I've been lurking for a long time and decided to play along with the DSG people. I havn't trusted myself to post anything there yet, but my own sketch book seems like a safe place. The quality of the work on this forum is intimidating and impressive.

Sadly I am far away from home and only have a laptop and digital camera to work with. No tablet, no scanner. If I did something wrong in creating this post please let me know.

I want to learn!

Good start to your s.b.! I would suggest first off to draw a lot! Lots of practice and try using reference material to learn from. For work on anatomy start with something from Loomis. Also somehting i do is to pick one thing at a time that i am having trouble with and just do some repitition and practices it until you've got it down. You can also check out this site for tutorials and help. Have fun and keep practicing.

Good on you. I've just started here too and I also started my sketchbook thread by saying how intimidating this place can be, but there's just so much talent here you're bound to pick up a few things along the way. I'm not very good so I can't give you any technique tips but I will say a book on anatomy is essential (I wasn't able to find one by Loomis, so I had to buy a different one) and I've also bought a book which is just full of portrait photographs that I've been using as references. Go out and just look at people too (not too much though, you'll get strange looks, trust me) it will help to understand the basic shapes people are made up of.

The only other things I can think of are: Practice whenever you can, keep all of your work good or bad so you can learn from it and don't ever get discouraged.

Good luck.

I grabbed the Loomis books in pdf, some new wacky erasers, and some better paper.
I started reading the Figure Drawing for all it's Worth book, looks good and I'm looking forward to going through it.

This is my first page from Loomis, and little highlights of the DSGs I did. (1133 and 1134)
