Still in concept stages, but heres a rough draft of what I envisioned. They have evolved to be tall because the food eventually went "up". The hands are 3 fingered, because thats all you need to pick fruits :). I'll work on it some more when I get a chance :painting:.

Edit: Removed Pic. Decided to take Waffle_King's excellent advice :). I'm gonna read up on some anatomy and basics in general. I have the loomis books in .pdf, so I'll maybe be back to the dsg in a few weeks. Are there any other books you guys would recommend for the budding artist?

ahha this is going to be really funny, watching all the strange creatures come up. this is something I just made:

http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n26/ramonsk8/humanixpose.jpg

I messed up the photoshop-work again, but it was fun to do... in the future, the half world will be flooded by water, and half of the world's population will develop a strange new way of walking. they'll use their arms to walk and their feet to use things, and they'll change the way they look, really strange. these people will be called humanix, and the humans will live in harmony with them...

One more. 40 min. PS.
I've mostly worked in pencil or brush & ink in the past. I just got a Wacom Cintiq 21ux (Its amazing!) and I'm trying to learn more about painting in PS. Color has never been my strong suit. Any advice and/or crit is welcome. Thanks.

Buritto: again another masterpiece from you. you've got a cool way of using photoshop, great style.

Professor Ashton,

My time with the K'ree has been fascinating thus far, and last standard month I was able to witness one of their most treasured rituals, the bi-annual "Greeting" and "Departing" of the sun. Twice a year in celebration of the vernal and autumnal equinox, a shaman of the K'ree tribe climbs up the rugged hill that dominates the center of the crater basin that is their home. At the rocky summit he turns his back to the setting moon and faces the east, where the sun will soon rise. Wearing only a loin-cloth, he carries with him the K'ree's most sacred relic- what they refer to as the "son of sun," a constantly glowing orb that has shed it's light silently, according to the K'ree, for generations.

The Shaman sets the relic on the ground in front of him and lowers his huge hands to the ground to hunch over it slightly. He then begins to chant and sing, his deep, loud voice booming throughout the silent valley. He intones the sun; in the spring he greets it as it "returns" to the basin(finally reaching a point where it's light will fill all the crater basin throughout the day), and in the autumn he wishes it well as it "departs."

Enclosed please find a quick sketch I did of this scene in Photo-Shop CS, in about two hours.

I trust everything on Earth is going well. With my kindest regards,

-Andrew

OK, I'm going to try to hit everyone today...*takes deep breath and jumps in*

Saaruto: Ok idea, but keep going! Try to move him around, put him in poses-- even if your proportions are off and the anatomy is question, you can still benefit from trying to make him occupy space. Do you have any anatomy books? They can help you "fill out" your figures because you'll know whats under that skin! I hope you keep posting- and keep drawing! One sketch at a time! :yayca:

Demiurgic: I like the "blade-runner" feel of the city and neon, that part reads good. My thing is, it doesn't seem like that fella in the foreground (I assume the guy your blurb is talking about) is really stretchout or testing his body's ability to morph in any way other than standing at an impossible angle and defying gravity. Also, he's not really an "otherworldly human" with stilt appendages. Oh well. Some wonky perspective, but a good idea none the less. Keep at it!

Knight Vision: You got a cintiq? :jawdrop: All the more reason to draw non-stop. Good ideas, I like your second sketch more. Some anatomy issues, and even though I struggle with the same things, try to think compositionally. I've found that even keeping that word in your mind (composition) helps you make your images "work" better- it just keeps you somewhat aware of it, I suppose. Here's a link to a great tutorial on CA (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=71673) about composition and keeping it in mind.

ramonsk8: I applaud your choice to try and tackle a difficult pose- fore-shortening is a killer, and I think you pulled it decently well- I can tell what the figure's trying to do. I like the texture you've got on there. Check out that link I left in Knight Vision's comments. One drawing at a time, mate-- In just the few drawings in DSG I've seen of you, I'm starting to see improvement, and that's exciting. Keep trying those hard poses, keep trying to figure out masses and... well, Just keep drawing! :yayca:

burrito: ha, this made me laugh out loud. I love the look on his face- like someone just walked in and caught him at something. Keep at it! I'd love to see your take on the next prompt, whatever it is.

Camara: nice! My only real crit are his deltoids, traps, and shoulder girdle in general- it doesn't look like it could support those long arms and neck. Also, be careful to not fall into the "rows and rows of abs" trap- there is a very distinct group of muscles abutting another- I think that shape you're going for under the pecs (sometimes called the "greek arch") is the delineation of the rib-cage under the muscle, not the muscle itself-- though on "cut" poeple you get those obliques coming in and helping form that "triangle chest." ...then again, he's from mars, so low-grav probably means low-muscle. lol. Nice drawing- lets see some more!

beckerda: Nice idea, I like that you put him in an enviro and added some BG work. Just keep studying the form, and how muscles and joints work together. His legs look like giant sausage fingers or something, and unless he moves like an ameoba, that's just not going to work. Look at your elbow in the mirror- hold your arm out and flex it. See hom the muscles rise up and then duck back down at the joint? Muscles weave over and under each other and attach to bones- this is what they pull to make us move. Just keep observing- look at people and how they move... hopefully you won't creep anybody out, lol.

moonlit: I like the fact that you put it in an environment- and the color, though really saturated, gives it a nice alien feel. Good eye for the reflected light. My big crit is just that this does not look like a human with stilt legs and arms. I dunno what it is. Some sort of giant virus crawling around... or maybe a sweet turquoise crab critter. Either way, looking forward to your next post. keep observing and drawing!

goran: beautiful work as always. I really like the BG texture and the "I just scanned this out of my beautiful Da Vinci-esque sketchbook where i write backwards and solve the mysteries of the universe" feel it gives it, if you know what I mean, lol. My only crit is I don't think it completely fits the prompt, but beautiful work none the less.

Sorry about the long post- I just wanted to give back a little bit. You know, help out. Or something. lol.

A quick one at work today,
My thought was that the world he evolved on was covered mostly by water and so there are only these thin sandbars and small islands to walk around and find food on. I figured that maybe they evolved from water fowl of some kind.

Thanks Waffle_King for the critz. I agree with you, and I was focusing to much on the enviroment and not enough on him, although his angle doesn't seem off to me, he's meant to be leaning against that advertisement. Well I think I'm going to scrap that idea and try a fresh approach.

good evening everybody, couldn't come up with a clever story, this is part of an initation-ritual, one week on the pole (planted yesterday;)), blindfolded and completely on his own, neither food nor water, this young priest will meditate and pray. 1 1/2 hour, PS.

crits:

saaruto - go for it, I'll crit when it's finished
Demiurgic - nice atmosphere, especially the wet floor. the guy could look "stiltier"
KnightVision - for the first:his pose is a bit confusing. like the second way better, for colors, maybe a BG-color more different from the foreground would make the guy pop out more
ramonsk8 - nice forshortening, the legs hurt to watch, but I suppose that's the way the humanix are built.
burrito - just plain nice, looks great
camara - nice quickie, the muscles on the torso look strange though
beckerda - good concept, as Waffle King pointed out, keep studying some anatomy-books
moonlit - wild take on the concept;) to me, the highly saturated colors give a good "otherworld" feeling
goran - excellent. I like the head best, but the rest of this creature is pretty frightening too.
Hamsta - well done, I like this poolboy:) but where is the bassin?
Lizzybeth - creepy and nice, looking good. One thing, her right arm seems off to me, like a child would hide behind her, sticking it's arm out.
Waffle King - great concept and great work! looks very good and the lighting is awesome.
Skolld - nice sketch, looks pretty good! crit:the coloring is a bit blurry
paradoxba - great style, I like this rough and strong impression it makes.

OK. One more on this one. The friendly alien archer waves goodbye as he leaves for the hunt. Imagine the distance those arrows could travel with such a long draw!

Lizzybeth: How frustrating it must be for someone with such a long stride to only make tiny steps in that dress. Alien fashion can be so uncomfortable. Cool design.

Waffle King: Thanks for the feedback and the link. I really want to improve. I'll try to create more intreresting compositions. Yours is awesome! I love the way the light hits the arched fingers of his right hand.

Demdike: Also, thanks for the crit. Nice work on yours. I always look forward to seeing what your going to come up with.

There's been some nice entries, and nicer critiques, so I'm gonna be lazy and just post my work now ;)
Since Waffle King put so much effort into his post, I will single him out and congradulate him for his excellent backstory, illustrative image, and detailed crits... kudos.
Here's mine:
The indiginous of this particular gaseous planet are really a wonderful exhibit of adaptation to their environment. The gravity is much lower, creating elogant and slender forms of the body (and due to the elongation of the body, certain muscle groups are emphasized, such as the large trapezious and deltoids to aid in controlling such long arms). In addition, particular gases contained in the troposphere can asphyxiate aerobic organisms lower to the ground, singling out taller organisms able to breathe above the sifting and fog-like gases.

On the planet Hoshi-45A we discovered sentient life, a people resembling us. The planet is completely overgrown by one tree, or rather a family tree that spawns child's onto it self. The tree covers the whole surface and poisons the ground below, and have effectively killed off most life on the planets.
These "humans" survived like us, by adapting to the new life the plant also gave. No wonder they worship it like the Hindus do Shiva, death and life in one. Their scrolls of history, pictographed as they seem to lack an alphabet, show how the plant started to take over the planet, and how they, then short and stocky like us, walked in under and started this new life. With time they adopted to the lake of poison and to the fruits upon high, by walking upon the lake, and reaching high to take down the one thing of this horrid tree that is good, the fruit.
In the pictographs their stockier origins can be shown living side by side with this taller species, but despite searching for a full week we have found no trace left of this species; a shame as they seem in form so like us.

ramonsk8 - glad to hear that:)

Are there any other books you guys would recommend for the budding artist?

I found this (http://www.itchstudios.com/psg/art_tut.htm) to be incredibly useful, it covers nearly everything in a swift and clear manner.

Knight Vision - getting better and better, nice pose on this one. Minor ctir: the horizon looks cutout/too sharp
Johnnyhorse - Good concept and I like the white skin. To me, the hip turns too much towards the viewer/the left upper leg could be pushed back a little
Sheldon - great sketch, very nice BW-work:)
dan liimatta - I don't know if I can take so much pwnage any longer, looks great! I love the thumbnails even more, especially the upper left one's. Minor crit: I would have chosen a composition that puts the group more towards the center of the image, but that's just me.
ConCrete - pretty rough but it looks very menacing

Oh come on Dan, this is the Daily Sketch Group, geez. It's frikn awesome.
I really like the figures, and the pictograph illustrated above/below is a wonderful touch. I was going to go with a similar idea initially with the poisonous ground--glad you got to portray it nicely. I do think you could put a little more shape into the fruit though. The pictograph renders them much more vividly than the main illustration.

ConCrete - It's nice to see someone else doing a loose sketchy style as well. The thing about sketching is that you want to keep it lose but give a lot of shape and value to the image--this can be achieved through line thickness and economy. What is limiting your painting now is that you are using the same brush (an okay brush, but you need to vary the direction of it and thickness), and using very short strokes that don't necessarily mimic the form of the figure. Use the lines as a skeleton and then build upon those shapes fluidly.

dan liimatta: Thanks for sharing your sketch. I've just been reading about mass extinctions in the past and thinking about how plant life and animal life are connected. This led to the idea of animal life worshipping plant life and what conditions would apply for this to take place.

I then come to the DSG and see this concept immediately incorporated into a topic- and not by me! Pretty cool.

dan liimatta
October 8th, 2006, 05:14 PM
Crustacean & goran Again good renders with your own personality, and design.

demdike One can argue about the composition forever, I kind of like my choice of putting a large void at the center and giving the enviroment air to breath. I usually don't and that might be why I like it now of course. As for your martial artist I find it too smooth; that is I would like to see more intersecting lines and corners, and in this the breast muscles stands out as a negative ()() . Further on that subject he feels so light due to lack of pressure through the body, might be chosen of course, but I do ponder over it. Anyway not to shoot you down totally I like the light & and head.

Johnnyhorse heh, I still consider it a sketch though; as you already mentiones the fruits are more then a sparkle of a scatterbrush and random lines. Perhaps too much so & I'll fix it.

Waffle_king: Stories ftw.

& While my good streak lasts, and the flowers bloom I would like to say thanks to everyone posting in the DSGs. Why? for keeping the pressure up, for if not I would probably put less energy in; and in the end leave (not that I or the DSG will live forever but you get the point). I like to think that I also apply what I can do within reasonable limits, and that I've managed with someothers in here apply anough pressure to get an exiting batch of images almost daily.

As for me my portfolio (http://2point.se) has been greatly improved since joining, that is I've improved since my first DSG & while this is partly due to myself of course, but also because of you, so thanks.

for an ever brighter tomorrow in the world of illusions & keep them coming! :madchef:

It's good to see all of your different pieces, and even better to see these DSGs benefitting us all.
Also, after seeing a lot of time spent into your work I was going to suggest you try out the weekly activities... but then I realized that the whole charm of DSG is not that it's a daily sketch, but daily practice and vehicles for improvement in a friendly environment...

Lizzybeth and crustacean - both of yours are ace in their different but equally surreal ways. :)

Can't see gorans or burritos for some reason...

Anyway, heres my effort - about 2hrs or so in Photoshop

hehe, just realised that I'm a few days late on this one - I've not been around for a while and just did the one at the top... duh!

Well. I'm late for this one as well, but did it anyway.

Mine looks a bit evil, but really, he's just sad over not having a mouth.
Nice work everyone.

Inkfish: Really like the character. I'd personally make the legs lean the other way, so it's like he's pushing himself forward, instead of turning like he is now.

Dan liimatta: inspiring work!

Finally, here's my contribution:

Waffle King - Accurate interpretation of the topic.

Dan liimatta - Good lord, once again you bring the high calibur art. Can you explain the situation?

Goran - Can't see it, unfortunately.

Crustacean - The talent is there, nice sketch. Reminds me of a Mary Poppins/animated mice scene.

Sorry for my absence, the participation in the DSG section continues to thrive.

Keep doing you

Without the spaces inside the brackets though. Try it out, your piece is worth showing, and welcome to the DSGs!

The Creeker, named after John Creeker, was discovered on new low-tech world in quadran-54. Their life cycle is pretty unusual. They lay seeds instead of eggs. As the seeds grow in trees, they start producing fruits whitch the Creeker itself use as main base for his alimentation. After a while, fruit that were not eaten fall from the tree and hach to create a newborn Creeker...
