I'm just curious about this. Have you ever been working on a drawing, and have someone look over your shoulder and judge you on the subject matter? I've been caught a few times on the bus and the subway drawing people, or what they'd look like dead. Once I was drawing one of an old lady feeding birds where the birds were eating her, and a some kid just said "You're Weird!".

Well anyways what i was getting at was how many of you have ever made someone uncomfortable, or look at you funny after seeing some of your work?

Things I here a lot;

"Will you stop that already? You don't know kung fu!"

"Stop running with those! You'll put an eye out!"

"Stop pinching me!"

"Will you stop crying? We have to kill them unless you want them crawling around in your food."

"Damnit! How many times have I told you not to leave the seat up?...And how you managed to get some on the cieling, I don't want to know."

"No. I'm not going to pull your finger."

"You're cleaning that up."

"No I don't want to here you burp on command. Last time you tried that, you threw up."

"No I don't want to hear your views on the middle-east. I'm sure it would take more than a giant grilled-cheese sandwich to achieve piece."

"maybe it wouldn't bleed so much if you'd just stop picking it"

The trick is to stay inside all the time. Don't leave your room. That way people can't talk to you because there are no people. I've been very successful with this tactic lately.

I'm working gardening, mostly for old folks at retirement homes. And I get quite a bit of "Thanks hon... no wait! you're a boy!?"

Old people just see long blond hair as a girl

but when I'm drawing the most popular is certainly "Are you some kind of ARTIST?? " :D

haha, when i was in school, i often had those super-literate uberartsy girls walk up behind me and look at the side margins of my pad, that usually was crowded with scribbles of everything that crossed my mind. (later, the side margin grew almost the size of the actual page :))

usual comments:
"you're weird"
"oh man" (in that subtone that reads "won't you ever grow up and devote that little useless oldfashioned illustrating talent you have to art that actually tells something?")
"ieeeeehrg"
"nazi asshole" (me drawing military stuff, resident hippies call me nazi... wtf)

franz, your method works superb! i practise this one myself for several years now and its got lots of great side effects :)
i don't get sunburn anymore (i don't tan, i get sunburn)
no more stupid comments
i dont get wet when it rains anymore
etc...

:)

so what, then i'm weird in their eyes... can there be any more praise for me?

Seriously, though. i think people tend to believe I'm a bit eccentric. For the final portfolio piece for my intro to 2-D design class, we had to make a social/political statement on a piece of bristol board. those were the only requirements. While others were making peace symbols out a callage of pictures of peaple of different races, and others were doing various anti-war things, I had a big bloody mass of insect legs reach upward from the ruins of a smoking city, all washed out in warm red, orange and brown watercolors. My professor was like "It's...umm...good. I umm... Don't think I'd want it on my living room wall, though. She's also asked me if have a lot of nightmares after looking at my sketchbook.

I don't consider myself sick or anything like that. People tell me have a sick and morbid mind and a dry sense of humor and are generally left scratching their heads after looking at my art. They also see my dinosaurs and conclude I'm immature for being interested in that kind of thing. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing though...Doesn't mean I'm going to stop either way.

Thats what Im talking about Lono. Why be normal!

I even have a sticker that says that and is hung upside down, to prove that it would be normal hanging it right side up.

Oh.. yeah and the weird thing. We're supposedly weird according to their standards. That's craaap! :D

Don't be like everyone else. That's weird.

Being weird is not being afraid of your individuality.

Kudos to weird people! :flower: :D

I heard and still hear it a lot. That's a label that sticks. And that's why we (a few friends knowing each other for ages) call us "Weird Circle". We even had a banner once, but it got stolen (hi Fipse, remember that you didn't dare to tell me for a long while?! ;)).

So my advice is: keep inside, make a method of it. It feels good!

I was just trying to lure you out, you know, get you to share some stories or something. funny incidents where people who are less artistically inclined or whatever yo want to call it see the stuff you put out and had a funny reaction to it.

I remember for this old photography class i had, i paid my friend $150 so she would let my put a cow's eye inside of a condom and have her hold it in her... well, her lips. i don't know if there's a rule on profanity or obscenity here, so i hope i'm not getting banned for saying this. Anyways, i took a closeup photo of that, and it looked sort of like a regular, normal eye, then the next photo has the eye and some of her pubic hair, and then the next one is further out with her naval in it, so... that got me suspended. The principal and guidance couselors couldn't even look at the photo. I was laughing the whole time, really.

I love pissing people off and scaring people.

I also made a bunch of those rorsach/inkblot things, you know, fold a piece of paper and put ink on ine side, tell me what you see in this picture kind of stuff? well, i wrote a bunch of valentines on those, and handed them out to a bunch of people. They opened them up and were like "oh, how sweet... what is this?" and when i told them it was my blood, it freaked them out. another suspension.

Another one i did for an art class was we had to remake an old movie poster so i painted one of those porcelin tubs from the side, with pink suds floating ofver the side with a big bloody puddle on the floor, for PSYCHO, and for some reason that didn't get me suspended, so i was a bit disappointed...

But still. Being weird is great!!!! I guess i look weird too, with the purple and green eyebrow thing. yeah one's purple the other one's green. cool huh? hehe. weirdness does have its perks. you meet a lot of interesting people who think they can be honest with you and tell you about their problems thinking you'd like that and it annoys the hell out of me but i shut up and listen but i wish people would just stop whining and just stop talking to me or better yet stop breathing for a few hours.

I'm only called weird when put magnets up to my face and they stay there

i think weirdness is objective.....personally i find lots of stuff "weird" like for instance the word weird.....say it a bunch of time weird, weird, weird and then it really starts to sound...um..well, weird.

or how about the word bellybutton? the letter "W" ? how about the colour mauve? or even puce?

theres more i'm sure. but going into it takes too much energy. plus .......i'm not weird. i'm odd. some times i'm strange. but if i want to seem left of center, i'll be obtuse.

see? so much more fun.

time for bed i think.

oh how the talons of norms uselessly and vigorously scrape at the skin of the weird in confusion;
cursing and scratching their heads as they paw...
and we just laugh and deficate on them

I was very weird when I very young. I used to ride special transportion and called me all kind names. But I draw hell alot better than them and smarter than them too. Reason people called me weird so much that I have little disability. There was something wrong with my brain function. I used to hear dead people and look in pictures, the people talk to me. Now, I am feel much better now and got pick on chicks so easy.

There is still weirdo people out and never know it.......

heh most artists get the "your weird" thing, most of the time it's "your insane" for me though.

So I tend to ignore them and keep my collection of severed finger nails to my self.

the weird people are the ones who step out of line and make shit that really matters... and being "weird" is relative anyway. For example, I think watching tv for 25 hours a week is weird, but a good majority of the US doesn't. so fuck em, you'll always win because you're doing what you want.

Hey, I'm in a better situation than you :D

When friends of mine or other people see sketches/drawings, they go like
"Awww beautiful!" - "Oh, draw me a smurf" - "Draw a caricature" - "Draw me a portrait" :o
and so on, but my drawings are really not that good, so I say "No, they are bad, blablah".

But the most frequent question is "Why do you draw?".
The people around me always need a reason, when I say, I do it for fun, they don't understand it :)

At least I never heard that I'm weird ;)
But don't listen to them, do your own thing.
