View Full Version : DSG 1135: Sci-Fantasy Character: GIZMO GIRL

[ This is rather open-ended... ]

[ ... But please, no sexual gizmos. ]

[ For those who are not familiar with the word: "gizmo" means a mechanical device or part whose name is forgotten or unknown; a gadget; contraption; appliance; etc. ]

[ She might be surrounded by them, wearing them, or of them. ]

[ A lot of ways you can approach it, but steer clear of the sex notion. ]

[ Get drawing. ]

I might try a one women band, old school style.

Here is my picture, not very creative today just a girl
with a melting gun giving it to a block of ice.

It's a little bulky, but with it she can check her mails and tonight's TV program at the same time.

Giz-doll 3500, also known as Betty-Bot.

She sings, she plays, she loves to amaze.
Bring her home to show mom and dad,
but whatever you do, don't make her mad.

...in reverse order...

hamsta: nice choice of colors. the pose and cropping kill it for me though :( id like to see something a bit more dynamic. love the socks tho :D

skolld: i like the colors and cartoony feel. love the boots! id like to see that horizon line come up a bit though, and the spaceships towards the back dont seem to be in line with the ones in front.

beckerda: your anatomy isnt terrible... a bit simplistic, and the thighs need a bit of shortening and the calves need more elongation, but the pose is really uncomfortable. think about how she is supporting her weight, especially with a firing weapon, and try to draw accordingly. the shading in the background seems kind of pointless; out of curiosity, what were you intending to do with it?

adamb: i'd like to see a bit more girl and a bit less gizmo, but thats me ;) compositionally this would be stronger if the figure was either in the center of the field of vision or slightly to the left. consider cropping out about 1.5 inches on the left side.

goran: beautiful as always. the only thing that looks a bit off to me are her feet, but i struggle with feet in perspective quite a bit so i can understand. she might stand more comfortably in that breeze if her feet were shoulder length apart and flat on the ground.

iwantjelly: those are some crazy gizmos! not much to say here, im not crazy about the colors together, but thats really subjective. having said that, there's nothing blaringly wrong about the comp either... love the blurb tho--even with the technology i can only handle one function at a time :)

ashton: i think the biggest thing with your picture is that you need some practice with the human figure. think about people in terms of gentle shapes and curves rather than straight lines and polygons. also, watch how people move and sit/stand to figure out what looks most natural in terms of posing. nothing's wildly out of shape, but many things are just a bit off with her pose/figure. like others above, i think this composition would be stronger if you weighted it more heavily to the left of the frame.

This is my first DSG Post. I've lurked for a while, but never gotten around to putting anything up.

I'm a full time student at Oklahoma State majoring in Illustration. I hope that I'll have the time to get involved in this on a regular basis, but I may not due to school and work.

----

As for the sketch...a gizmo in my mind is something that you're not entirely sure of what it does. So here it is. My girlfriend suggested that it is a Showtune singing, vegetable chopping, peanut butter making scalp massager.

Oh and by the way. Ignore the DSG label at the bottom, for some reason after drawing I can't seem to write.

King.isaac - Welcome, and really great illustration. It has a lot of character for such a simple scene.
Stinger hh - Also a great one; colorful and finished looking. Welcome to the DSGs.

sure are a lot of new people joining in--it is the best place to start. Maybe I'll start posting again. My hiatus has turned into a complete abandonment.

Mitze - Looking good! Too much lip gloss though, and that belly is truly grotesque ;)

Here's my submission for today! Hope you likes it.

http://www.steprock.com/illofriday/dsg1135_pixel8.jpg

P.S. my favorite 2 are the 2 previous entries. And I must agree with King Isaac's analysis that a gizmo ought to be something you don't know quite what it is, or at least that it seems incomprehensible.

With my sketch, I think I failed to capture that idea, going more along the lines of a "gadget" or mechanical marvel. Goran's costuming is what I had in mind in the first place. I'm just glad I pulled this off as well as I did! I'm a learnin' and that's good.

sarillion, thanks for the comments :-)
I drew her not knowing what I wanted to put in her hand, I had her leaning back a little to counter the weight in the outstretched hand but the pose comes across pretty silly for firing a weapon. I tried to focus on the just the shape of the body.
The shading in the background is just to contrast the weapon fire, it wasn't really supposed to be shading, though I do see how silly it is with the rest of the picture.
The body proportions are about how I wanted them, 4 heads, but I suppose you're right about the lower legs.
Thanks again :-)

iwantjelly - Cool character. I dig the style of rendering, too.

.adamb - I like how much information is actually suggested in your character, despite being in harsh sillouhette. There's a narrative established by the large machinery, the grey day, and the masked little girl that's quite appealing. It's good that you busted your butt on the lighting... it means you're forcing yourself to discover new things, and that means you'll grow in ability and in vision.

stinger hh - He he... I thought someone might try this angle. A decent effort. Welcome.

Mitze - An ambitious effort... I'm particularly fond of the hologram and the dragon on her shirt. The background bothers me, though. Even if it was just a different colour...maybe blue... it might be a bit nicer.

Camara - Hmm... not much about her that's really describable as being a "gizmo". She's cute, but I wish her legs were finished.

dan liimatta - What can I say? That's fantastic! The story it tells... Her face and expression are full of character, the mood created by the lighting and palette is very effective, all the detail you put into it is marvelous, and the weirdness of that gear-filled tentacled orb coming out of her is fascinating. I'm so pleased that this simple topic contained the inspiration I hoped it would. Oh, and I appreciate the nipple removal. ;) An outstanding job that everybody is enjoying. Great work, dude.

ahbeejieh - Welcome. Nice use of the textured brushes... More people need to explore the power of those. I don't understand what the cloth-like stuff to the right is... but I dig the mechanical blades and stuff. I wish the arms themselves were fleshed out more thoroughly, like the cabled stuff disappearing into the darkness. The sickly bile-green is a cool colour, although I wonder if maybe a hint of some other colours might offset things a bit more. Finally, cropping the top off might help with the composition, since nothing is really going on up there, and I don't think all that dead space is adding anything to the piece. Cool effort, though.

Wow, good entries!
Good to see you've found the DSG ahbeejieh ;) If I understand correctly it is a man carrying the gizmo girl over his shoulder? I think it works well.
Dan - "no sexual gizmos." Perhaps you made the largest sexual gizmo--a mechanical uterus! It's okay, I won't tell on you. It's too awesome, even if the nippleless breast is more disturbing than her mechanical stomach ;)
Angora - Wonderful; nice touch on the shirt
Camera - Good to see someone's here to spice it up!

sarillion Creepy, in both of her incarnations. On the small one the shading is a bit too much, and doesn't look right. I don't really have much to say... maybe you should have found better ways to connect the pointy things to the cords.

Hi, everybody. Back from the weekend, celebrating my father's birthday. So...just a sketch, girl with her Gizmobot, recolored in PS, all in all it took about 20 min:

http://home.arcor.de/wildreizehn/fliflaflo/DSG/1135.jpg

critiques:

ashton - pose is a bit stiff and her face/breasts seem to be off.
iwantjelly - good use of gizmos, nice sketching.
goran - reminds me of Battleangel Alita, pretty cool.
adamb - nice scenery, like especially the gas mask.
sarillion - for the short amount of time, pretty good and nice sketch.
beckerda - the robot is highly cute and adorable, especially because of it's simplicity! the girl however has some anatomy issues and her face looks off.
Skolld - overall very nice, what irritates me are these gradients, maybe roughing them up with a dirt-texture could help.
Hamsta - Detail! Well, not too much, but I like this one. And yes, the socks are truly great.
stinger hh - Welcome! Great idea for gizmos/the use of them. I wish your linework would be a bit cleaner to match the style of coloring, but I can't deny that she'll be the pretty queen of the ball.
king.isaac - Welcome aboard your highness, that's a nice sketch:)
Mitze - Some parts of her body (the legs and shirt) are rendered very careful and got a superclean look, while her bike (?) is done pretty rough. To me this mixture doesn't fit, maybe it's just me.
pixel8 - Good work, keep on learning. The anatomy still looks a bit odd, so does her cheek, but don't you worry, everything will turn out fine:)
PelleTM - Cute idea, a bit rough maybe.
Camara - Highly sexy, I blushed when I first saw it;) Not too Gizmo, but it looks nice and fast.
dan liimatta - Awesome, of course:) Well done, great skintones, good idea. Favorite parts, the gears in her belly, the feet and her face. Only crit: lightbeams from the windows are too clearly digital brushes.
ahbeejieh - Welcome aboard, excellent first entry. Very good lighting, textures, anatomy and scenery.
angora - My favorite idea, funny and well done at the same time
moonlit - Like the new style, try this a few times more, will you? Generally, the colors look too saturated, try to keep an eye on that.
burrito - Lovely colors, nice sketch, cool pic, composition and pose are too standard in my eyes.
Crustacean - Very good. Strange machinery adds some bonus points. Good style.

iwantjelly: I like the sketch, and the gizmos are for real (that's is I have no idea what they do) and it is all good.
goran: demdike mentioned battle angel Alita, and I felt the same thing & as usual I like it.
stinger hh: I can only join in and say welcome :P
king.isaac: Welcome & I agree that a gizmo should be something weird unexplained & you managed well :)
pixel8: learning is the key true enough, so keep it up :)
Camara: sassy, sexy sketch. My problem is really the gizmo, or lack off - as you explained it :/
ahbeejieh: Love the fact you do texture, somewhat sad to see that so many avoids it. Anyway lovely DSG, stick around and welcome.
angora: simple and good ideas are damn hard, and you managed - congrats.
burrito: I like the concept, line and colour, but I fear like demdike I would want some more flare to the composition and pose.
Crustacean: I really like the machine, keeps me pondering what the hell it is, a vehicle, a can dispenser or wtf, good stuff as usual.
demdike Nice 20 minutes though, & even if feels really flat I like the design/illustration feel over it.

& Thanks for the crits

Hamsta

demdike I like this, very gritty. Traditional media showing what it knows best: texture, accidents, line quality. She's so wonderfully wierd with her high forehead, lack of nose, small eyes, and those feet.
Love the crooked tiles in the bg.
You left alot of room for her feet, but not much for her head, and while this should be bad, I like it here.

The bot is a little too dark... is that a straight edge as an arm?
