Touch me!

Whenever i see colored stuff that looks spot on it makes me smile, its like a landmark that im aiming for at the moment. To be able to get colors that look.. right, oh when will my time come.

Keep dumping, really.. do, hell... anything'll do, those pencils and digitals are looking great.

I like the variety of styles you have going on. The editorial type stuff really does it for me personally. There seems to be more energy and freshness to it and you have a great way of communicating your ideas in that format. My favorite is the girl with the crow on her finger. I know it doesn't reflect your ability to render the human form (which you do quite well in the faces), but the graphic appeal mixed with the photograph thumbnails below is a nice touch. Bulletproof has to be one of my all-time favorite songs (out of several hundred, but hey) by any band. I love what you've done by using the lyrics in the circular headed girl piece.

Marvellous little sketchbook you have going here. I really appreciate you taking a peek in mine so I thought I'd return the favor :)

Hehe it certainly seems you know what you're doing - your lighting is spot on, I love it. Also you have a very cool, distinctive rendering style though you show a lot of variation.

Good stuff mate, I'd love to see more! Keep it up!

Wow, i'm a fan! Thanks for dropping by my book. I'd have to say my favorites are the firey screaming guy at the top and the volcanic woman in the last post. I also really like the thumbnail sillohuettes. Nice handling of light. It's clear from the stuff you've posted that you're way awesome with traditional skills, and applying that to your digis. Only crit-esque thing i can say is that you seem to primarily focus on demented/creepy/outright strange things, which are awesome, but maybe you should step out of your comfort zone and do a peaceful cottage enviro or something in the sunshine.

Not to say i don't like shadowy stuff, so keep bringing that in daily too! Looking forward to more!

Tenelaus: That one was a crazy day in class. I just sat down with a pen and a white color pencil and zoned out majorly for a few hours. Is it scarry that all my best stuff was done while sleep deprived? LOL

MrBob: Thanks!

Mike: Bulletproof rocks! LOL. Im happy to hear you like the more graphic stuff. When most people who know me see it they go "huh??" LOL.

Spats: Thanks yo!

Kuroart: Thanks!

Fishspawn: Totaly! I'm always trying to get myself to do a few happy bright (possibly even cute) things now and then. But the projects im doing at work are very dark and demented. I should realy make some more effort to break away from it when i get home. :rendered:

I got a Cintiq at work this week and Painter essentials. Ive never used Painter before, It deffinitely has a more 'natural' feeling to it, which i think im going to like for rough work. But it deffinitely isnt going to replace Photoshop for me. Very nice tools there though.

so the first 2 are just me playing with the brushes and mediums in painter. Im not very good with them yet.

I also have an old guitar that ive stripped down, sanded, and now im going to paint some artwork on it. These are some photoshop Mock-ups of ideas i have. The first one is my favorate, I dont know what im doing on the newsprint one yet. Some sort of graphic....

Thanks Fish! several people have told me to bump the contrast. I sketched this with color, and i tend to loose a lot of contrast when i work that way. I have a tough time thinking about value and color at the same time. :dead:

New stuff. Been on a kick of having too many projects and not enough time. wish i could post stuff from work. It feels like thats the only place i ever finish anything anymore. :P

can you explain how you did those environments ? the style is breath taking

codenothing
July 23rd, 2007, 08:06 PM
Thanks phil! :rendered:

Sure Davi, (and thanks!).

My process for environments shifts slightly depending on the environment and situation, but for interior spaces I generaly start with a very rough block out of geometry in 3D, and then i do an 'unlit' pass at the objects in the room. blocking in there basic colors and values. Then make a 100% lit copy of the layer. then use a layer mask to paint in the light. once ive got the rough lighting down, i will make new layers on top of that and paint in more detail and add texture to the surfaces. usualy I use at least some sort of photo element in the image. But its always adjusted and painted over to fit in with everything else. Using photo elements can be a slippery slope, on one hand I know I can paint this stuff if I had the time, on the other it is comonly used in digital matte painting, and It saves me a alot of time and brings the work to a higher calibur faster. I guess my rule of thumb is dont paint to match a photo, make the photo match your paint.

1: Heres a shot of basicaly what I start with. I left the photo elements in. I Think I threw in this photo stuff as a last minute thing. I knew i had a good shot of the fire hose on the left and didnt want to take the time to paint it. But thats about as much geometry as I built. Basic geometry wires for perspective. (the photo stuff went in later)

2: I block out the basic color and values in a medium to Low key Pallete. Its just a basic block out, I dont imply lighting at all realy, I try to keep it all graphic. I would have painted in more than this, like the doors and the AC ducts, noteboard, etc... But probably would have left out details like the bench and other small props.

3: Basic lighting pass. At this point I paint in the physical lights in the scene white where i want them on a new layer. Then I take my low key block-out layer, and make a High key duplicate of it. I put this layer on top of the low key layer, and give it a layer mask. I fill the whole mask in black, then use white on the mask to paint the light into the scene where it is supposed to be.

at this point everything is pretty quick, rough, and basic. I can take this lighting pass to my client and ask if they like the color pallete, values, lighting, mood, etc.... If they want a completely different lighting scinario, it is just a matter of painting a black and white mask. not re-working a color layer. When I bring objects into the scene (like the AC duct) I can paint its shadow by painting the black shape in the alpha.

also, If I wanted a 'colored' light in the scene, I can duplicate the high key layer, change its color values, then use the same alpha tecnique to cast color perfectly in the environment without me needing to think about it how a red light might effect a yellow wall and a green carpet.

4: Once the lighting pass is approved, I make new laters above it and paint the finer detail, smaller objects. I also add grunge textures and such with a 'soft light' layer usualy.

Long time no see. Good to see your post. I love the crazy silent hill stuff. The portraits are wicked too. What did you paint with oil's, acrylics? Haven't really done anything of note since you last popped by. Feel like I'm in a rut but I will keep pluging away with life drawing too.

codenothing
September 13th, 2007, 01:18 PM
yea they are both acrylic (the silent hill stuff is digital)

I havent had anywhere to use oils lately, my room is too confined, and I sleep in it, so having the fumes of terpinoid lingering would be a bad thing. But we recently moved to a much larger building for work so Ive moved all my oil gear there. So hopefully I'll be able to find some time to paint in the evenings now.

I try to be supportive and as possative as I can towards the community here, and when I come across someone doing the oposite I think you need to confront it.

Kinnas: Thanks!

Razz: Yes I do hate acrylics! Not only the fast dry time, but they have an opaque quality about them that I just hate. Pluss its plastic.... which just makes me feel cheap when i use em. But I dont have much of a choice at home. Glad to meet a fellow oil fan. ;)

Thanks for popping by my SB. Wicked idea about the skeletal and muscular drawings I will have to give it a go. As for the line thickness, I'm hoping that will start developing when I get my lines in the right place. Still concentrating on that to the exclusion of all else, usually. Can't seem to loosen up always thinking what to do next. Still got so much to learn and nothing is second nature yet. It can be difficult to remember everything everybody tells me.
I can't seem to access that link you left. I would like to have seen what you meant. Cheers Phil

im digging your environments alot. ill have to try using actual photos as a basis sometime. i usually just sketch out rough and select areas and build off of them. and then merge them for the entire scene. i really like the sense of imagery that using the real photos gets you though.

good work. really diggin' your SB

Neat stuff Codenothing! Can't say I'm a big fan of matte painting, I just like starting with a blank canvas, but it's always fun to see someone do it. Though I like those non matte environments more. Would be really great to see you finish some of those.
Awesome to see you update often.

Kicek: I AM having fun! :tihi: It's nice to just do whatever is on your mind sometimes. Been under too much controll lately.

Razz: Thanks! yea I can appreciate the preference for a blank canvas. Matte painting is just one of those "it pays well" kind of things, which is mainly why im trying to get into it. But I do enjoy it a lot too. This last one im working on has been requested to be painting only and no photo elements or textures applied. (except the original footage of course)

But heres my latest update on that. Only had time to work on the first statue. Just been using the brush tool. no copy paste.

Diphallia, I did a little research on it and it looks like shipping to sweeded would be at LEAST 50-100 american dollars. You can bid if you like but I think the shipping is going to be quite a bit. But thanks for your support. :)

I started painting my nephews nursery just before he was born, and finished it a few weeks after. (dont worry, he wasnt sleeping in it at the time. paint fumes + baby = bad.) He was sleeping with my sister for probably the first six months. But aaaaaanyway. I never got around to posting any images of it. They wanted a Neverland theme. We originaly thought of doing just one wall, but I ended up doing the entire room.

Hey, soo cool works, im looking in here since months and am always impressed again. Nice to see that you develop in such many directions.

It would be interesting to know what colors you used for the mural and how much you needed. I would be very happy to have had a room like this when i was younger (and even now i like it).

Darksteel
November 6th, 2007, 07:13 AM

codenothing

N1ck: I bought a bucket of red, yellow, and blue, a pint of black, and I think a bucket of white, and That pretty much covered it. I mixed my own colors in smaller cans. I used interior house paint, which I highly do not recomend. It dries extreamly fast and is a pain to work with. If i could go back i'd have done it with cheep acrylics, and probably just one wall. LOL

heres a piece I had set asside for a long time. finaly got around to finishing it. Not enbtirely sure what I'm calling it yet. but for right now "welcome to a hungry world" is what i've tagged it with. Probably for lack of a chance to realy think about it.

But Its one piece for a larger collection I'm trying to get done.

*EDIT oh its acrylic on wood. Just under 6" tall. with the sculpty frame.

Uuh, nice updates since I last been here. Love the last one. I prefer the first version, with the desaturated skin and warm orange fishies. Would be even more than amazing if you'd paint that life sife! The full figure looks nicer of course. The body could be a little more clear even though it is underwater. Lookie HERE (http://img258.imageshack.us/img258/4241/1183811160458352largezo8.jpg) for example. Sorry, I don't remember the artist of this one. Took it from a folder in which I'm saving inspirational works.

dude I fucking love your oil paintings :D

on this most recent post I'm having some trouble with the construction of the head and the neck. The face to me seems to read a little flat, especially around the bridge of the nose and where the eyes lay. Also, while I realize the neck is that small to show that the body isn't really floating and is sinking towards the bottom of this water, and just from the distortion of the water surface itself, its size is still bugging me. It looks like it wouldn't be able to support her head. I'm digging all those fish though, looking very good :]

oh also I'm in love with the frame you chose for that hungry world piece haha - ties it together so nicely.

keep up the good work man I hope that crit is useful :]

Heres my latest project. I have had this blank skateboard for months, and never got around to doing anything on it. I fianly picked a pin-up girl from a book I have and decided to have some fun with it. I cant sell this one, because its another artists work, but I do plan on geting some of my own girls to pose for me and start doing pin-up skateboards.

Not realy the type of thing you would want to use. more like something to hang on the wall. which is what im going to do with it when it dries. Its oil by the way.

Oh very nice work , got a good look at it all . But i saw a canvas painting to, do you paint on a angle desk ... its kinda weird , of course, but is more conformable if you use a easel , even for the back ... and you can see what you are doing bather . Leave the desk for smaller and cleaner things like concepts , comics , designs you know ... anyways keep painting and sketching and feeling art. :)

I really enjoy your digital portraits and the character sketches, you also have a very interesting technique for doing your environment paintings. My only critique might be that the forms of the figures in the recent character designs seem to be lost underneath the baggy clothing, they sometimes look a little bit short-legged, althought it could just be an illusion. I'm enjoying the work and the critique you gave me was excellent, thank you!
