicycle...I asked if I could have it, and they gave it to me...
I mean, what on earth would they want it for?..
Get well soon cherub!

Aww Goodear sorry to hear that. I confess bursting laughing reading your post... Very sorry but your storytelling skills are no match!
My mother broke her BACK (part of a vertebra actually) while LIFTING a BUCKET of WATER. What's up with that ? She actually stayed like that for a couple of days thinking it would be fine and she just threw her back out. When I finally convinced her to see a doctor, the dude was flabbergasted. How could she walk like this ? Or handle this amount of pain ? WTF lady ??
I truly admire her.

Here's the soft cast and Atari, my non-rescue-chihuahua. I get the hard cast on in one week. :O
I think I'll take bdfoster's advice about the osteoporosis. Definitely something's wrong if I break a bone from walking. Heh. Good times....

I see what the problem is here, it's the dog. Just look at those eyes. He's guilty, I tell you. "Oh, I'm so sad that my mommy is hurt. All she can do is sit at home and pet me allll day. Maybe if I let her give me lots of treats she will heal faster." Yeah, I know EXACTLY what kind of dog that is. (I have one of those, too). :P They lay around and plot how best they can arrest your attention away from everyday activities. In this case, I say he's gone too far. You might want to watch your back (or your other leg) he just might get more ideas :evilmustache:
All kidding aside, I hope you heal quickly. "Okami" is a pretty cool game, you might want to check it out to pass the time.

NA-HA! Making up excuses to get out of the contest eh? What next... the DOG ate your painting? Pfft.
Ok I kid I kid. Breaking things ain't fun, my curse has been slowly burning the right side of my body... starting with my foot at 5, now I'm up to the thigh at 25, I guess in 20 years I'll boil off my arm :S. Get well soon :)

yo magicgoo, i'm in this with u,
i broke mine while doing some stunt on my bmx, i landed to hart on my feet and broke my leg and my enkel, first we all thought it was just a litte scratche on the bone cause it din't hurt at all, so we went to the hospital after an hour or so (all that time i was lying on my back enjoying the sun) so we came their waited for another creeping 3 hours (it started to hurt) then the doktor came, took some x-rays, and yeah their it was, my leg and my enkel, and i was like damn this is soo freaking cool " I BROKE SOMETHING AT LAST" but the fun stoped kinda quick, cause i needed to keep my leg in the air, F*** weel chairs i'm to cool for that, (at least i thought) anyways, a week went by, i went back to the hospital to get a walking cast, but a week later it started to hurt like hell, so we went back, and the dokter told me that i had a bruise (i hope thats the correct word=> the blood in my leg could sirculate) but while i was their the dokter took new pics and told me that one of my bones broke even further, so i needed to be operated, wich hurted like f*** hell, for the first time since i broke my leg, i cried like i was a kid of 5 years old that got his first apointment with the dentist, damn, now i have to be in the cast for another 4 weeks and already 4 went by... so no fun for me, i mist a lot of school, and i'm bored playing games ol the day, even drawing doesn't work for me now... I'M KEEPING ON
I HOPE WE RECOVER FAST :)

The thread is a great read! Trying not to laugh at your misery, MagicGoo, but it's impossible!
Get well soon, hope you don't get too bored, sitting there with the godawful cast (damn it looks so clean too? how do you do that?) but at least you got some godawful internet and CA :yayca:
Oh and - once my leg got PWNT by a puddle and an attempted ninjaa air kick.

Thanks, now I'm afraid to walk. Gotta work those stabalizer musclers so it doesn't happen again!
Since it seems to be story time, I broke my first major bone when I was 17 (major meaning non-fingers... I've actually broken ALL of my fingers/thumbs growing up, but I don't count that)... it was one of my first times snowboarding.. and they recommended wearing some terrible wrist protector. Advice for everyone in the future, don't wear a damn wrist protector. Normally when you fall, you get some give from landing on your hands.... but nope, this dumb wrist protector prevents any easy wrist movement... so I fall on my hand, and the thing snapped my arm like a twig right at the spot where the protector ends.

oh and my sister broke her arm once when she was on a ferris wheel. the seat she was in was rotateable and one of her friends did just that-and somehow my siter managed to hit some kinda pillar on the outside and she almost puked from the pain. but only the next day she went to hospital and it turned out the bottom hand bone was broken. :$

AngryScientist: The cast is so clean because it was only like 30 hours old when I took the photo yesterday! You can laugh all you want, btw. I can't stop laughing about it either :P
Padre, that sucks! But, at least you have a cooler story than mine, right? A BMX is better than a step :}
Carni, I almost simultaneously threw up and passed out from the pain too, but I was thinking "NO! I have to make it to the phone and I don't want barf on me too!"

When I was 11 or 12 I broke my arm getting out of bed. It was a bunk bed, but that's still a stupid as hell way to break your arm. Not only that, it was two days before summer vacation started. I spent most of that summer watching people swim. I'm just lucky it wasn't my drawing arm, or I really would've gone crazy.

Anyway, good luck :D
