I am brand new to Raw, and for a silly question, i can't seem to upload my raw files off of my camera, im not sure how. When i plug in my usb to my camera i usually see all of my jpeg files and upload them like so, but for raw files they wont even show up so i cant upload them....Anyone know how? haha...

Thanks!

Two questions...

1. What camera are you using?
2. What software are you using to pull the photos off?

I had the same problem with my Eos 305D (rebel xt). I solved it by switching from PTP to Data Connection in the camera menu.

First of all, can you see anything on your memory card when you double click my coputer and then your digital camera icon? I get a USB mass storage devise or new disk drive option apper in my computer when i plug my camera in. If this is the case but you cant open or vuew the files this is because your computer cant understand the file raw, its very differnt from jpg, jpg is prosesed and commpresed information from the camera, RAW is unprosessed and un compressed info, you need software installed on your PC that will take this data and make it in to somthing you can see, there are a number of bits of software out there, i use my nikon software, picasa (google) if in in a runs (its also faster that the nikon software) and I use CS2 for the prossesing. Please r ember that i think there was no support for RAW in photoshop up untill 9 or CS 1, photoshop 7 to the best of my knolage ddnt support it

The problem is, you need to install the cannon utility stuff.. along with your camera, came like 3 cds.. Install em!
Using microsoft scanner is really poor.

claude is right ... i had the same problem the first time when i pluged my camera in the computer ... i didn't knew that i have to install a utility for it .... anyway ... it's easy after you install the Canon EOS Utility ...
also you could use the ZoomBrowser to process the RAW images and save them as jpegs .... it should've come on one of those CDs

cheers :D

Hey guys, thanks alot, i got to the point where i can now get the camera raw files onto my computer and they go into Zoombrowser, thats great. Now, i have another problem. I am trying to use Adobe Bridge/Adobe Photoshop CS2 to edit them, and i keep getting the error "Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document." I believe i have downloaded and put the new update for camera raw in properly as well, cause i thought that may be the problem, but, i am still getting this problem.

I am using a Canon Digital Rebel XT, or others know it as Canon 350D.

I need help! :(

Thanks guys,

~JB

ok, for me the best solution was to install the software that came with your camera 'digital photo pro' or whatever its called, and use that to open up your shots. in there you can either leave them as they are, or add the canon effects to them (the same as setting your camera to landscape mode etc)

AFTER you've opened them in there, up the top theres an option in the menu (or just press alt+p) to open it in photoshop. if you do it from in here, it WILL open in photoshop. it sorta tricks it up into a TIF file, and PS opens that instead.

umm, try that, hopefully it made some kinda of sense

Andres: thanks dude, i seemed to figure it out now. I just downloaded another update which was the 3.5 update Dng raw converter and it seemed to work :)

Now to figure out how to master this RAW stuff! :P

Thanks everyone, maybe if you have any really good links to tutorials on Camera Raw i would appreciate it.

So, just to clarify for my own understanding, the differences between RAW and JPG are:

- RAW is uncompressed, and so wont have compression artifacts (until you compress it)
- RAW will not treat the photo for white balance, whereas JPG will (at least on my camera it does)
- RAW is sexy, and does things that JPG can only dream about.

Please tell me if I'm wrong, or have missed out anything.
